Welcome to the Breck Film Fest! The Town of Breckenridge is honored to host the BFF within our community, especially in the growing Arts District, iconic BGV Community Center, Summit County South Branch Library, and Speakeasy Theater.

Breckenridge is a great place to visit and an even better place to live. We are a small community that offers world-class recreation, a thriving arts community, great shopping and a vibrant restaurant scene, while providing a safe, friendly, and fun community for our citizens to live, work, play, and raise a family.

Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, Breckenridge has one of the largest historic districts in Colorado. Located in the heart of town is a thriving arts campus bookended by the Riverwalk Center and the newly expanded Breckenridge Theater. You can take a class, see a show or meet an artist-in-residence.

From the development of the Arts District and the Riverwalk Center to public art initiatives, Breckenridge has worked hard to make itself a place where the arts can thrive. Starting in 1981, the Breckenridge Film Festival is one of the oldest running film festivals in the country, emphasizing how a town can grow into a cultural community with the help of its passionate citizens.

While enjoying all the art that our community has to offer, don’t forget about your surroundings. Our location to the mountains, vast and well-maintained trail system, and our ski resort make Breckenridge a premier recreational spot. As the aspen leaves begin to turn in the fall, you can explore Breckenridge’s miles of open space and trail system. Run, hike, or bike your way through the yellow leaves that thousands come to see each fall.

While the scenery and offerings of Breckenridge are remarkable, they are nothing without our people. Passionate and driven, the citizens - from the longtime local to the seasonal second home owner - make Breckenridge what it is. They are active outdoor enthusiasts and give of themselves as docents, board members and volunteers.

I hope you will enjoy our slice of heaven, and thank you for supporting the Breck Film Fest! Eric MamulaMayor of Breckenridge

Welcome

Welcome! This fall marks the Festival’s 39th year and will feature over 100 films selected from the hundreds submitted from around the world.

This year’s selections include compelling documentaries, mystery thrillers, a great Adventure

Reel, some special screenings with special guests and something for just about everyone who loves film. Dozens of filmmakers will be attending and looking forward to presenting their works and interacting with attendees.

Screenings will be offered at venues throughout the historic and bustling Town of Breckenridge that has embarked on a major cultural arts effort. The Town has made significant investments in arts facilities and programming the last several years and recently was ranked as the #1 small community in the USA on the Arts Vibrancy Index. The Breckenridge Film Festival is proud to be a partner in this arts renaissance.

Thank you for supporting the Breckenridge Film Festival. Enjoy the fall colors and please take some time to visit the numerous fine shops, restaurants and galleries throughout Breckenridge.

Gary MartinezPresident of the Breck Film Fest Board

“Stories can accomplish what no other form of communication can – they can get through to our hearts with a message. In our world of information transfer, data exchange, and media impressions, where we have become callused by so much communication, stories have the ability to speak to us about what truly matters.”

~ William Roper, Orton Family Foundation

It’s always a wonderful weekend in Breckenridge when film-lovers, filmmakers and industry guests descend upon this authentic mountain town just in time for the cool, crisp autumn air and the fall colors.

Welcome! We are excited to have you with us for our 39th year. Join us as we welcome more than 45 filmmakers who represent roughly half of the films we’ll screen this weekend. And join me in thanking the sponsors, grantors and individual donors who make this annual festival and our year-round program possible.

This year is special because we are about to celebrate our 40th year. With it comes new staff, new thoughts about the future, and new partnerships – such as our partnership with Keystone Science School to support Girls in STEM, our work with Summit High School teacher Paul Koslovsky, all the professional filmmakers who make this festival so special and our year-round programming that leads up to this fall event. We are growing and changing and excited to move into the future.

Inspire. Educate. Entertain.

You’ll see these words throughout our festival. Together, they serve as the guiding principles that have governed our festival in the past, present and into the future. Stories have the power to accomplish all three.

Our mission is to present compelling and interactive film experiences built upon these stories, to enrich the lives of our citizens, visitors and filmmakers. We are proud to do it in our authentic mountain town. From screenings with question-and-answer periods, to talkback forums, to workshops, and even to parties – and everything in between – we hope you’ll enjoy your time here. We encourage you to take away not only a piece of Breckenridge, but a piece of the world as you experience it through the power of the camera lens.

Join us in this communal viewing experience. Absorb all that we have to offer. Take part in our talkback forums and engage with one another at the parties. Catch the incredibly impactful High School Program, where young, aspiring filmmakers receive mentoring input from attending film professionals. Please don’t miss the fun - and free! activities, booths and artist exhibits throughout the festival!

We are inspired by our 2019 lineup, and hope you will be too!

(following the films The Last Prayer and Generation Columbine, p. 42)Panel Discussion with the Director of Generation Columbine - Matt McDonough; a Building Hope representative, and other area mental health professionals and those affected by the Columbine shooting.

Rising gun violence is becoming an unfortunate reality in the world today. Thoughts and prayers alone cannot solve this pivotal issue that plagues our society. How does a filmmaker crafting the perspective of a female character get it ‘right’? Our filmmakers discuss the role of females in their respective films and how they expertly crafted each one’s narrative.

Sun Sept 22 | FREE SPECIAL PROGRAMMING

12:30 pm | Block of Short Films | BRECKENRIDGE THEATER | 121 S. Ridge St.‘Keystone Science School Girls in STEM’ Sponsored by SUMMIT FORD

See young filmmakers in action! After a weekend of work with professional and student mentors attending the Breck Film Fest, students participating in the Girls in STEM program will showcase their stop-motion animation films.

For more than 5 years, Keystone Science School has engaged young women within science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) career paths through its Girls in STEM programs. Each program explores a STEM subject and encourages participants to learn from female professionals serving as STEM Mentors about career paths within a specific content area.

The partnership with the Breck Film Fest exposes participants to careers within the film industry from filmmakers attending festival weekend from across the nation and globe. These filmmakers guide students in the making of their own short film while learning about

careers that make up the film industry, with a special focus on direction, production, cinematography and editing, as these are the hands-on skills the girls practice during the weekend. This program explores the importance of women within the film industry and showcases the girls’ short films.

WHY FOSTER FEMALES IN THE FILM INDUSTRY? “Film is a magical medium allowing artists to tell stories that transport the audience from their seats to new places. Through the lens of cinema, one can sneak through the halls of Asgard or Pod Race over the sands of Tatooine. Stories told on screens both big and small have a major influence on our very perception of the world.

“Movies often stir up feelings, unlock new thoughts, encourage conversation, and sometimes even inspire action. Women’s voices are often underrepresented in the male-dominated film industry. It’s so important to have diverse voices, including women’s voices, contribute to filmmaking and creative storytelling. Their inclusion highlights new viewpoints and fosters the creation of new, unique stories.

“When films allow us to have the entire universe at our fingertips, why limit the scope of our view? Films are an incredibly collaborative piece of art. Sometimes it takes hundreds of people coming together to make them. I’ve been so fortunate at Disney Animation to have opportunities to give story notes on in-progress screenings of our films to bring my own unique viewpoint to our films. Working on a movie sometimes truly does feel like making magic.”
