Equal Opportunity Policy

The Burns Flat-Dill City School District com-

plies with Titles VI of the Civil Rights Act of

1964, Title IX of the education Amendments of

1972. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of

1973, and their implementing regulations

administered by the U.S. Department of

Health, Education, and Welfare’s Office for

Civil Rights. If also complies with Title VIII of

the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and is implement-

ing regulations administered by the U.S

Department of Health, Education, and Wel-

fare’s Office for Civil Rights. It also complies

with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and

is implementing regulations administered by

the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity

Commission. The institution does not discrimi-

nate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex,

age, national origin, or handicap in admission

or access to, or treatment or employment in,

its program and activities.

Allison Walker is the

daughter and youngest

child of Ron and Theresa

Walker. She has been in-

volved in Cheer, Academics,

Vocal, Spanish Club, Youth

Alive, and SWAT. While at

BF-DC, her most memora-

ble moment was 8th grade

graduation and making

friends that will last a life-

time. Since elementary

school, along with making

more friends, Allison has

grown to be more responsi-

ble and learned to embrace

life a little more. During her

school career, the one who

has helped her most was

God, who gives her strength

in all she does and her par-

ents who have encouraged

her to do her best in every-

thing she does. After high

school graduation, Allison

plans to go to college to

become a pediatrician. She

wants everyone to know she

is a creative, talkative per-

son who loves to tell jokes,

spend time with family and

friends, and have fun.

Cheyenne McDaniel is

the daughter of Barbara

Fields. She is involved in

basketball, yearbook and

newspaper. Cheyenne is a

water girl for the football

boys. She is a senior this

year and plans to attend

SWOSU at Weatherford af-

ter she graduates. Her best

friends are Katie Birdwell,

Aubrey Mendez and Kaitlyn

Utt. Cheyenne spends most

of her time with her friends

or at football games. She

loves having fun and mak-

ing unforgettable memories

by living life to the fullest.

Deanna Modesto is the

17 year old daughter of

Emily Modesto and Larry

Dixon of Burns Flat, Oklaho-

ma. Her Grandparents are

Ladonna and Danny Aycox

of Elk City, Oklahoma. This

will be Deanna’s first full

year at Burns Flat-Dill City

High School. She was only

here the last semester of

last year. She is currently

involved in Basketball.

Deanna Says she has

learned that high school is a

big change. She said “You

have got to know when

something you are stressed

over is worth causing a fuss

over or just walking away”.

Deanna’s Mom, Dad, Grand-

parents, and close friends

have been a big part in

guiding her in the right di-

rection and helping her to

never give up, standing up

for what she believes in

even if she is alone, and

being nice and attempting

to be the bigger person to

someone who might have

been mean to her.

Finishing High School as a

BF-DC Eagle is not where

she thought she would be

but she definitely looks for-

ward to finishing High

School with some great

friends she has made since

she’s been here.

Lastly, she hopes everyone

has a Great Year!!!!

Hannah Baca is the

daughter of Donald and

Lovena Haas. She has been

involved in many activities

in her five years at Burns

Flat-Dill City schools. Activi-

ties include: track, cheer-

leading, S.W.A.T., Spanish

Club, and Vocal. When Han-

nah graduates high school,

she wishes to go to college

to become a radiologist.

The most memorable event

of her many years attending

this school is when she

graduated from the eighth

grade. Hannah feels she

has definitely changed for

the better since elementary

school. She believes that

she now knows how to ap-

preciate the things she has,

she has grown closer to her

friends and grown to be

more mature. She also

feels that her mother has

definitely helped her and

been her rock in her many

years here. Her mother has

supported her through all

the ups and downs in

school including arguments

with her friends, bad grades

and cheerleading. She

wants the students and

teachers at BF-DC schools

to remember her as a bright

and energetic person who

loves life and is fun to be

around.

Katie Birdwell is the

daughter of Jill and Bobby

Birdwell. She has been in-

volved in basketball, fast-

pitch softball, cross-country,

football water girl, track,

slow-pitch softball, and golf.

She is also involved in student

council and FCA. She hasn’t

decided what she wants to be

after she graduates, but she

does know it is going to be

something that makes her

happy. One of the most mem-

orable moments she has had

in this school is getting to start

as a freshman on the high-

school basketball team during

regionals. If you ask her how

she has changed since ele-

mentary, she’ll say, “I realized

school just gets harder and so

does the drama.” Mr. Price,

her high-school math teacher,

and Mrs. Day, her freshman

English teacher, were the two

people she said was always

there for her no matter what.

For those who don’t know her,

Katie will get the job done, she

loves sports and having fun

more than anything, and her

quote she lives by is, “If it’s not

worth it, then why do it when

you can do something that

makes you happy.”

Ryan Clark is the son of

Sarah and Chris Clark. Ryan is

a junior at BF-DC Schools and

has attended BF-DC all of his

life. He has participated as

basketball player in elemen-

tary, junior high, and high

school. Ryan says “I love bas-

ketball, it is my favorite sport”.

When Ryan graduates from

high school he would like to

find a job where he can make

a good honest living. Ryan

thinks he has changed in his

years as a student by becom-

ing wiser. His family has

helped him with his school

career by supporting him and

encouraging him to do his

work and be successful. They

have always supported him by

attending his basketball

games and cheering him on.

He wants everyone to remem-

ber after he graduates as

someone that was here to

learn and have a good time.

Sierra Jacobs is the daugh-

ter of Stephanie Jacobs. Sierra

has been involved in Vocal

Music and FFA. She would like

to go to college and become a

singer. Sierra says she doesn’t

have a memorable moment at

BF-DC. Sierra has changed in

many different ways since her

elementary days, she has be-

come more stand-offish and

she says her self esteem is not

as high as it was when she

was in elementary. The

people who have helped

her most in her school ca-

reer are her mother and

friends. The way they have

helped her is by encourag-

ing her to do the best that

she can. Sierra says that

she is very shy and really

doesn’t care to talk. Sierra

also says sometimes she

feels alone, even around

people. Sierra likes to

speak what’s on her mind.

She doesn’t like reading or

really talking in front of

crowds. Sierra’s favorite

subject is vocal music and

she loves to sing country

music. Her mom and her

friends have encouraged

her so much throughout

her life and she enjoys

them a lot, especially when

she talks to them. Even

though she is shy, she real-

ly does like talking to her

friends. She says her

friends make her happy

and will help her anyway

Mrs. Howes, the teacher

for Will Rogers 2A students

applied for a grant from

Pets in the classroom

through Pet Smart, this past

summer. The class was

awarded coupons to be re-

deemed through Pet Smart.

The coupons were used to

purchase Yoshi, a Fancy

Bearded Dragon.

The students will be re-

searching Yoshi’s native

land, his diet, his natural

habitat, as well as other

interesting information

about him. They will send

pictures to Pet Smart and

keep them updated about

Yoshi’s progress.

Yoshi is really a neat

little guy and everyone is

enjoying him already. The

class will be sharing him

with the other second grade

classrooms and inviting

them to join in on the jour-

ney to learn about him.

5th Grade Studies Cells The Will Rogers Elemen-

tary 5th grade started out

the year by studying cells.

After learning the parts of a

cell they made edible cells.

The students all thought it

was a lot of fun, but pretty

messy.

The 5th grade classes

also received two grants for

math and social studies.

The first grant is from Colo-

nial Williamsburg. As a re-

cipient of this grant, 5th

grade classes will have ac-

cess to OETA broadcasts on

various topics of early Amer-

ican history from October –

April. The second grant re-

ceived was from “Think

Through Math”.

“Think Through Math” is

an internet based program

where students work at

their own pace on math

skills. There are a total of

35 lessons to complete be-

fore state testing in April.

Students will be spending 2

hours per week on the pro-

gram.

The students and teach-

ers are excited about the

new school year and they

hope the two grants will

make the year a success,

especially on state tests.

WR Elementary Library Makes Changes The Will Rogers Elemen-tary Library has made many changes for the new school year. The library is getting a brand new look to go with their new books and new librarian. The new librarian Mrs. Lee has made several changes in the way the li-brary looks. Shelves were moved to allow access to the windows and it has helped to brighten the li-brary atmosphere. Other shelves were taken out of the library to make room for a new reading rug. The older worn books are being removed from the shelves

and replaced with new books and Mrs. Linn is hap-pily using a brand new li-brary catalog and book check out system. Mrs. Linn and Mrs. Lee have been working very diligently to make the li-brary a bright, fun, interest-ing learning environment. The WR library will now be open Tuesday nights until 7:00 pm for parents, students, and family mem-bers to check out books, watch movies, do fun activi-ties, get homework help, and to READ.

Book Review

In the book, The Dark Divine, written by Bree Des-

pain, Grace Divine is the pastor’s daughter. She is a straight-

A student and a gifted artist at her and her siblings’ private

Christian academy.

Her past soon comes back to haunt her when an old

flame, Daniel Kalbi reappears. It seems like he’s just there

to get under her skin. But soon, the secrets start to surface.

Why, after years of silence, does the infamous Markham

Street Monster continue its attacks shortly after Daniel

moves back into town? What could Daniel be hiding?

This is a riveting book that will keep you on the edge

of your seat until the very last page. The Dark Divine is highly

recommended.

Cross Country Hopes for

Greatness The BF-DC 2013-2014

Cross Country team hopes

to be as great this year as

last year. Last year the high

-school girls threw a team

together and got 3rd in state.

The team had two senior

runners that graduated, so

the rest of the girls have to

give it their all this year.

The team is practicing every

morning at 6:00 am for 69

days up until Regional’s.

Both the junior high and

the high school CC teams

went to Watonga for a meet

on September 7th. All of the

runners did very well but

Kaitlyn Utt placed 17th and

received a medal. The high

school girls’ team placed 4th

overall.

The high school girls run-

ning this year are Darian

Hargis, Katie Birdwell, Kait-

lyn Utt, Shaydie Villegas,

Timber Flores, and Jennifer

Johnson. Coach Loftiss says

of his cross country girls, “I

expect them to practice

hard and focus on the goal,

which is to do better than

third this year in state.”

The junior high students

running cross country this

year are Caitlin Johnson,

Jordan Weese, Kayela Sta-

ples, McKenzie Weese,

Brooklyne Hargis, Brock

Bennett, Kobi Villegas, Dal-

ton Webb, and Nacota

Football Has New Coaches

The Burns Flat-Dill City

School’s Football team this

year is coached by Scott

Renken and Nathan Loftiss.

When asking Jose Chavar-

ria, a junior, if he thought

having a new coach again

this year would affect the

team, he replied “I take it as

a fresh start, another way to

improve.” When asking

Coach Renken if he felt like

the boys would have a suc-

cessful year this year, he

replied enthusiastically, “I

feel like we will be very suc-

cessful this year.”

The Eagles started their

season off on September 6th

with a home game against

Crossings Christian Acade-

my. They were prepared for

the battle with a roaring pep

rally, the first of the school

year. Many cheers and

chants helped to get every-

one in the football playing

mood.

The Eagles lost the game

38—0 but gave their all dur-

ing all 4 quarters. The boys

worked very hard and came

within just a few feet of

scoring. The crowd in stand

was large and supported the

team all the way to last

horn.

The next football game

is against Watonga on Fri-

day September 13th at

Watonga.

Jr. High Softball Dominating

Junior-high softball this

year has been dominant.

They have won 8 games out

of 9. The girls played for

third in their conference

tournament here at home

against Cordell on the 5th

of September. The high

school girls’ softball team

has so far not won a game

but have played hard and

not given up. They still have

many more games and

tournaments to come, and

are looking forward to being

the underdogs come dis-

tricts.

When asking Coach

Steffes, the assistant

coach for both teams, what

he thought were some of

the highlights for the past

junior-high games, he said

“ Jordan Weese threw a no

hitter in the Sayre game,

and so far they had been

undefeated.” Coach Jared

Meget said, “I have high

hopes for all the high-

school girls to have fun.”

The BF-DC vocal choir is

sponsored by Mrs. Brown.

Any student in vocal music

may choose to participate

in the different competi-

tions. Mrs. Brown gives the

students the options of

what competitions they

would like to attend. Some

of the different competi-

tions the students can

choose from are Western

Oklahoma Honor Choir, dis-

trict contest, Veterans Day

performances, and the Tri-

State Honor Choir. Stu-

dents that receive a superi-

or rating on their songs at

District are selected to go

the state vocal contest.

Mrs. Brown said “My expec-

tations for the competitors

are to always practice and

to do the best they can”.
