Steve Abrams,Boca’s former Mayor, says that it is “aninspiring story and wonderful cast of char-acters – but the star of the book, I ven-ture to say, is my beloved Boca Raton!”

The budget adopted amounted to$14,667,000 which represents theexcess of the projected expenses to beincurred over the revenues to be re-ceived. This represents a 3.5% increasein the total budget versus last year’s bud-get. As previously notified this produceda dues increase of $296 per Familymembership and $261 for a Singlemembership. Before you purchase that driver your friend is hitting so well; those irons you saw onT.V. last week; the fairway wood that promises a perfect shot every time, or thathybrid you think you need but are unsure of, you should ask yourself one question,

“How will I know if thisis the right club forme?”

When was the last timeyou played golf withsomeone who had theexact same swing as

you? Your answer is the same as everyoneelse reading this…”Never!” Each one ofus has our own unique swing.

Golf clubs do not break in. If they don’t fityou correctly, you break in. That is, youadapt your swing to the deficiencies in theclub. You change your swing to fit theclub when the club should be made to fityour swing. How do you make a club fityour swing? Get your clubs custom fit toyour swing. In a game where you needmaximum distance as well as distancecontrol, guessing isn’t good enough.

Nike Golf has revolutionized custom clubfitting. Nike has taken tour level fitting andmade it available to the everyday golferwith its 360 IFS (Intelligent Fitting System)software and fitting cart. The BrokenSound Club Course is the only course inSouth Eastern Florida to have Nike’s 360fitting system. The Nike 360 fittingsystem uses state of the art IFS software

coupled with a launch monitor to buildyou the perfect set.

Who doesn’t want to hit their driverfurther? Ever asked yourself which clubyou should use, the fairway wood or thehybrid? Not only will it build the driverthat will give you optimum launchconditions which in turn will result inadded yardage and accuracy; it will tellyou exactly which fairway woods, hybridsand irons you need to ensure you havea club for every distance (sorry, 300yards excluded). The best part, it onlytakes about an hour to be fit for an entireset, driver through wedge.

Technology has provided us with manyadvances in golf equipment. Today’sequipment is far more forgiving thanequipment made 20 years ago, but theaverage player is not playing better. Themajor reason for this is the averageplayer is playing with equipment that isnot fitted correctly to their needs.Custom fit golf clubs will give you theconfidence and enjoyment you have beenlooking for. I invite you to visit the GolfShop to learn more about this excitingopportunity.

Club Course MaintenanceWe hope you all enjoy the new seashorepaspalum tees this year as every tee top nowhas the new turf. Although they require a littlemore cultivation work, they stay green andstriped all year long. We will occasionallyverticut the tee tops to keep them from gettingtoo lush and developing disease with only aslight inconvenience now and then.

The new landscaping by the main driving rangewill be completed by the time this newslettergoes to print. So far we have heard a great dealof support for the entire design concept inbeautifying the practice area at the Club Course.

For the handicap players, we ask younot to cut across any ropes or signsaround the greens. To get to thedesignated parking markers around thegreens, please use the cart path to gopast the green and then up to themarkers. This will preserve the qualityof the turf and aesthetics around thegreens. All par 3s on both courses arelimited to the cart paths only with theexception of #12 at the Old Course forhandicap players only.

As I write this article we are still in aPhase II drought restriction but talk isunderway by the South Florida WaterManagement District to easeregulations of water on golf courses, ofwhich, we are heavily regulated andmonitored weekly with monthly caps.

We anticipate abusy and successfulseason of golfing andpresenting wonderfulgolf courses for yourplaying pleasure.

As for some “housekeeping” notes: Ropes will start to goback up around both courses, along withtraffic control signs – this is really theonly way to control traffic for the amountof play we have. The ninety (90) degreerule will be in effect the entire year. Makeyour runs parallel in the rough to yourball and then make a straight line to it inthe fairway. We would appreciate whenyou reach the approach ropes/balls orgreen & white stakes that you never driveacross them as a shortcut but exit tothe cart path and park your carts in thedesignated areas (concrete path or

Old Betsy, manufactured in Elmira, NewYork, in 1924 was at the t imeconsidered state-of-the-art firefightingequipment. Along with her water pumpingcapabilities, Old Betsy was equipped witha chemical system, hose carrier, hardsuction hose and lanterns on the rearpost.

It’s all in the details! When planning a party of any size, people generally tend to think that the ‘extras’ arethe things that make the price go up. That is absolutely TRUE! But details are whatmake a party memorable. Cost effective methods are always at our fingertips

that allow us to embellish what we alreadyhave nailed down. Keep in mind that thefirst news of a party is what creates hype, and therefore your invitation shouldgive a small hint of things to come. Away to save is ordering your invitationsonl ine from websites such aswww.paperdirect.com where you can findgreat deals as well as a downloadabletemplate that will make the printing quiteeasy. Adding a printed personalizedmailing label (easily printable at home inMicrosoft Word with labels purchased atany off ice supply store) and / orpersonalized stamps (avai lable atusps.com) will not go unnoticed either.Same is applicable for place cards, menus, programs, etc.

Details are especially important when itcomes to the look of the venue. As wellas specialty linens, rental chargers areoften crucial to a sharp, fresh lookdepending on the location; in facilities suchas Broken Sound there is very little thatneeds to be done due to exquisitelydecorated rooms. A simple touch such

as monochromatic cotton napkin in a colorthat suits your theme (available at nocharge) with an interesting fold, assortedcandies and nuts displayed in martiniglasses, votive candles displayed aroundthe table or a cute favor might be justthe extra touch that you need.

But remember, the party needs to endwith a high note. Consider investing in aspecialty cake or pastries that our pastrychefs can make into shapes and sizesthat suit your needs, taste and theme. That final touch will ensure that your guestswill be talking about your party for weeks, months and years to come.

Please let us know if you need theprofessional opinion of our cateringexperts regarding an event that you’replanning at Broken Sound or somewhereelse. Stay tuned for the next issue as wewill reveal some tips and tricks of thetrade.

Celebrity fitness trainer, “Beto” Perez, stumbled upon the concept ofLatin inspired fitness in his native country of Colombia ( South

America ) in the mid 1990’s. One day, he walked intohis class and realized that he had forgotten hisaerobics music, and his only option was to grabwhatever tapes he had in his car. Beto’s tapes werecomprised of the songs that he loved, the traditionalLatin salsa and merengue music with which he hadbeen raised. But it was a challenge to improvise awhole class on the spot using non-traditional aerobics

music. Beto rose to the challenge and from thislast-minute improvisation was born arevolutionary fitness program Zumba® Fitness!

Although Dr. Ehrlich coped with his pain, his biggest complaint with his conditionwas the numbness in his ankles and thepain in his back. After receiving monthsof physical therapy, he felt that he hadnot fully reached the quality of life heanticipated and thought surgery was hisonly option.

While on the golf course, a memberrecommended having a massage with“Ronald.” Dr Ehrlich had never receiveda massage before and was a “hostilewitness.” “I didn’t believe there was

anything Ronald could do for me.”Reluctantly, Dr Ehrlich received his firstmassage which was a l i tt leuncomfortable, but later that sameafternoon Dr Ehrlich felt much morelimber. The next week after Dr Ehrlich’ssecond massage with Ronald, thenumbness in his ankles had gone! Nowwhen Dr Ehrlich receives his massages,he is pain free! Dr Ehrlich continuedseeing Ronald every week for a year andstill does “quarterly maintenance check.”“He gave me back my life”. Before seeingRonald on a regular basis, Dr Ehrlichcould only manage 4 minutes on thetreadmill. Now Dr Ehrlich visits thefitness center regularly and can jog for30 minutes. “After Ronald gave me backmy life, I recommended him to otherson a daily basis.” Dr Ehrlich currentlyenjoys coaching both his grandsons’soccer teams, especially considering thathe can now jog along with his grandsonsand their teams.

Three yearsago, she began personal training withJerry Parrish in order to build up herstrength and her flexibility. She also wasdiagnosed with osteoporosis, which Mrs.Donath was concerned about, so shewanted to emphasize building up her bonedensity. She was also concerned aboutstarting any training program since shehas stenosis of her lumbar spine andarthritis in her neck. Mrs. Donath ishappy to report that since she has beentraining with Jerry, her strength andflexibility have improved immensely.

During her recent Doctor’s visit, her testresults showed that her bone density hasincreased because of her weight training. As a result of her exercise regimen withJerry she has not needed to takemedication for her osteoporosis for overa year. She feels that Jerry has helpedreshape her body, increase hermetabolism and improve her flexibility. She no longer needs to take an epiduralfor her stenosis and feels stronger andhealthier than ever. Jerry consistentlywatches her form to make sure that shedoesn’t break down in her mechanics. He has nicknamed her “Tiger”, as areference to her strength and tenacityduring her training. When asked for finalcomments, Mrs. Donath stated, “I don’tever intend to stop training. My goal isto be the best that I can be!”

As summer draws to a close, we are about to start another season of fundraising formoney so needed for cancer research. We have been busy all summer planning greatactivities for you to enjoy and for us to reach our goal in finding a cure.

We open our season with our paid up membership tea on Monday, November 10th atthe beautiful home of Debby Singerman.

Our Annual Walkathon will take place on Sunday, December 14. Round up the children, gather family and friends and let’s walk together for the cure. We start at 8:30AM withwarm up exercises led by our own Al Salkeld. We then walk around the community andreturn to the clubhouse for a delectable brunch, and a silent auction. Each year moreand more people join the fun, and we hope you will be one of them.

Save Thursday, January 29, 2008 for our winter card party. We will have several newand interesting vendors, along with raffle prizes.

Boca Friends is one of 47 units in South Florida working to raise funds for cancerresearch. Last year our efforts alone, resulted in giving to the Pap Corp. $120,000toward this goal. At our annual luncheon in May, the Pap Corp. gave to Miami SylvesterComprehensive Cancer Center a check for $4.15 million. We could not have accomplishedthis without your support.

Many people don’t know that Boca Friends does much more than fundraising. We havea referral service that helps people in the community connect with specialists at Sylvestershould the need arise. A call to Barbara Pessel at 736-7772, Arnie Spevak at 241-6417, Robin Schumer at 995-2408 or Roberta Oberman at 740-3003 will get youthe prompt help that you need.

Cancer does not discriminate. There isn’t a family that has not been touched. Let’s worktogether to eliminate this dread disease.
