Client Success Melinda Lynch

Melinda Lynch came to the Shelter Home with her 2 small children, Micheala and Cody

March 16,2012. Since then Melinda has moved into her own apartment and has a steady job.

Melinda said while being a resident at the shelter she learned that it is “okay “ to ask for

help. She’s learned it’s okay to start over and to have all the feelings that come with a new

beginning.

Melinda said her best experience at the shelter was after her first couple of nights, waking in

the morning and thinking “ Wow, I really did it. I left the situation behind.” She finally feels

at peace and her children have become more relaxed. They finally get to see what a happy

mommy looks like! Melinda’s children have adjusted well. They are happier and at ease.

Melinda says she would like to tell other women in abusive relationships that, “ If you are in

an unhealthy relationship, know that you deserve better and you can get all the support you

need by calling the Shelter Home .

Melinda also says’ The shelter has helped me gain more confidence in myself, by encour-

aging me to pursue my goals, by obtaining my GED and obtaining employment. The staff at

the Shelter have been a great at helping me realize that I can make it on my own. I feel I

have drawn a little something from each staff member in terms of becoming a stronger

rationalize and reason why the incident

occurred. Abuse is not about reason. It is

about power and control over another

human being and this works.

There are many factors that are present

that would keep a woman from leaving.

Some women are financially depend-

ent on their abusers, Men often use the

children by making us feel guilty.

They Threaten to take the children., They

use the children to relay messages to

their mother. Women fear they will lose

their children, afraid that family , friends

and church will condemn them. There is

also the fear that family, friends or them-

selves will be hurt or killed.

Statistics say victims typically leave and

Slapping, hair pulling, kicking, biting,

name calling and being controlled, are all

examples of the abuse that women experi-

ence when in an abusive relationship.

There are bruises, broken bones, black

eyes, internal injuries and unfortunately

death. But there are always broken hearts.

All of the above injuries heal, but it is

the emotional and the mental injuries that

take longer to heal and sometimes they

never do. Many women have the idea that

life is supposed to be the fairytale and fan-

tasy life.

When the person that is supposed to love

us and take care of us , beats us what

makes us stay for the second and third

beating? We then try to help our partner

DV CORNER-Why do they stay? Why do they leave and go back? go back to their abusers 14 times before they

leave for good. Every 9 seconds some

woman is beaten, coerced into sex or other-

wise being abused during her lifetime. Most

often the abuser is a family member. Domes-

tic violence is the leading cause of injury to

women, more than accidents, muggings or

rapes combined.

Maybe instead of posing the question,“ Why

does she stay?” Or “Why does she go back? ”

Maybe we should ask “Why does the abuser

abuse?” With all the obstacles in her path the

real question is “How can she possibly

leave?”

Each morning as I take our clients to work, daycare etc, I drive through down-

town Lenoir. I can’t help but notice how beautiful it is, all the flowers and

trees against the morning sky is truly a heavenly sight to see. But that isn’t the

true beauty of Lenoir, the true beauty lies beneath the surface. The beauty is

the compassion its citizens show to others. The graceful way they step up to

help one another. I see it every day on the streets and at the Shelter Home.

People here are willing to take the chance of helping the homeless person and

do not just walk by like you see in so many large cities.

I hear it in the voices of the concerned neighbor who calls and says “There’s a

girl down the street, I’m worried about her, and can you help her?” Each day

men and women of the community stop by the Shelter with bags and boxes of

items they wish to donate. It simply amazes me. So I wanted to take just one

moment to say “Thank you Lenoir! Thank you to the people of Lenoir. You

make Lenoir the wonderful place that it is. “ By HLB The sun coming up over Lenoir in the morning is

truly a heavenly sight.

The Shelter Home of Caldwell County, Inc. is a designated 501(c)3 private non-profit since 1978

How can I help the Shelter Home?

Our biggest need is always financial. Most of our funding comes in the form of grants from various charitable organizations, but the

income we receive from those sources has been declining steadily for years, and with the current state of the economy that doesn't

seem to be changing. The Shelter Home is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, so any donation you make is tax deductible. We'll be happy to ac-

cept your donation in person, or you can visit our Support Your Shelter Home page to make a donation via credit or debit card.

Does the Shelter Home need volunteers?

The help we get from volunteers is critical to our success, and we always need help with something. Simply volunteering to answer

the phone can be a huge help, because it frees up our staff to work on other things. Childcare assistance is a constant need, and help-

ing us sort through donated items helps more than you'd think. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator for more information.

What kind of donated items does the Shelter Home need?

We are happy to accept virtually any donated item. Many of our residents arrive with nothing but the clothes they are wearing, and so

there's always an immediate need for clothing and toiletry items, but helping our residents begin a new life is also part of our mission,

so things like appliances, dishes, and even furniture are also important.

Please keep in mind that we appreciate every donation we receive, but many things are donated that we simply can't use. In that

case, we store the items we can utilize and share the rest to other local, deserving, charitable causes.

Please contact our Community Outreach Coordinator for more information.

I wanted to share with you some of the best parts of my job. In the past 2 weeks I got to do some pretty wonderful things for our clients. Last week I helped move a mother and daughter into a apartment. We supplied her a washer

and dryer, a complete bed room set, a night stand, a comforter set. Friday I am taking her 2 twin beds, and 4 sets of sheets. Monday morning I along with 3 volunteers picked up a desk, 2 credenza's and 2 twin mattress sets to store at

the ware house for the next family that moves. This morning I loaded a full size bed set and a twin set with sheets and

comforters and a TV, pots and pans for a mother and child that are moving into their own place. Now that being said; I could not have delivered any of those items without community support. All those items were donated. On behalf of the

families I helped this week. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. HLB
