Thoughts from Ground Level want to express my deep gratitude to everyone who

was here last Sunday. Together we got through adifficult morning. As you know, we were alldevastated by the news of Comair 5191. It feels sodifferent when a tragedy like this is fewer than threemiles from the church.

My morning began much the same way my Sunday mornings begin from week to week. At our house wenormally dont have the news on before I leave forchurch. The TV is usually showing Thomas the TankEngine , so I hadnt heard any news yet. I arrived at thechurch about 8:00am and Susanne called me to tell meabout the accident. She must have switched over to the

news. When we finished our conversation, I worriedabout a lot of you, hoping against hope that none of you was involved, hoping that at least some of the people onthe flight had survived, and also having that sinking feeling when you know how unlikely that would be.

I sat in my study for a moment, prayedfor everyone whose lives would be foreverchanged by this tragedy, and wondered whoin our church family that travels I should callto check and see that they were safely athome and not somewhere else.

I left messages for some folks, whichdidnt relieve any of my anxiety, and beganto wonder if a memorial service would bepart of my activities in these final days of August. Icalled a couple who have family in Atlanta and learnedthat they were out of harms way on a trip to Cincinnati.Relieved, I reached for the bulletin. What changesshould we make in our worship this morning? What didI need to change in my sermon notes for the day?

At about 8:20am, I walked over to the sanctuary.Linda was practicing, and I wanted her advice. Together

we decided to change the opening hymn. We hadplanned to sing Wesleys, O For a Thousand Tongues toSing , which is a wonderful hymn from our summer hymnlist. We both agreed it didnt fit the mood of a churchfamily gathering for worship a couple of hours after aterrible tragedy. There would be another day to sing thisgreat hymn. We chose instead a majestic hymn by JohnCalvin, I Greet Thee Who My Sure Redeemer Art.

I left the sanctuary to walk back over to the Academy building to prepare for Sunday school and metan elder heading over to choir practice. We stood thereon the gravel driveway and talked for a moment. As we

were talking, another church member drove up, parked, got out of his car and asked us whether we wanted acantaloupe. What a welcomed moment in a surreal

morning! Someone bringing a regular summer question

into a grief-filled morning. Maybe some things about thisday were going to be normal after all.

Most everyone had heard the news by the time theservice began at 10:00am. The mood was certainly subdued and Linda and I had decided to include a timeof prayer and then to sing the final stanza of Calvinshymn during the time of welcome and announcements. Iasked whether anyone had a family member, a co-

worker, a neighbor, or a friend on the plane, and no oneknew for sure yet. We prayed and then sang. Here is thestanza we sang. Its words seemed to fit the moment:

Our hope is in no other save in Thee; Our faith is built upon Thy promise free; Lord, give us peace, and make us calm and sure,That in Thy strength we evermore endure. Once the service began I remembered I had

forgotten to welcome visitors. I always do that, and wehad three. I made sure to tell them how happy I was tosee them as I greeted them at the door. After church one

family said they had decided to spend theday together as a family. That seemed right, and thats what my family did as well. By the end of the service some folks hadlearned sad news: in one case a boss, inanother a colleague, in another a friend.

During the childrens moment, thechildren were distracted. I could tell that

Sue was having a difficult time keeping their attentionand thats a rareoccurrence. Perhaps they sensed something terrible hadhappened. The choir sang Amazing Grace and I really appreciated that song in the service.

The sermon I had prepared for the day spoke of theplace of self in the community of faith. Like the children,I, too, was distracted as I preached because of theoverwhelming burden of the day. What I had hoped toconvey was that we come together as a community tosupport each other as part of the body of Christ. Wegather around the word to hear it read and proclaimed.

As individuals and as a community we respond to the word. Part of that response is to gather around a table tonourish our famished souls with the bread of life. That

will happen next week when we share communion.Last Sunday, I was grateful to be with the Pisgah

Church family so that we could share the burden of sadnews together. In the midst of that sad news, we werealso able to proclaim the good news: the one whoreceives the bread of life, Jesus Christ, the resurrectionand the life, will live forever.

I look forward to gathering at the table with you inthe early days of September, and wish you much graceand peace, Jon

The Pisgah Mens Study GroupFall session begins September 16, 2006.

We meet on Saturday mornings from 8:30 to 10:00oclock, and for the last few years we have had some tenor twelve senior men coming to meet together. We

would like to expand our study and discussions toinclude Pisgah men of all ages and invite any oneinterested to join our discussions this fall. We discuss a

wide range of subjects, such as Bible passages andreferences, works by widely acclaimed authors, and sometimes references to current topics of general interest.

We come together bringing various philosophicaland political views but in all cases we provide a forumfor any ideas and opinions to be offered and discussed.

We dont expect to always find the right answers to allquestions or agreement after all discussions. We dosuggest that those who come to join with us on Saturday mornings try to read the material to be discussed, bring an open mind, and be interested in verbal interaction

    with the group.

Our September 16th meeting will begin a study of the New Testament book of Luke and a reading of thefirst chapter of Luke would help all who come toparticipate and join in the discussions.

DCE NotesFall 2006 will be known as the year of SundaySchool Rejuvenation!

I hope your family will join us on September 10th when Pisgah moves back into the regular two-serviceschedule and Sunday School for all ages is offered. LastMay ended with a Sunday School CELEBRATION and

we will kick-off the new season with RALLY DAY and welcome everyone back. Join us for an Eye-OpenerBreakfast and hear about the new offerings in the area of Christian Education. All classes will actually start onSeptember 17.

Three year olds will be moving up to join the Foursthrough Kindergarteners. They will remain in a self-contained classroom with teachers Jamie Torp and Kelly Hill and will initially continue with traditionalcurriculum. Kindergarteners will be able to modelclassroom routines for the newer/younger children. InDecember, we will evaluate whether the Kindergartnersshould move into the Rotation Schedule at the first of the year.

Which brings us to our exciting news of moving intoa Rotation Model Sunday School for elementary CHILDREN. After talking with some of the teachersand parents of children, I believe that this is the righttime to try this format. We feel fortunate to be using material Pastor Jon put together with an educator in

Virginia, titled Unlocking the Treasures of the Bible. With a Rotation Model, children along with theirclassroom teacher, study the story and then, as with BibleCamp, travel to different workshop areas for an activity that re-enforces the lesson through varied learning experiences such as drama, puppets, art projects, crafts

and media. Elementary Students will be in two groups:2nd & 3rd Grades and 4 th & 5th Grades.

Aime Baston will continue to provide music. Wehave downstairs the piano that was in the choir room.

When the new piano was purchased for the sanctuary, the one it replaced was moved into the choir room andthe Sunday School benefited by having one moved to thedownstairs level. It will be put to good use!

In the area of Christian Education for YOUTH, thegoal is to separate the Middle School and the HighSchool classes. There is the potential for 12 MiddleSchoolers and 6 High Schoolers. Grades 6-8 willcontinue to meet upstairs. They have relayed their desirefor something different than the traditional curriculumand so we will start out the fall with the Mayberry Study. However, they will use a different format than what Iused during the summer. The Leader Guide actually hasthree parts to each episode and during the summer, wefocused on one. In their class, they will be on reflecting

what the scriptures are saying to them, at their age, before viewing the TV parable interpretation. Few

youth attended more than once or twice over thesummer and so it should not be repetitious. The High School class will move down into my

office for more of a round table discussion format.Hopefully, they will also be open to college studentsjoining their class periodically. We would also like togive the High School students the opportunity learn andserve, i.e. to prepare and assist teaching on a limitedbasis downstairs as rotation leaders, just as we request

with the adults. As of this writing, members of the CE Committee

are attempting to contact members of the on-going

ADULT Sunday School classes to see how we can assistthem this year. In our July meeting, the CE Committeediscussed that we hoped to offer three options for adultSunday School with the third one being a short-termelective course that would change every 6-8 weeks. Thispast summer, Jon conducted a class on a reportpresented at General Assembly on The Trinity. Therehave been requests for him to repeat this class at a laterdate. However, this Fall, Jon is going to teach a 6-8 week series on What is meant (and not meant) by the authority Scripture . Other suggestions include: Christian Parenting and an overview of different religions.

Also, in July, the CE Committee discussed keeping the folding door open and having an adult gathering timeat 9:30 AM, to get coffee, sing a song and have a prayertogether before going into Sunday School classes orChoirto help build unity among the adults.

Again, whether youve been involved in the past, Ihope youll come and support these new efforts in theSunday School program and Christian Education atPisgah.

    See you in Church!Sue

Talent Show Review Complete with Pictures!

On August 12, we celebrated Pisgahs talents withan awesome evening of family fun and entertainment!Master of Ceremonies, Jud Davis, amused the audience

with his politically correct jokes (punch lines punctuatedby Lantz Kindreds snare drum and cymbal.) The Choiropened with a rousing version of Send Down Your

Spirit. Piano soloists Kendall Johnson, Eric Jacobsonand Katherine Martin memorized and performed theirselections with perfection while the mother-daughterteam of Lisa and Kendall Johnson took the duet Heartand Soul to a jazzy piano conclusion. A comical skit by the Youth Group was a hoot (Two Suckers at the endof a Stick) followed by the women of the choir singing Mr. Sandman in 3-part harmony. There were brilliant

vocal performances by Chuck Martie singing and playing his guitar to James Taylors Youve Got a Friend, thehusband-wife team of the Reverends Jon and SusanneMartin singing Ill Fly Away, and a dramatic rendition

of Via Dolorosa by Leslie James. The father-daughterteam of Lantz and Sarah Kindred performed a daring drum duet, switching positions half-way through andback again. Martha Prewitt and Aime Bastons voicesblended beautifully in a song titled The Prayer, followed by a sassy selection called Disney Dazzle.Boy Scout Troop 1784 entertained the crowd with a skitentitled Mind Cleansing. The crowd was truly amusedby the many talents of Sue Henry (Beautiful Bessie,Cowboy, Bad Guy, Horse, Cow and Coyote) narrated by the Keiloresque talents of Abe Fosson. The evening endedappropriately with the mens choir singing, GoodnightSweetheart.

Inside the Academy Building there were arts andcrafts on display: baskets and stained glass by KatieBurrier, oil painting of Mick, the Bull by Dee Harper, leatherwork wallet by Linda Scott, card crafts by Lisa

Johnson, metal sculpture by Ken Scott, king-sized quiltand needlepoint belts by Carolyn Snipp, and hand-madecards by Ann Ortenberger.

I would like to extend personal thanks to Becky andPhil Wilder for their work in putting together the talentshow program, all the members of the Stewardshipcommittee for their input and follow-through to makethis event happen, and to all the performers for sharing their incredible talents with the Pisgah family.
