Most people imagineretirement to be a time toslow down and relax, but

that’s not how it worked out for Phil and Christine Mathers, of Taroona.

The couple, now certified seniors, are as active as ever, if not more so. The proactive pair believe the best way to stay happy and healthy through their senior years is to stay fit, active, busy and be surrounded by friends and family.

Christine, a former childcare worker at Taroona’s Possums Playcentre, said: “The key is to start retirement planning well before you leave work. You need a good financial plan and to think about what you want to do, including new objectives.”

For the Mathers, that included planning long-term projects and ongoing hobbies. “We renovated our house to start with, which was a

great exercise and very rewarding,” Christine said.

She also took up golf as a hobby, finding it a good way to meet people and learn new skills.

“I’d say most of the time I enjoymy golf,” she said. And while her game doesn’t always go to plan: “I always enjoy the four-hour walk in the fresh air!”

Another passion Christine enjoysis singing in a choir with a group of about 24 singers, who have become like one big happy family. She has also done Zumba with a friend on Saturday mornings for more than 10 years now.

The retiree said she and Phil alsoboth loved working around their garden together, growing fruit, vegies and flowers.

“We also do a lot of walking andcycling when there’s time,” she said.

In addition to keeping fit, Phil, a

former engineer with Hydro Tasmania, has made a conscious effort to keep his brain active in retirement. “Since retirement I actually did part-time consultancy work for about six years and I’ve written a couple of papers for the Institution of Engineers’ Heritage Group,” he said.

Some of his day-to-day activitiesinclude golf, a weekly exercise program for seniors, helping his neighbours and walking both locally and along his favourite tracks on Mt Wellington and beyond.

The couple both enjoy the Taroona foreshore and swim regularly in the summer, sometimes with their 86-year-old neighbour.

In retirement, the Mathers havetravelled to many destinations, including China, Cambodia, Norway, Hawaii, Canada, New Zealand and the east coast of the US, as well as

trips to mainland Australia, including several four-wheel-driving camping trips.

The couple has also found moretime for friends and family.

“Christine plays an important rolewith the grandkids, especially in their first four to five years where we can really help our kids out with their children,” Phil said.

“With our children moving into their own homes, I can help them with some of their projects.”

It is often said that in the workplace, happiness boosts productivity, but in retirement – particularly with the Mathers — it seems the opposite is true. Happier and busier than ever, they are the perfect example of how being productive equals contentment. Makes you wonder how they ever found time to fit work into their schedules. Words: Patrick Gee

THE Catholic Archdiocese of Hobart improves the lives of thousands of people across Tasmania every day through the good works of its organisations.

Catholic Church agencies operatewith a distinctive culture of care, inspired by the example of Jesus Christ, and guided by the church’s teachings.

Exponential growth in delivery ofservices has occurred in recent years, spurred on by the decision of governments to entrust the provision of social programs and services to Tasmanian Catholic agencies. The involvement of the church in these areas is done out of a fundamental concern for the poor, marginalised, and those at risk in the community.

The church seeks to offer not

delivery of programs and services to Tasmanians, and bequestors are invited to join the Archdiocesan recognition program named in honour of Bishop Robert Willson.

The church teaches that every human being is precious, and that people are more important than material possessions. This gives the Catholic Church and its agencies a

IN AUSTRALIA we can expect from 50-80 per cent of nursing home residents to have dementia. This is certainly the case for Masonic Care Tasmania, which was successful in a recent Improving Dementia Care proposal to the Masonic Centenary Medical Research Foundation.

The new $250,000 Improving Dementia Care Program is a collaboration between Masonic Care Tasmania, Masonic Centenary Medical Research Foundation and the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre. It will build on the not-for-profit organisations’ expertise in managing challenging behaviours in dementia care, further developing excellence in care, and looking at ways to model

new roles for graduates of the Bachelor of Dementia Care from the University of Tasmania.

The project will run over two years across three Masonic Care Tasmania aged-care sites, including two dementia specific units, and will explore how Bachelor of Dementia Care graduate Kim Page can shape a new model of dementia care in aged-care practice.

One exciting aspect will be the implementation of cutting-edge technology through a Nao robot set to transform engagement with residents. Its name is Elroy, and the dementia therapy robot will be usedto entertain and encourage social interaction. He will help bring residents out of their shells and

Focus on innovationTechnology boosts quality of life for dementia care

dispel any notion that age and cognitive impairment are a barrier to embracing technology to enhance quality of life.

With programming support fromstaff, Elroy will run music groups, exercise classes and a games hour, where residents will be encouraged to socialise. The robot uses Zora software, developed in Europe and specially designed for aged care.

He can move, feel, hear, speak, see, connect and think, giving him a friendly, playful, patient and active personality.

Elroy has been designed to complement and improve quality of care, not replace staff. Importantly,

the robot is intended to be personalised. Staff will be able to add content to enrich his personality and help him develop new skills and know-how.

We can’t wait to see how this new form of therapy will enhance the wellbeing of those living with dementia in Masonic Care Tasmania’s Homes.

New dementia unitIn other news, Masonic Care Tasmania’s new Balfour Wing at Peace Haven in Launceston opened with great success recently. This secure contemporary dementia unit accommodates 16 residents.

Care resident Margaret (left) meets Elroy the therapy robot for the first time.

campaigner David Cawthorn, an Access Consultant, chair of Paraquad Tas and a member of the Premier’s Disability Advisory Council, has been campaigning for.

“It’s called future-proofing,” he said. “Homes built now should have features that can be adapted as people get older or become disabled, rather than traditional homes where it costs a fortune to try and adapt. We commend this company for its vision and drive to create a modern home that is attractive as well as functional.”

The cost to the homeowner of including key livable housing design features is 22 times more efficient than retro-fitting when an unplanned need arises. Sharon says it will cater for all stages of life.

“It gives the owner the option tostay forever and not have to go to a retirement home or care facility,” she said.

Public open days will be held in the coming months. The display home is in the new subdivision that was formerly K&D Brickworks and is now called Garrington Park.

MEMBERS of the disability community, and local, state and federal government representatives were recently invited to New Town to view the frame stage of what is set to become a game-changer in the housing construction market.

Local builders Sharon and PeterOverton from Lifetime Homes are building Tasmania’s first universal access display home – specifically designed for easy living for people with disabilities or those planning their retirement.

“We believe homes should be built above the minimum standard and be suitable for all ages and abilities,” said Peter, a builder with more than 20 years’ experience.

“It is why we have designed thishome, that we call the Lifetime SmartHome, to the platinum level of the Livable Housing Design Guidelines. We are the only builders in the state to build a display home to this standard.” And with Tasmania having one quarter of the state’s population living with disability — the highest in the

country — demand is sure to be high. The SmartHome has more than

30 accessible features — for those with a disability now, as well as built-in features that can be activated if needed at a later time.

Some of these features includewider doors and hallways,

reinforcement of bathroom and toilet walls for grabrails to be fitted, kitchen design and finishing, switches and power points, door and tap hardware, and assistive technology voice and touch controls to operate equipment and fittings.

With more than 100 residents already enjoying the lifestyle within the village, we have created a

Services such as physiotherapy, podiatry, massage and hairdressing are on site regularly for added

Fresh lease on lifeTHE popular annual Tasmanian Seniors Week activities program, held from October 16-22, features an overarching “outdoors” theme this year, where participants are encouraged to attend events across Tasmania’s abundant parks and reserves.

Seniors Week organiser, Councilon the Ageing (COTA) Tasmania, has collaborated with the state’s

Out and aboutFind the ‘great’ in the outdoors

Parks and Wildlife Service to encourage the development of new outdoor events to be held during Seniors Week. The collaboration formally commenced with a large official launch event at the popular Mt Field National Park near Hobart on October 2.

Specially chartered busloads ofpatrons enjoyed the varied activities offered on the day, including storytelling, discovery tours, guided walks to the famous Russell Falls, information sessions, poetry and music from Gina Mercer and flautist Lynne Griffiths, and a special concert by nationally acclaimed Aboriginal entertainer, Dewayne Everettsmith, supported

by Uncle Dougie Mansell.“Tasmania has an abundance of

stunning, world-class parks and reserves, with many just a few minutes from major population areas,” says COTA CEO Sue Leitch.

“We have learned that many Tasmanians aren’t aware just how easily accessible and ‘senior friendly’ many of our parks and reserves are.

“Our research identified an appetite among patrons for more outdoor, gentle leisure options during Seniors Week.

“So we are very pleased to say that there a number of these types of events in our 2017 Seniors Week program.”

However, while getting outdoorsis a special focus, the statewide Seniors Week program again provides a wide variety of events, ranging from light exercise and sports to music and singalongs and from creative arts and tours to “how-to” information sessions. The 96-page official events guide details all events by region and alphabetical suburb/town order and again features the popular Daily Planner section.

The Seniors Week Events Guideis available from LINCs, libraries, Service Tasmania shops, Community Health Centres, Australia Post shops and selected pharmacies.

Village life calls

THEY say it takes a village toraise a child, and this is a keyconcept being increasingly

adopted by aged-care facilities, reflecting the vital role of the community and the importance of maintaining social connections as we age. As we grow old, so does our need to connect with, and contribute to, the world around us.

Connecting people in the community with aged-care residents is vital for maintaining our social connections. Regular interactions between the generations is a part of engaging with the community as we deliver an effective Leisure and Lifestyle program for residents at our five facilities. Leisure and Lifestyle

staff, in conjunction with nurses and carers, plan and supervise a weekly program of activities for residents where participation with younger people is encouraged.

OneCare’s residential facility in Glenorchy, Barossa Park Lodge, enjoys an effective partnership with their younger neighbours, The Tiny Tackers Childrens Centre, as well as students from nearby Springfield Gardens Primary School, who visit frequently.

Such groups of children participating at the facility are not only important for developing the social connections of our residents, the children also thrive when they have the opportunity to learn from, and share with, others.

Kids keep residents young

Their ongoing participation canalso play an integral role in a child’s learning and social development.

The children are able to developand enhance their communication

skills through regular contact with older generations, while also learning to co-operate and interact with others.

Senior’s Week Open Days at OneCare.

COURTBISHOP DAVIES

LODGEBAROSSA PARK

Open days at OneCare:

Sue Graves, the clinical care manager at Barossa Park Lodge, is a long-term contributor at OneCare and has more than 20 years of service in the aged-care sector. For her, the numerous benefits for residents in aged-care facilities are evidenced when connecting with children in their community.

While some residents have theability to interact through visiting family and friends to maintain their social connections, Sue says “combining the two groups has allowed residents who may not have grandchildren close by to interact with the younger generation; equally, children who may not have grandparents nearby form friendships with the residents”.

Encouraging resident participation in shared activities such as reading and singing creates a common ground between the residents and young people as we

A simple conversation allows fortrust to be developed and real connections can therefore be made, both of which are essential for building friendships between people of any age.

For our residents it provides purpose and meaningfulness, with particular benefits to the elderly.

The positive outcomes for residents living with dementia are particularly significant, with the ability to recall memories through music-based activity and the simple presence of the children.

Learning from our younger agegroups can be an uplifting experience for residents as they are positively engaged and stimulated. We encourage local children’s groups and aged-care facilities to develop strong community links in a mutually beneficial partnership.

COMMUNITY interest has been exceptionally strong this year for the above-ground garden crypts at Cornelian Bay Cemetery.

As a result, only one crypt is nowavailable. Management at Millingtons Cemeteries are in discussions regarding future developments. We are seeking interest from the community to determine the need to expand on our existing garden crypt site. An additional expansion has the capacity to increase availability of up to an extra 32 to 64 crypts.

within the cemetery grounds at Cornelian Bay have created additional double-depth burial sites for full monumental and limited monumental memorials for purchase. Site numbers are limited, so you are encouraged to express your interest at your earliest convenience.

TRAVEL author Ann Rickardgives us her top 10 reasons tolove the south of France in

summer, a place she returns to year after year.

The climate: The south has 300 days of sunshine a year, with average summer temps in the high

20s and early 30s. You would have to be unlucky to visit in summer and not be bathed in sunshine.

The language: Is there another language that sounds so gorgeous? You’ll enjoy being surrounded by its lyricism. Within a day of a visit you’ll be chorusing “bonjour” and “merci”

to everyone you encounter.

The countryside: Yellow sunflowers at every turn, leafy plane trees lining back roads, mauve fields of lavender shimmering, red poppies dancing on the roadside and endless rows of lush grapevines . . . Happiness everywhere and

reassurance you are in the south of France.

The wine: It’s very good and cheap. Supermarket shelves are stacked with wines with labels that bring to mind regions you have only dreamt about. We love buying wine from the co-operatives in the

countryside, where the wine is pumped from a vat into a container, as you would pump petrol into your car. For just a few euros you can fill your container with five litres of good stuff.

The dining: It is hard to find a dud meal, even in modest establishments. The French love local produce cooked without fuss, vegetables take centre stage, and the excellent bread is free and keeps coming. Most bistros and cafes have pix fixe menus of three courses at reasonable cost, which means you know what you’ll pay before you eat, and the house wine by the pichet (jug) barely adds to the cost.

The towns and villages: Some of the prettiest villages are found in the south, from the rocky spectacle of Gordes and Les Baux to the leafy charm of St Remy and the red-earth vibrancy of Roussillon. Then there are the towns of Avignon, with its gothic Palais des Papes (where the Popes lived during the 14th century), and the Roman amphitheatres

in Nimes and Arles. L’Isle sur la Sorgue is called the Venice of Provence for its many canals and waterways. In smaller villages, such as Menerbes and Bonnieux, the petanque players will put you right in the heart of Peter Mayle (A Year in Provence) country.

The cheese: Oui, sil vous plait. With more varieties than there are days in the year, you’ll be in a frenzy. Start with the familiar — a soft camembert, a runny brie — and build up to daring varieties with names you can’t pronounce (try a munster and then a saint nectaire, followed by a roquefort). Better still, set a goal to try a new-to-you cheese every day of your visit.

The history: The Romans swept through much of France 2000 years ago

and left a legacy that exists in many parts today. A standout is the three-tiered Pont du Gard, the aqueduct the Romans built to carry water from a spring in Uzes to Nimes, 50km away — an engineering marvel that astounds.

The patisseries: Even if you don’t own a sweet tooth, you will love standing at the window of any patisserie. Almond croissants, macrons, pain au chocolat, mille-feuille, tarte-tatine, citron and strawberry tarts . . . the pastries are displayed as though they were precious jewels. Give in. Don’t even try to resist.

The beaches, the glam: Nice, St Tropez, Villefranche, Cap Ferrat . . . you don’t have to say another thing.

www.annrickard.com

(Clockwise, from top left) Beautiful gardens roam the region, including at the hospital courtyard in Arles; history is also on show in the town of St Paul de Venice, including in the town’s doorways; and the Saint-Benezet Bridge at Avignon.

“Where the use of softening drops at home is not effective, or where a dry technique is preferred, we can help,” says director and founder Lisa Hellwege.

“Few people realise the ear is actually a self-cleaning organ. The use of cotton buds or other implements in the ears can actually

push wax further down the canal, often worsening symptoms.

“We work alongside general practitioners, audiologists and the general public to provide a safe and effective wax removal service where experience and qualifications are paramount,” Lisa explains.

WHY should we worry about ear wax?

Most of the time, we don’t needto. Ear wax is a naturally occurring substance that protects and lubricates the ear canal.

But for up to 15,000 Tasmanians, ear wax can build up to the point of leading to unwanted symptoms such as loss of hearing, ringing in the ears, a feeling of fullness, itching and pain.

Obstructions such as hearing aidstend to exacerbate ear wax build-up. Nestled inside your ears, hearing aids prevent your ear wax’s natural pathway out. A build-up of wax behind a hearing aid can cause the aid to not seal properly or lead to whistling noises from feedback.

Audiologists, who work with clients to help them preserve, manage and improve their hearing, may recommend removal of impacted wax prior to the taking of an ear impression, or performing a hearing test. Meanwhile, updated

Community programs co-ordinator Lee Marsh says research shows that remaining socially connected, active and independent at home is extremely important as people age.

“Uniting AgeWell’s focus is on supporting seniors to experience a sense of wellbeing, choice and independence at all stages of life, and to remain valued members of their communities,” Ms Marsh says.

GUS Augustin is blossoming in his community thanks to the care and support he receives at home from Uniting AgeWell.

Following a stroke in 2012 thatleft him with aphasia, a language disorder that impairs the expression and understanding of language, including the ability to read and write, Gus started receiving a home-care package from the leading not-for-profit aged-care provider. The support has enabled him to continue living independently and doing the things that are most important to him — including gardening at a local community garden.

Gus’s son, Jacques Augustin, saidUniting AgeWell’s home-care support enabled his father to remain independent and connected with the things he loved.

“Dad is independent enough to live by himself, but can also access

extra help from Uniting AgeWell when he requires,” Jacques said.

“His home-care staff organise taxis for him to attend appointments and social activities as he requests.”

Gus has a wide network of friends and also attends social and therapy support groups through Uniting AgeWell, including a specialist stroke group.

Uniting AgeWell provides home-care packages to seniors across Hobart to enable them to live and age well at home. Support can include assistance with household chores, personal care, transport to appointments, help with shopping, or a friendly catch-up.

A client adviser works with clients to identify goals, preferences and interests, and develop a plan of care to help optimise life at home and in the community.

SENIORS are taking to the digital era by switching from cash and cheques to digital payment methods, with card transactions doubling since 2007.

The 2016 Reserve Bank’s triennial Consumer Payments Survey shows debit and credit cards are the most frequent means of payment, overtaking cash.

In 2007, cash payments accounted for 70 per cent of transactions. In 2016 they account for 37 per cent.

However, while tap-and-go is increasingly the choice for lower-value transactions and direct debits are being used more frequently, cash is still used regularly in households aged 50 and older.

The amount of cash carried in the65 and over age group was about $95, more than twice that being carried around by people in other age groups.

Our use of cheques is declining, with the RBA reporting a decline in the past decade of about 13 per cent. In 2007 the RBA reports cheques represented about 2 per cent of payments by consumers aged 65 and over. In 2016 it has fallen to less than 1 per cent.

Older Australians are moving towards internet banking as they gain confidence in electronic payment options.

The survey found internet use among older Australians is rising, and their largest single use of the internet is for online banking.

About 40 per cent of survey respondents aged 65 and over used online payments in the 2016 survey week, compared with just 5 per centin 2007.

Using a mobile phone app for payment is considered a relatively new option.

It is gaining momentum though, with a noticeable increase in online and person-to-person payments.

But don’t sit back and relax, as there is another change on its way this month.

The new payments platform is described as a world-class platform for payments that will allow for money and data to move between bank accounts instantaneously.

The word from the RBA is the NPP will allow for simply addressed payments with near real-time funds availability to consumers 24/7.

Payment messages will be ableto carry more remittance information than the 18 characters currently available for direct entry payments.

“We have become individualisticand I see family breakdowns, not only on Bathurst Island, but also in my own family,” she said. “We seem to be forgetting that the core of society is family, and I think individualism is wrecking it.”

Sister Anne has a one-word

answer for this problem: respect. The senior members of the Bathurst Island community are gravely concerned about the loss of language and culture, and the loss of respect for the elders.

“Respect has to come back intothe vocabulary of all of us. Once that respect goes, what have we got?” she said.

Sister Anne Gardiner remains proud of her faith and of the Tiwi people's willingness to safeguard their language and culture.

AUSTRALIA’S Senior Citizen ofthe Year in 2017, Anne Gardiner, is on the move,

using her national profile to benefit the Tiwi indigenous community on Bathurst Island.

As a result of this award and through the generosity of Richard Rolfe OAM, the dealer principal at the Audi Centre Canberra, Sister Anne has been given a four-wheel-drive scooter that will allow her to activate a new project where she will meet and talk to every Tiwi person between the ages of 18 and 35 about self-esteem, motivation and mutual respect.

“I will sit down and talk to the people to see if I can help them to understand the world that they are living in,” she said.

“These people can be leaders

in their own right. Their ideas have got to be listened to. Let’s give them a fair go.

“I will be able to take what theytell me, decipher it and then say, if the Tiwi people allow me to do it, these are their thoughts regarding the situation they are finding themselves in.”

Sister Anne is understated in heracceptance of her award, but when it comes to the Tiwi people she has no qualms about using the award to

have her concerns for theirfuture heard.

She is also calling on medical professionals to make the time to sit down with the Tiwi people to talk to them about their health.

“They have leaders in their owncommunity,” she said.

“They have to look at this very seriously and say, ‘what can we do to better our health?’ ”

Sister Anne is seeing the

community elders starting to take charge of trying to turn around their problems, by working on the younger generations to retain the Tiwi language and culture.

In support of these communityelders, in March she handed custodianship of the people’s Patakijiyali Museum to a group of four “strong” women so they could

continue to collect and preserve Tiwi artefacts and stories. She still has a connection to the museum through the family tree project, where each family will receive a copy of their family tree.

“The women are working on computers, trying to get the family trees finished. They are also working on storybooks and a

calendar for next year,” she said. Before her reign as Senior

Australian of the Year finishes in January, Sister Anne wants to see one thing change among the Tiwi community: she wants to see respect return for its elders.

“If they can respect themselvesfirst, then they will really know who they are,” she said.

A CLIENT shares her Residential Lift Company experience...

Some time ago, my husband and I moved into the house of our dreams, a double-storey with a beautiful view of the River Derwent. However, it soon became evident, because of some health problems I developed, that I was not managing the stairs very well.

With our living and sleeping quarters upstairs and the utilities below, the challenge of the stairs was a daily concern.

I felt a bit like a prisoner in my own home, as I relied heavily on my husband to do all the heavy lifting, bringing the shopping upstairs, and the washing down and up. My focus

was using my upper body to help me in the assent.

Then a friend saw the ResidentialLift at a home show and referred the company to us. Within a very short time we had a lift installed, which has turned my life around.

It fits so neatly into our decor that one of our guests, sitting at the dining table looking at the lift, wondered where it was. It is totally unobtrusive and elegant.

The Residential Lift Company staff were always courteous and helpful, and the lift was installed without any inconvenience to us.

I’m very grateful to the companyfor this simple, attractive, reasonably priced lift, which has returned my independence.

EILEEN Kramer, at the age of 102, throws a completely different perspective on the notion that age is a “limiting factor”.

“She’s just really special,” Arts Health Institute co-founder and chief executive Dr Maggie Haertsch said of the institute’s lively and independent ambassador.

“Our whole focus is around improving the quality of life for older people; she personifies that,” Maggie said.

A mutually rewarding relationship exists between Eileen and the institute – she continues to be creative, and helps with needs such as staging and art supplies.

“She comes to our events as well, where she basically is able to engage her audience,” Maggie said.

“She doesn’t like the word ‘aged’;she prefers to say she’s been on the planet a long time.

“Eileen enjoys being around other generations. She’s hip and

groovy, and has a beautiful way of living. She’s a great inspiration for everybody.

“Ageing is thought of as a condition of life, but actually it’s just ‘life’. It’s about embracing it and loving it. It’s about keeping on creating and having something that’s meaningful.

“The arts and health together isthe art of living well. Using imagination and the arts helps frame your identity.”

Maggie, an academic, nurse andmidwife, proud grandmother and “half Eileen’s age”, is on a mission to improve the quality of life as people age. In 2015, she was a finalist in the United Nations Australian Association’s Media Peace Prize Awards for her work promoting positive images of ageing, and in the same year she was recognised as one of the 100 Women of Influence in Australia.

“I’ve always felt that aged-careservices are about enablement,” Maggie said. “I know you don’t thrive when you’re older when
