Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time & Grandparent’s Day
In Christ / En Cristo,
Fr. Cal Christiansen
On Monday, August 28th, the teachers at St. Pius X School and staff at the parish office took a step away from their day-
to-day work and gathered for their annual off-site retreat. This was held at St. Cecilia’s in Stanwood.
Mitch Roberts gave a presentation on DISC, a personality study to better understand work styles, how to build more
effective relationships and to work as a team instead of two separate entities. The day began with Mass and ended with
adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
It was a wonderful opportunity to grow in our faith and self-knowledge in order to serve our parish family more
effectively. A great day for all of us, gathered together in fellowship, learning, laughter and prayer.
copania, aprendisaje y oracion.

Living Water Prayer Group Meditation
by Dr. Kerry McMahon
“All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting and reviling must be
removed from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one
another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has
forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32
Father in Heaven,
Why is it so difficult to be kind and compassionate in moments
of distress? Why do we take up our sword first and our love
last? This scripture are truly words by which to live. For as we
forgive, we will be forgiven. Regardless of the scenario, you
have called us to respond in grace and the fullness of love; not as
doormats to be walked upon, but as foot washers with tender
hearts. At the expense of our own pride, remind us to be Your
perfect instrument on earth, even if the canvas is rough and
unwelcoming.
Forgive us, Father, for the times in which we’ve sought an eye
for an eye, in those moments when we repaid stubbornness with
stubbornness and pettiness with pettiness - forgive our lack of
grace. You ask us to rise above our own egos and respond in
charity and selflessness. Jesus never acted poorly or justified
bad behavior. He always responded in love.
Our hearts are so imperfect, easily lacking in sacrifice. We look
forward to the day of complete union with You, where our love
will be made perfect. Until that day, grant us the grace to for-
give quickly, not hold grudges and not allow bitterness and re-
sentment find a home in us. Give us soft, kind, merciful hearts.
Help us to offer God responses instead of self-protective atti-
tudes. When those we hold dear have difficult days, sleepless
nights and stressful weeks, we pray our love is greater than
those struggles. Remind us that on any given day, everyone has
a bigger story than the chapter we happened to walk into. Give
us long fuses and short memories when it comes to the broken-
ness of others.
Father, make it impossible for us to not love well so that one day
we may truly be Christ-like in all we do.
Come join us for Living Water Prayer Group on Fridays in the
Social Hall at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is most welcome!
Starting this Weekend
Beginning this weekend, our St. Pius X
Spanish Mass will begin at 1:00 p.m. in-
stead of at 6:00 p.m.
This will probably cause a few parking
issues at first and some confusion with
regard to coffee hours, but hang in there,
people … everything will work out for the
best!
Promise!

have an immediate family member make the call for you. Names will be
removed after three months, or sooner at your request. You are welcome to
return names to the prayer list if they’ve been removed.
Will you Say a Prayer?
When you’re in the Adoration Chapel, please take a copy
of the bulletin with the prayer list (above) … or find a copy
of this list posted, and say a prayer for the sick and
infirmed in our parish family.
This can be accomplished by simply saying, ‘Please keep
the people on this list near You and Your will be done,’ or,
quietly read each name to yourself and say, ‘Lord, please
show mercy on these people who are sick.’
By doing this each time you’re in the Chapel, there are
prayers going heavenward for each and every person on
this list, 24-hours a day, 365 days a year.
Prayer is a Very Powerful Resource for All of Us!

Rachel’s Corner Hope and Healing After Abortion
“This retreat is a safe place. We were guided
by the team into places of the heart which we had blocked and
repressed up to now. The location is beautiful and peaceful. Having

Wishes You a Blessed Week
In today’s Gospel Jesus says, “… where two
or three are gathered in My name, there am I in the midst of
them.”
In August, through your generous gift, the St. Pius X
Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul enabled the
poor to experience Jesus’ presence by assisting 51 families -
providing 46 bags of food, $304.27 for utilities, $715 for
housing and $450 for furniture and clothing.
Thank you and God bless you!

Come join us again on Sunday, October 7th!
I wasn’t raised in a particularly religious family. However, in my
late teens, our family started attending the Episcopal church with
which I was affiliated until I was baptized into the Roman
Catholic faith aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) on February 7,
1977. Confirmed into the faith in a church in Wichita, KS in 1978,
I never once heard of a Deacon. Oh, I was aware that in the
Protestant faith, deacons were considered to be elders and
revered members of the church, but had no idea they existed in
the Catholic Church.
So, I was confused when, in 1999, Msgr. Joseph Cosgrove at Holy
Cross, introduced our first Deacon, Jerry Heyer. The question
immediately arose in my mind, ‘What is a Deacon?’ Perhaps
some of you have had the same question.
Those of you who are steeped in our Catholic faith will know that
the Church has had deacons throughout its history. Diaconal
service is mentioned in Hebrew scriptures but was never defined
as one holding ecclesial office until mentioned in the New
Testament. Timothy 3:8-13 sets forth the qualifications
necessary for both bishops and deacons.
However, for more than 1,000 years, the diaconate was
considered the final ordination before becoming a priest, known
as ‘transitional deacons.’ The Second Vatican Council
established the permanent diaconate and the first permanent
deacons were ordained in the United States in 1969.
In the hierarchy of the Church, the permanent deacon is the
lowest ranking ecclesial office and is ordained for the service of
the church in liturgy, word and charity. Throughout the world,
there are nearly 70,000 permanent deacons - all of whom serve
at the discretion of the bishop.
The title of deacon derives from the Greek word, ‘diakonos’
which means ‘servant.’ The permanent deacon is ordained by the
bishop and is permanently and publicly configured to Christ the
Servant, and with priests, share the pastoral responsibility of the
bishop to care for all people of the diocese in which he serves. A
deacon keeps one foot in the clerical world and the other in the
secular world and in this way, with the Holy Spirit, provides
witness to God in the marketplace.
Very simply stated, the aforementioned is what a deacon is.
There’s a lot more to the permanent diaconate and I’d be glad to
entertain any other quesetions. For the moment, however, I am
glad you asked!
Glad You
Asked!

September 5, 2017
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
With deep alarm we learned this morning of the cancellation of the DACA program and a schedule to phase-out the pro-gram in the next six months, unless Congress acts to pass a legislative solution. We want to express clearly at this time our concern for all the young people – Americans – who are affected by this troubling decision. We know many “Dreamers” in western Washington and admire the extraordinary contributions they are making to our communities and the vibrancy of our parishes. To penalize them because they entered the United States without documents as minors with their parents is unjust and does not reflect the proud tradition of our country.
As Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, said today, “These youth entered the U.S. as minors and often know America as their only home. The Catholic Church has long watched with pride and admiration as DACA youth live out their daily lives with hope and determination to flourish and contribute to society: continuing to work and provide for their families, continuing to serve in the military, and continuing to receive an education. Now, after months of anxiety and fear about their futures, these brave young people face deporta-tion.”
With Cardinal DiNardo and the excellent staff of the USCCB, we intend to strongly urge Congress to pass a legislative solution that is humane and fair. Not to do so would be to turn away from our very own sisters and brothers. We en-courage all Catholics in western Washington to let their voices be heard as well. Please refer to the Washington State Catholic Conference’s (WSCC) action alert and add your voice to ours.
To our young friends who are fearful of deportation as a result of this decision by the Trump Administration, we want you to know that we are with you, that we pray for you, and that in the name of the Lord Jesus, we will do all we can to make the United States your permanent home.
Sincerely in Christ,
Most Rev. J. Peter Sartain Most Rev. Eusebio Elizondo, MSpS Most Rev. Daniel H. Mueggenborg
