MGA TECHNICAL TRIP TO PETRONAS PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRY COMPLEX KERTIH,

TERENGGANU 2 – 4 AUGUST 2010

DAY 0 (2 Aug 2010)

We departed from Subang Airport at 3.00 pm and arrived at Kuala Terengganu airport at 4.00 pm.

Next, we proceeded to FAMA premise in Kuala Terengganu for a welcoming talk followed by durian party and enjoyed other Terengganu delicacies such as nasi dagang, laksa Terengganu, keropok lekor and many more.

The best part was I had the chance to taste Misai Kucing beverage for the first time and I found that it’s really refreshing.

Next we moved on to check in at Tanjung Jara Beach Resort, Dungun. The journey took 1.5 hours.

My room was tremendously beautiful, the bathroom was superb and the sea view was very tantalizing even though it was a room for one person.

Later in the evening, we proceeded to Turtle Sanctuary and we managed to see a 50-year-old turtle who had just laid eggs.

The turtle man informed us that after laying eggs, the turtle will sand-bathing before she get back to the sea.

Then, we managed to release turtle’s babies which are ½ hour old to the sea. They were so tiny that we have to stand still at our spot so that we will not step on them. If anyone steps on the turtle baby, he or she will be fined for RM 500.

Next, we proceeded to a restaurant in front of Politeknik Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, Dungun to have our supper and chit chat with the delegates.

DAY 1(3 Aug 2010) Our first destination was to the Onshore Gas

Terminal (OGT). The Head of Production Operation, Mr Azmee Osman briefed us on the overall Peninsular Malaysia Operations.

Other key person that I have met was Tuan Haji Adam Ahmad holding the position of Terminal Superintendent.

OGT is the 1

st onshore gas terminal in

Malaysia. PMO manages 11 PSC’s of which 8 PSC’s

are already in the producing phase. The key important info that I learned was

PMO is currently operating 17 producing fields, 36 platforms, 2 FPSO’s, 2 FSO’s , 1crude oil terminal, 2 onshore gas terminal (OSC and OGT) and 1 supply base (KSB).

OGT outputs are gas and condensate with

design capacity of 500 mmscf and 700 mmscf for JDS and RDS respectively.

Then, we visited the whole plant area by bus. Next, we moved to PETRONAS Gas Berhad

(PGB). The key persons I have met were Mr Abdul

Fatah Abu Mansor, Senior Manager GPPA and Mr Rashid Muhamad, Senior General Manager Plant Operation Division.

PGB operation is divided into 6 plants; Gas

Processing Plant (GPP) – I, II, II, IV, V and VI.

PETRONAS Gas Berhad has four GPPs in

Kerteh and two in Paka.

On its Kimanis gas power plant project in Sabah, the company had undertaken some front-end engineering work and that the plant would be operational by late 2013.

The Kimanis 300-megawatt plant in Papar is

a collaboration with Yayasan Sabah to meet rising demand for electricity in the state.

Then, we have our lunch sponsored by PGB.

DAY 1(3 Aug 2010) – cont’d

Next, we went to the PETRONAS Observation Tower or also known as the President Tower.

We had to climb approximately 170 steps in order to get to the top of the tower. It’s lucky that I am not afraid of heights and managed to get to the top within 5 minutes.

On the top of the tower, we managed to clearly

see the whole Kerteh Petrochemical Complex and its surrounding area including the Kerteh port. The view was spectacular indeed and the weather was hot yet breezy. Here we can see how a fishing village like Kerteh / Kemaman turns into a world-class integrated petrochemical complex and becomes among the most important spot for oil and gas industry in Malaysia.

Our next destination was Optimal. We were

welcomed by the Senior General Manager of OPTIMAL, Mr Herman Schrijver who gave the operation overview speech.

OPTIMAL comes from the word OPTIMISM +

MALAYSIA = OPTIMAL. OPTIMAL Group of Companies comprises of

three corporate entities as follows: OPTIMAL OLEFINS (MALAYSIA) SDN BHD OPTIMAL GLYCOLS (MALAYSIA) SDN BHD OPTIMALCHEMICALS (MALAYSIA) SDN BHD

Other key person that I have met in OPTIMAL are

Mr Hamzah Jamal, Team Development Coach for Ethylene Oxide Glycol (EOG) and Mr Zamri Japar, Head (Olefins).

Later in the evening, we went to BITES Cafe, Paka to have a BBQ dinner. The host for this dinner was Mr Mohamed Nazam and his wife, Pn Hamsinah from Exact Enegry Sdn Bhd. We were served with various Western dishes including grilled prawn and squid. It was raining heavily and the cafe was blacked out for at least two times where we were like having dinner during monsoon season.

DAY 2 (4 Aug 2010) On the last day of our trip, we went to

PETRONAS Penapisan Terengganu Sdn Bhd (PPTSB).

Welcoming speech and operation overview talk was given by the CEO of PPTSB, Mr Ahmad Hamizan Hasan. Other key persons I have met including Mr Jamil Hashim, the General Manager (Plant) as well as Mr Shuhaimi Mohamad (Executive Administration & Public Relations).

After that we were brought to visit the plant

by bus. Basically, PPTSB is the 1

st refinery in

Malaysia incorporated in 1982. It is divided into two major plants, KR1 or Kerteh Refinery 1 and KR2 or Kerteh Refinery 2.

KR2 is incorporated with another plant which

is Aromatics Malaysia Sdn Bhd. PPTSB processes the best crude oil in this

Asia Pacific region which is from Tapis because of the sweetness and lightness characteristics of the crude.

Two major products from Aromatics Malaysia

are benzene and paraxylene. Benzene is used as intermediate to make

other polymers or plastics or as solvent while paraxylene is mostly used in manufacturing of Terepthalic Acid (PTA).

I also had the chance to enter the Control

Room and observed the Panelman monitoring the plants operation from DCS (Distributed Control System).

After the plant tour, we had our lunch

whereby I enjoyed the lamb curry very much and again durian was served to complete the visit.

Next, we proceed to Mesra Mall for shopping

and moved to the airport to depart to Kuala Lumpur at 5.20 pm.

The Roundtable discussion generated active participation and interactions with lively, open and ‘sensitive’ questions raised from the floor and prompt answers and retorts from the Panelists. Questions raised touched on the removal of subsidies and what kind of tariff is to be expected from TNB to the consumers, will the increase in cost of generation be passed to the consumers, what should be the market price for using gas, what other option is there besides having to subsidize heftily to encourage solar energy vis-à-vis lower cost of using coal as practiced in other countries, exclusion of Bakun power in energy supply mix for transmission to Peninsula Malaysia, availability of gas supply, issue of security of supply, point on higher value-added for gas utilization by industry and non power sectors vis-à-vis usage in power sector and public perception of implementation of nuclear power. The positive feedback garnered from the Forum augurs well for organizing similar session for next year. MGA is indeed committed to organize more such fora in the near future which will be aligned to address energy and gas-related contemporary issues which are of great interest and would wield influential impact in one way or another on commercial businesses as well as on the daily living of the ordinary layman. Such Forum could also serve to provide a conducive platform for stakeholders i.e. gas suppliers, consumers, planners, service providers and policy makers of the day to meet and exchange views with the concerted aim to evolve win-win collaborations to contribute positively to the development, promotion, sustenance and effective and efficient utilization of our energy resources. We are looking forward to your support and participation for the coming Energy Forum 2011.
