As kids leave, ask them why they’re wearing a fire sticker.

Connect Time (20 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (20 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together.

Every sticker, every time. That means we check every single kid’s sticker before he/she leaves the room, and we make sure that it matches his/her grown up’s sticker. This is vital to the safety of kids, and we want adults to know that they can always count on their kids being safe in Kids’ Club.

If we’re certain that God is truly GOD, we’ll act differently. We’ll love him, trust him and want to follow him. We’ll know that nothing we face is too hard for him. Today, just focus on this story and the miraculous way he revealed himself to hundreds of people.

1 Kings 18 God is the one true God.

Elijah and the prophets of Baal.

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they’re going to hear.

ROBOTS● Have kids stay in one large group and spread across the room. Tell kids that in this

game they are “robots.”● Choose two kids to be the “robot mechanics” and their job is to fix broken robots.

(If you have a really big group, you can choose more. If you have a very small group, choose only one.)

● Give each robot kid a marker or glue stick to put on top of their head. It’s their “battery” and if it falls off, the robot is broken, and can’t move! They have to wait for a robot mechanic to come find them, pick up their battery (marker or glue stick) and put it back on their head.

● Play the music from the first slide of the keynote and let the robot game begin! ● Tips:

○ To change it up, periodically pause the music and choose some new robot mechanics, and let the old robot mechanics become robots.

○ If kids are really good at balancing, and you want to get some more “broken” robots on the floor, call out commands for the kids to do instead of walking (i.e. skipping, hopping on one foot, walking backwards, etc.) This will make it harder to balance the objects.

○ Encourage kids to ACT like robots as they walk around!

TALK ABOUT IT ● Are robots real people? Why or why not?● Talk about the best or worst parts of your week.

Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader’s instructions.

Page 3: September 2-3, 2017 Elijah and the prophets of Baal ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/... · Elijah and the prophets of Baal. GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging

Goal: Kids will (1) understand that God is the one true God and (2) recognize that we can and should follow him.

Why? There’s a lot of idols in the world trying to get kids’ attention; we want to make sure that kids know there’s only ONE true God, and he loves us more than anything!

Tip: Today’s story questions are phrased a little differently to help kids retell the story through drawing, acting out, or answering like normal.

LEARN THE VERSE● First, read aloud the verse as a group. It’s is broken up into parts, so have kids repeat

each part after you say it. Repeat the verse a few different times, but in different funny voices each time (squeaky voice, deep voice, robot voice, etc.).

○ John 14:1 ○ Do not let ○ your hearts be troubled. ○ Trust in God, ○ and trust also in me.

RETELL THE STORY● Lay out a large sheet of tear off-paper and set out markers (Make sure the paper is

big enough for everyone to draw on. You may need a few sheets.)● Tell kids to answer the questions, and do a physical action to go along with it (shown in

parenthesis). Then give them a simple prompt to write/draw on the paper, as a visual “answer”. (Kids can do only the acting, or they do both the acting and drawing. Whatever works best for your group!)

○ Did Elijah follow the one true God? (Yes: smile, or draw a smiley face)○ Did King Ahab and Queen Jezebel follow the real God? (No: make your face

sad, or draw a sad face.)○ What happened to Ahab’s altar when he prayed to the fake god, Baal?

(Nothing!)○ What happened to Elijah’s altar when he prayed to God? (God burned it up and

everything around it; pretend like you’re a raging fire and your hands are the flames. Or, draw lots of fire all over the paper.

(Continued on next page.)

RETELL THE STORY (Continued)● How would you feel if everyone else believed in a fake god, and you were the only

one who stood up and followed the TRUE God? (Let kids answer as they like, and if they want, draw a picture or word to show it.)

● Is God real today? What do you love about Him? (Let kids answer as they like, and if they want, draw a picture or word to show it.)

MAKE IT PERSONAL● Give each kid a fire sticker and remind them that God showed his amazing REAL

power when Elijah asked him to burn up the altar with fire, something that ONLY the one true God could do!

Extra time? Have kids do a coloring sheet.

Today’s lesson calls for prayer at the beginning, as well as the end. The purpose of this is to invite God into Large Group before we even get started, and ask him to be an active part of the lesson!

*You’ll need two chairs and a crown prop for part of today’s script. Make sure the crown is fastened (no tape needed).

Here’s a link to today’s video:

God’s Story / Elijah:https://vimeo.com/159489909

Note for kindergarten:There’s an extra worship song at the of today’s script that’s aimed at the kindergarten age group. If you want, try it out as an extra option, or to replace one of the other songs!

*Click to play intro music.● Welcome: Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids’ Club. We’re so

glad to have you here! We’re going to do something a little different today. We’re going to start off with prayer, before we do anything else!

● Pray: God, thank you for bringing us to Kids’ Club today. We want to invite you to be a part of our Large Group. Please open our ears, and help us listen to whatever you want to say. Amen!

● Say: So in Connect Time, what did you all pretend to be? (Let’s kids respond.) That’s right, robots! Can you do your best robot impression right now? (Respond along with kids.)

● Ask: Now even though some robots look like people and maybe even act like people….are they real people? (Let kids respond.) No way! They’re just pretending to be. They don’t have brains and a heart and muscles like we do. They have buttons and wires!

● Say: Let’s watch a video and see how a robot named Bamax is trying to act like a human, but he’s not quite sure….

● Video: Bamax Fist Bump● Say: Bamax was pretty funny, but he still wasn’t a real

person, was he? He’s more like a fake, pretend person!

WELCOME AND INTRO

Main Goal: Review Connect Time and introduce the lesson.

Notes:

Page 6: September 2-3, 2017 Elijah and the prophets of Baal ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/... · Elijah and the prophets of Baal. GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging

INTRO: ELIJAH

Main Goal: Introduce Elijah, and illustrate the circumstances of God’s family under King Ahab and Queen Jezebel.

GOD SHOWS UP

Main Goal: Understand how God showed up in a big way when Elijah called on him.

● Say: Today, we’re going to hear about a fake, pretend god who people THOUGHT was real. People called him “Baal” (sounds like “bail”). But guess what? Do you think this fake god could do anything? (Let kids respond.)

● Say: Nope! Because there’s only ONE real, true God: OUR God! And He’s the one we should follow and worship and trust in.

● (Image: Elijah) In our story there’s a guy named Elijah. Can you say, “Elijah”? (Let kids respond.) He was a prophet, which means he heard messages from God, and then shared them with other people. God actually spoke to him, and showed him things that not everyone could see.

● (Image: Ahab and Jezebel) There was also a king and queen, named Ahab and Jezebel, who did not love God at all. Instead, they worshipped the false god called Baal. Because of this, God decided to let something bad happen: There would be no rain for three years.

● Say: If we didn’t have rain for three years, the plants would dry up and die, we would have barely any food, and of course, we’d be SO THIRSTY. Let’s all pretend like we’re so hot, and thirsty, and hungry (Act really overdramatic as you encourage kids do the same! Act like your throat is parched, you can barely walk, etc.)

● Say: Let’s watch a video and see what happened next. As you watch, pay attention to how God shows everyone that he’s the one, true God, and not some fake imitation.

● Video: God’s Story / Elijah ● Ask: So did God show everyone that’s the one, true, REAL

God? (Let kids respond.) Yep, and he did it in an amazing way!

● (Image: 2 altars) Let’s imagine for a minute what this would have been like. Imagine that an epic contest is about to happen on Mt. Carmel. Can I have two volunteers help me? (Choose two kids to come up, and set up 2 chairs on the presentation area.)

● Say: So on one hand we’ve got King Ahab (Pick one of the volunteers to be Ahab, and have him stand beside one of the chairs. Give him a crown prop to wear.) And then on the other hand, we’ve got Elijah, all by himself…(Have the other volunteer be Elijah, and stand next to the second chair.)

Page 7: September 2-3, 2017 Elijah and the prophets of Baal ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/... · Elijah and the prophets of Baal. GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging

● Say: Now remember, Ahab has gathered a huge group of false prophets to help him call down Baal, and remember, since Baal was a fake god, these prophets were fake too! So I’ll need some more volunteers. (Pick several more kids to come stand with “Ahab.” Or if you have a smaller group, just one or two.) Okay, you guys are the false prophets.

● Say: The two altars are set up, and ready to be burned with fire. So first, let’s have Ahab and his prophets pray to Baal. Can you guys act like you’re trying really hard to get Baal to come down, and dance and shout and jump up and down? (Let kids respond then play the following loop.)

● (Click to play loop of crickets.)● Ask: Well that’s awkward! What happened when they

prayed to Baal? (Let kids in audience respond.) Yep...NOTHING! Because Baal was a false God, and there’s no way he could show up in a real way.

● Say: Now let’s go to Elijah. Will you pretend to pour some water on your altar, like Elijah did in the story? And act like you’re praying to the real God? (Let “Elijah” respond, click to play following loop.)

● (Click to play loop of fire.)● Say: What did God do then? Yep, He burned up the altar,

and everything around it! He did even more than Elijah asked! And then everyone shouted, “The Lord is God! The Lord is God!” Can you guys shout that? (Let kids shout.) Great job! (Dismiss all the kids from stage.)

● Say: When God burned up the altar, he showed Elijah that he is real, and he can do incredible miracles that NO ONE else can do. And do you remember what happened AFTER God burned up the altar? (Let kids respond.)

● (Click to play loop of thunderstorm.) He sent rain! Finally, the long, dry, hot drought was over. Ahhh.... (Act relaxed and relieved.) God showed his power AGAIN.

● Say: So is God still real today? (Let kids respond.) Yep, He’s the one true God, the one we should worship, the one we should love, the one we should follow, and the one we should trust.

● Say: There’s another way that God showed us he’s the one true God: He sent his son Jesus to rescue us from all the wrong things in the world. Jesus actually came to earth to be with us, and show us how much God loves us.

MT. CARMEL COMES TO LIFE

Main Goal: Physically reenact the story of how God showed his power on Mt. Carmel.

GOD IS REAL

Main Goal: Understand that our God is the one, true God, and he is still real and alive today!

Page 8: September 2-3, 2017 Elijah and the prophets of Baal ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/... · Elijah and the prophets of Baal. GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging

● Say: In the Bible, Jesus tells us that because our God is real, and he can do amazing things, we don’t have be worried or afraid! Let’s read this verse together:

● Slide: John 14:1 Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.

● Say: Since God is real and can do anything, let’s tell him that we believe in him and want to follow him. He is the one TRUE God! If you want to declare that you believe in him, let’s yell it together as loud as we can: “You are God!” (Lead kids in yelling it out!)

● Pray: God, thank you for being a God who shows up. We’re so glad that you want be close to us, and will meet us right where we are. Amen!

● Say: Let’s show God that we want to experience him right now, through worship!

● Music Video: You Are● Music Video: More Like You Are

*Alternate music video option for kindergarten only:● Music Video: Clap Your Hands

RESPONSE TIME

Main Goal: Let kids actively respond to the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER AND WORSHIPWrap up the lesson with group prayer and worship together!
