    CHAPTER 7

    SENTRY REMOVAL

Careful planning rehearsal, and execution are vital to the success of amission that requires the removal of a sentry. This task may be necessary to gainaccess to an enemy location or to escape confinement.

7-1. PLANN ING CON SIDERATIONSA d etailed schematic of the layout of the area guard ed by sentries mu st be available.Mark known and susp ected locations of all sentries. It will be necessary

    a. To learn the schedu le for the changing of the guard s and the checkingof the posts.

    b. To learn the gu ard s meal times. It may be best to attack a sentry soonafter he has eaten when his guard is lowered . Another good time to attackthe sentry is when he is going to the latrine.

    c. To post continuous security.

    d. To develop a contingency plan.

    e. To plan infiltration and exfiltration routes.f. To carefully select personnel to accomplish the task.

    g. To carry the least equip ment n ecessary to accomp lish th e missionbecause silence, stealth, and ease of movement ar e essential.

    h. To conceal or dispose of killed sentries.

7-2. REHEARSALSReprodu ce and reh earse the scenario of the m ission as closely as possible tothe execution p hase. Condu ct the rehearsal on similar terrain, using sentries, the time schedule, and the contingency plan. Use all possible infiltration andexfiltration rou tes to determ ine wh ich m ay be the best.

7-3. EXECUTI O NWhen rem oving a sentry, the soldier uses his stalking skills to app roach theenemy u nd etected. He must u se all available concealmen t and keep h issilhouette as low as p ossible.

    a. When stepping, the soldier p laces the ball of his lead foot d own firstand checks for stability and silence of the su rface to be crossed. He thenlightly tou ches the heel of his lead foot. Next, he tran sfers his bod y w eight tohis lead foot by shifting his body forward in a relaxed m anner. With the weight

on the lead foot, he can bring his rear foot forw ard in a similar ma nner.b. When approaching the sentry, the soldier synchronizes his steps and

movement with the enemys, masking an y sound s. He also uses backgroundnoises to mask his sounds. He can even follow the sentry through lockeddoors this way. He is always ready to strike imm ediately if he is discovered .He focuses his attention on th e sentrys head since that is wh ere the sentrygenerates all of his movement an d atten tion. How ever, it is importan t not tostare at the enemy because he may sense the stalkers presence through asixth sense. He focuses on the sentrys movements with his peripheral vision. He gets to within 3 or 4 feet and at the proper moment makes the kill asquickly and silently as possible.

    c. The attackers primary focus is to summon all of his mental and physicalpow er to sud den ly explode onto the target. He maintains an attitud e ofcomplete confidence throughout the execution. He must control fear andhesitation because one instant of hesitation could cause his defeat andcompromise the entire mission.

7-4. PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTSKilling a sentry is completely different than killing an enemy soldier whileengaged in a firefight. It is a cold and calculated attack on a specific target. After observing a sentry for hour s, wa tching him eat or look at his wifes photo,an attachment is made between the stalker and the sentry. Nonetheless, thestalker mu st accomp lish h is task efficiently and bru tally. At such closequarters, the soldier literally feels the sentry fight for his life. The sights, sound s, and smells of this act are imp rinted in the soldiers mind ; it is anintensely personal experience. A soldier who has removed a sentry should beobserved for signs of unu sual behavior for four to seven d ays after the act.

7-5. TECH N IQ UESThe following techniques are proven and effective ways to remove sentries.A soldier with moderate training can execute the p roper technique for hissituation, wh en he needs to.

    a. Brachial Stun , Throat Cu t. This technique relies on complete mentalstunning to enable the soldier to cut th e sentrys throat, severing the tracheaand carotid arteries. Death results within 5 to 20 seconds. Some sounds areemitted from the exposed tra chea, bu t the throat can be cut before the sentrycan recover from the effect of the stunning strike and cry out. The soldier

silently ap proaches to within striking ran ge of the sentry (Figure 7-1, Step 1).The soldier strikes the side of the sentrys neck with the knife butt or a h amm er

fist strike (Figure 7-1, Step 2), which completely stuns the sentry for three toseven seconds. He then uses his body weight to direct the sentrys body to

sink in one direction and uses his other hand to tw ist the sentrys head to theside, deeply cutting the th roat across the front in th e opp osite direction(Figure 7-1, Step 3). He executes the entire length of the blade in a slicingmotion. The sentrys sinking body provides most of the forcenot thesoldiers u pp er-arm strength (Figure 7-1, Step 4).

    b. Kidney Stab, Throat Cut. This techniqu e relies on a stab to the kid ney(Figure 7-2, Step 1) to induce immediate shock. The kidney is relativelyaccessible and by indu cing shock with such a stab, the soldier has the time to

cut the sentrys throat. The soldier completes his stalk and stabs the kidney

by pu lling the sentrys balance backward an d downward and inserts the knifeup ward against his weight. The sentry will possibly gasp at th is point, butshock immediately follows. By u sing the sentrys body w eight that is fallingdownward and turning, the soldier executes a cut across the front of the throat

(Figure 7-2, Step 2). This completely severs th e trachea and carotid ar teries.

    c. Pectoral Mu scle Strike, Throat Cu t. The stun in th is techn ique isproduced by a vigorous strike to the stellate ganglia nerve center at the top

of the p ectoral mu scle (Figure 7-3, Step 1). The str ike is delivered dow nw ardwith the attackers body weight. Use the h and le of the knife for imp act. Care

should be taken to avoid any equ ipment worn by the sentry that could obstructthe strike. Do not try this technique if the sentry is w earing a ballistic vest orbu lky LCE. The sentry is unab le to make a soun d or m ove if the stun isproperly delivered. The throat is then cut with a vertical stab downward into thesubclavian ar tery a t the junction of the neck and clavicle (Figure 7-3, Step 2).Death comes within 3 to 10 second s, and the sentry is lowered to the groun d.

    d. Nose Pinch, Mouth Grab,Throat Cut. In this technique, comp letely p inch off the sen trysmouth and n ose to prevent any outcry.

Then cut his throat or stab hissubclavian artery (Figure 7-4). Thedanger with this technique is that thesentry can resist un til he is killed, although he cannot make a sound .

    e. Crush Larynx, SubclavianArtery Stab. Crush the sentrys larynxby inserting the thumb and two orthree fingers behind his larynx, thentwisting and crushing it. The

subclavian artery can be stabbed at thesame time with the other hand(Figure 7-5).

    f. Belgian Takedown. In the Belgian take down technique, the unsuspect-ing sentry is knocked to the grou nd and kicked in the groin, inducing shock. The soldier can then kill the sentry by any p roper means. Since surprise isthe essential element of this technique, the soldier must use effective stalking

techniques (Figure 7-6, Step 1). To initiate his attack, he grabs both of thesentrys ank les (Figure 7-6, Step 2). Then he heaves h is body weight into th ehips of the sentry while pulling up on the ankles. This technique slams thesentry to th e groun d on his face. Then, the soldier follows w ith a kick to thegroin

    -(Figure 7-6, Step 3).

    g. Neck Break With Sentry Helmet. The soldier can break the sentrysneck by vigorously snatching back and d ow n on th e sentrys helmet(Figure 7-7, Step 1) while forcing the sentrys body w eight forward w ith a kneestrike (Figure 7-7, Step 2). The chin strap of the helmet m ust be fastened for

    this technique to work.

    h. Knockout With Helmet. The sentrys helmet is stripp ed from h is headand used by the soldier to knock h im ou t (Figure 7-8, Step 1). The sold ier

uses his free hand to stabilize the sentry du ring the attack. This techniquecan only be used when the sentrys chin strap is loose. The preferred targetarea for striking with the helmet is at the base of the skull or on the temple(Figu re 7-8, Step 2).

    i. The G arrote. In this techn ique, use a length of wire, cord , rope, orwebbed belt to takeout a sentry. Silence is not gu aranteed , but the techniqueis effective if the soldier is unarmed and must escape from a guarded area.

The soldier carefully stalks the sentry from behind with his garrote ready

(Figure 7-9, Step 1). He loops th e garrote over the sentrys head across thethroat (Figure 7-9, Step 2) and forcefully pulls him backward as he turns hisown body to place his hips in low against the hips of the sentry. The sentrysbalance is already taken at th is point, and the garrote becomes crossed aroun dthe sentrys throat when the turn is made. The sentry is thrown over thesoldiers shoulder and killed by strangling or breaking his neck (Figure 7-9,Step 3).
