Tasmania produces some of Australia’s best food, and its beef and dairy exports are no exception. The Tasmanian brand is internationally recognised as a mark of premium quality, supporting strong growth in the State’s world renowned beef and dairy industries. The Sense-T Pasture Predictor is a new on- line tool which aims to support productivity, efficiency and continuing growth in this important industry. By providing 30-day forecasts for the growth of pasture, the predictor helps farmers to make better decisions in managing their herds, production and costs. Forecasts for seven locations across the State’s main beef and dairy areas in the far North West, North West, central North, North East, northern Midlands and Derwent Valley can be found at www.sense-t.org.au. Sense-T Pasture Predictor How it works The Pasture Predictor’s forecasts are based on a range of data, including current weather conditions and forecasts, rainfall events, past climate records, and real-time soil moisture. Initially the 30-day forecasts will be updated fortnightly but by the end of 2015 they will be further improved to update continually, based on real time streaming of data. This combination of different data sets and simple on-line presentation makes the Sense-T Pasture Predictor more accurate and easier to use than those previously available, and with further work the model could be extended across Australia. How it came about The Pasture Predictor was developed and tested as part of Sense-T’s Beef and Dairy project, a jointly funded partnership between the Tasmanian Government, the University of Tasmania and CSIRO. The scope of the work was determined through consultation with farmers, who identified pasture prediction as one of the key ways that Sense-T could use sensors and data analysis to boost their farms’ productivity, efficiency and sustainability. The Beef and Dairy research was carried out by Project Leads Richard Rawnsley from the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture and Dave Henry from the CSIRO, in collaboration with DairyTas, the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA), and dairy and beef farmers. As well as pasture prediction, the project also researched the use of on-animal sensors and data analysis to identify when cows were in oestrus, and to monitor cow grazing behaviour.

Stage 1 ProjectsSense-T’s four Stage 1 Projects were carried out between July 2012 and March 2015. Using sensors and data analysis, researchers from the University of Tasmania and CSIRO joined industry partners to develop solutions and new ways of working in agriculture and aquaculture. Funding was provided by the Australian and Tasmanian governments, the University of Tasmania, CSIRO, and industry partners.

Sense-T consulted widely with farmers, industry and government to identify the problems and challenges they wanted to address. This ‘participatory design’ approach ensured that the research was relevant and would deliver practical outcomes. The major achievements of Stage 1 include:

• an online pasture growth prediction tool, which tells farmers how much their pasture will grow in the coming weeks;

• helping irrigators in the Ringarooma and South Esk river catchments to better manage their water use, benefitting farmers, regulators and the environment;

• giving regulators and producers real time data about environmental conditions around shellfish farms; and

• developing tools to help vineyards avoid disease and make better management decisions.

Stage 2 ProjectsNew Sense-T Stage 2 Projects will commence in April 2015, with work in health, tourism, and infrastructure, freight and logistics added to our ongoing agricultural research. These Industry Research Projects are funded by the Australian Government through the Tasmanian Jobs and Growth Plan and will share funding of up to $6 million to develop practical solutions to industry challenges across Tasmania.

Stage 2 will also include ongoing work through:

• Pathways to Market, which is working with Tasmanian producers to improve food distribution and consumer information; and

• the Sense-T NICTA Logistics Lab, which is working with industry to identify ways of improving efficiency and productivity in transport logistics and freight.
