September is Military Suicide Awareness Month. Make this an all year event not just this month. This isgrowing problem among our military and veterans. It exists all year, so we need to show our concern andhelp where we can constantly. Wear the Blue Tear Drop Sticker to show your support and awareness of tproblem. Stickers can be downloaded from www.ladiesauxiliaryvfw.org and printed on sticker-backedsheets.

Tips regarding how to use the ACE card. (ACE Suicide Prevention For Veterans and their families)Ask the veteran questions. This is the most difficult thing to do. So many feel they are imposing. DONT fke that, it is that emotion that could make a veteran feel unimportant.

Care for the veteran. Listening can be very beneficial.Escort the veteran. Encourage them to get help.Being there when a veteran needs to talk, listening, comforting or offering assistance can be the differencbetween depression and over coming life threatening emotions, with just your encouragement.

    POW-MIA

POW-MIA Recognition Day is September 21st. Work with your community for this honorable day. Usingthe Missing Man table is a great way to honor Veterans. Hold a Memorial Service and read the names ofthose lost, if available. Invite the community to participate in your Memorial Service. Family memberswould be honored to join your events, advertize your event in the newspapers and radio.

**Let the public know what the War Dogs have done for so many soldiers and still do today. One Memorial reads Americas Forgotten Heroes. In All the wars over the last 90 years men volunteere

to serve as dog handlers whether it was as a scout, sentry, mine, tunnel or tracker. The duty was lonely its best and extremely hazardous at its worst. They protected us on the field of battle. We are grateful.Hundreds of dogs were not allowed to come home while serving this country. Soldiers became attachedto the dogs so it was just as emotional for them to leave their canine comrade behind in war times. Visitwww.war-dogs.com to see the Memorials created.Stories will be collected from veterans this year to create a book for handout at convention. Pleas

submit War Dog Stories if you have one or know a veteran that does.

    Patriotic InstructorSeptember2012-2013

Your year is off to a great start as Patriotic Instructor. This month we will review more Flag Etiquette.

Materials are available at the VFW Supply Store to assist you in learning more about your tasks. Visitwww.vfw.org for ordering information. A wonderful tool that is available is the Understanding AuxiliaryTraditions. Make copies and handout to members. When a new member is accepted make sure she isgiven a Bylaw/Ritual Book and is aware of the opening ceremony and flag etiquette.

There is one word that describes our American Flag, and that word is Freedom. We do not live under that Nazi Swastika, the flag of the Rising Sun, not that Hammer and Sickle.

Because of American Veterans, we do live in this free country and we live under this Flag.Thank God, this is our Red, White and Blue; this is the Stars and Stripes we teach our young people to

    honor and respect.Major Boyd Fallwell

    Chaplain U.S. Army

Flag Etiquette Indoors and OutdoorsAs holidays and Patriotic events are starting to be created, we find more parades, flag postings in localowns, programs at schools and Veterans Day events being done. It is a great idea to make sure everyonemembers how flags should be displayed properly during these events.

Flag Etiquette IndoorsWhen displayed with a speaker's platform, flag must be above and behind the speaker. If mounted on a

staff, it is on the speaker's right.

When flags are being used during a meeting to escort guests, audience should be at attention.Flag escort should be preformed for Dignitaries

Flag Etiquette OutdoorsDo not carry the flag flat, or carry things in it.Flags should never be displayed on vehicles without a staffWhen marching with the American Flag it should be held higher then other flags.
