NEW MAN TO SERVE OUR PARISHES! As we say farewell to Fr. Denis, the last of the four seminarians who were assigned to our parishes this past year, I am delighted to welcome a new student for ministry, John Boutin. He will be doing super-vised ministry in our parishes this year. You may
already know him. So I asked him to share his very interesting story. As we work out the details of his
service to us we will tell you more. Fr. John Hello! I am so excited to begin serving at St. John the Baptist and Saint Thomas the Apostle Parishes! I grew up as an evangelical Protestant in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan. In high school I joined and later led a small group Bible
study, and as I prayed about college and my career path, I began to sense that God might be calling me to ministry in some way. At Oakland University (in Oakland County, MI) this inclination grew as I served in InterVarsity, a college campus ministry with chap-ters at many colleges around the country. I majored in religion, and during my studies I began to wonder why there were 10s of thousands of Protestant denom-inations, and I hoped to see an end to this disunity in the Church. After graduation, I felt that God was call-ing me to become a professor of religion and a cam-pus minister.
Seemingly by accident, after college God led me to first study the biblical languages of Hebrew and Greek as a guest student at the Catholic seminary in Detroit. Though I was just studying the languages in the classroom, I learned a lot about Catholic theology outside of the classroom. Though I had never ques-tioned the salvation of Catholics, I had strong disa-greements with what I knew about Catholic theology. What I learned shocked and scared me – the rationale for Catholic theology is not only logically consistent, but biblically based, and well supported by Church history. My fear of Catholic teaching being true and the implications of that for my life made me wonder if this might be the next way of how Jesus would draw me closer to him. Jesus was calling me to trust him even as I took the scary steps of pursuing truth by studying Catholic teaching which I knew might lead me to do something that I did not want to do: join the Catholic Church. But yet, this might be the will of Christ.
As I continued to study Catholicism, I started a Master of Divinity degree at Gordon-Conwell Theo-logical Seminary (GCTS) an evangelical, interdenom-inational seminary in South Hamilton, MA in the fall of 2018. By the start of my second year at GCTS, it was clear I needed to at least start the RCIA (the jour-ney into initiation into the Catholic Church) as I was becoming more and more convinced about the truth of Catholic doctrine. So, I started the RCIA at St. John's and St. Thomas in September 2019. I am so thankful for the discipleship I received from Fr. John and my sponsor, Josh Richards, during RCIA. By December of 2019 I was ready to be confirmed in the Catholic Church.
After a brief Christmas visit at home in Michi-gan I returned to MA and continued my RCIA classes as well as the rites along the way to Confirmation. I am thankful I was able to attend the ACTS retreat in March 2020 just before the quarantine started. It was a powerful experience where I met some wonderful men from our parishes. Because of the pandemic my con-firmation was delayed and I went home for the sum-mer when the spring semester ended. Thankfully as Mass was opened up for parishioners again, I was able to connect with my previous Hebrew professor from the Catholic seminary in Detroit who is also the priest of a parish in my hometown. After he spoke with Fr. John and the RCIA team at St. John the Baptist he asked me to come to Pentecost Mass on May 30 at his parish for Confirmation. There, with the other candi-dates and catechumens from the parish who also were unable to be confirmed at the Easter Vigil, I was final-ly confirmed and made my first Holy Communion as a Catholic! Though I look forward to studying at a Catho-lic seminary or university as I prepare to pursue a PhD, I am finishing my degree at GCTS, so I have returned to campus here in Massachusetts. My studies at GCTS continue to be helpful and relevant to me as a Catholic especially through the robust biblical stud-ies courses which involve reading and interpreting the original Hebrew and Greek texts. A ministry intern-ship is required so I am happy to know that not only will I be able to minister to Catholic students through InterVarsity at Endicott College, but I will also be serving you here in Peabody and Salem with Fr. John as my mentor and supervisor. I look forward to getting to know you and serving you in the Lord.

A medida

Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 20, 2020

At the Last Supper, Jesus instituted the Eucharist, or the "sacrifice of his body and blood," to "perpetuate the sacrifice of the cross throughout the ages," according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Eucharist is one of seven sacra-ments, or outward signs, that many Catholics believe was instituted by God to give grace. Typically, Catholic children are invited to receive Holy Communion at around the age of 7, but younger children will have questions about the Eucharist from attending Mass. Do your best to explain the Eucharist in simple terms that your child will understand.
Why do we do this? Read the four accounts of the Last Supper found in Matthew 26:17-30, Mark 14:12-26, Luke 22:7-39 and John 13:1-17:26. Use a children's picture Bible with illustrations to help your child understand the narrative.
We Share a Meal as a Family: Discuss the importance of food in your family life. Explain that you gather for meals not only to eat, but to share your day and enjoy the company of others. Similarly, the church gathers as a family at Mass to receive spiritual nourishment -- the body and blood of Christ -- spiritual renewal and the strength to live out a Christian life in the coming week.
How can bread and wine be Jesus? Answer your child's questions about the Eucharist. As Catholics, we believe that Christ is truly present -- body, blood, soul and divinity -- in the Eucharist. Your child will almost certainly wonder how Christ can be present and unseen. Pope Benedict XVI explained the mystery of the Eucharist to children by making several analogies. You can't see an electric current, but you can see light. You cannot see the human soul, but you can see the soul in action through words and actions.
Jesus is our Friend. Talk about friendship. Most young children value friendships highly, so they will understand when you explain that Christ is present in the Eucharist in order to stay close to his friends.
What does it mean that the Mass is a sacrifice? Give examples of sacrifice. For instance, your child sacrifices a toy she loves in order to make a friend happy while playing. Explain that, at Calvary, Christ sacrificed his life out of love for us. Through the Eucharist, we unite ourselves with his gift and receive grace.
Why do we go to Mass? Talk about the effects of the Eucharist. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that just as food gives strength to the body, the Eucharist gives strength to the soul. Through the reception of Holy Communion, the Christian receives the grace to resist temptation and the strength to act with love. Additionally, the Eucharist unites the whole Christian family with Christ.

The Thrift Shop has been doing extraordinarily well since we have re-opened. We have purchased a new sign and in the
eight years we have been opened we've raised over $240,000.00 for St Thomas. We have lost a few volunteers, so we are always looking for help, maybe a Saturday, Monday or Wednesday once a month. We need to fill up our rooms with products, such as; Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations,
pots, pans dishes, flatware, jewelry, small appliances, bed lin-ens, quilts, glassware, small furniture (no mattresses or TV's).
Toys that are complete, puzzles etc. Right now we can use quality winter clothes, scarves, mittens, gloves. Men's dress

Thank you ever so much for your wondrous generosity, always! So many of you have contrib-uted significantly with kindness of prayers and donations, and this has allowed our outreach ministry to flourish amaz-ingly throughout these challenging days, as needs have been met in great amounts during this pandemic. I look now to the upcoming winter, as we all know that the cooler nights and then days are soon upon us. This weather pattern brings so many different burdens upon those living outdoors, and that population has grown a bit since last year. I ask you to consider the following needed items to donate, in prepara-tion for this particular upcoming season: blankets (any size), comforters, heavy sweatshirts (hooded preferably-for men or women), large compartment backpacks, winter boots (any size, men or women), pullover sweaters for men (any size), fleece jackets for men or women. I also request symbols of our faith, such as rosaries, pocket-size statues, medals, bracelets, keychains, as every week when our brothers and sisters visit the St. Teresa of Calcutta Center for clothes, showers, and toiletries, I place these items upon a table in the hall, and every week I need to replenish them, as they are taken and worn by all…and that, of course, is the wonder of God! Again, many, many thanks for all of your generosity and support! Pat Adam
Suggested prayer of Spiritual Communion Jesus, really present in the Most Holy Sacrament of the
altar, since I cannot now receive thee under the sacramental veil, I beseech thee, with a heart full of love and longing, to come spiritually into my soul through the Immaculate Heart of thy most Holy Mother, and to abide with me, thou in me,
and I in thee, in time and in eternity. Amen.

Our priests are often at the center of efforts that build
strong support systems for all of us. In addition to
their daily pastoral responsibilities, they help establish
social service organizations, offer spiritual support for first
responders, operate parish food pantries, and recently, in
response to the pandemic, put their lives at risk to provide
comfort and peace to those suffering with COVID-19.
Healthier priests build stronger communities. And the
Clergy Health and Retirement Trust (CHRT) is dedicated to
keeping our priests healthy.
This September, you can support the CHRT’s mission
by giving to the special collection at Masses on
September 19/20. Every gift makes a difference and is
a symbol of gratitude for all our priests who don’t just
observe need in our communities; they seek it out so
they can respond.

Very often when people are in crisis, we find a priest
standing nearby to help. Our priests are often at the center
of efforts that build strong support systems for all of us.
In addition to their daily pastoral responsibilities, they help
establish social service organizations, offer spiritual support
and guidance for first responders, operate food pantries out
of their parishes, and recently, in response to the pandemic,
put their lives at risk to provide comfort and peace for those
suffering with COVID-19.
Healthier priests build stronger communities. And the Clergy
Health and Retirement Trust (CHRT) is dedicated to keeping
our priests healthy.
This September, you can support the CHRT’s mission by
giving to the special collection at Masses on September
19/20. Every gift makes a difference and is a symbol of
gratitude for all our priests who don’t just observe need in
our communities; they seek it out so that they can respond.
Donate now online at clergytrust.org or scan the QR code to give with Venmo, Apple/Google Pay, and PayPal via Givebutter.
PLEASE SUPPORT OUR PRIESTS IN SEPTEMBER
Funds from the September collection
are managed by the Clergy Health and
Retirement Trust, an independently
managed trust with a majority lay
board of trustees. The funds are used
for the sole benefit of active and
senior priests in good standing.
