People’s Desire

The Union of Myanmar has become anindependent and sovereign nation again for 63years.

From time immemorial, Myanmar had stoodtall with own monarchs and sovereignty. It wasvery inhumane of colonialists that annexedMyanmar through three aggressive wars from1824 to 1885. In consequence, Myanmar losther independence and sovereignty. Brilliant, patriotic young men hand in hand with thepeople fought back British colonialists andFascists at risk to life, thus enabling themotherland to regain independence andsovereignty.

In his message sent on the occasion of the63rd Anniversary Independence Day (2011),Chairman of the State Peace and DevelopmentCouncil Senior General Than Shwe says, “Itcost greatly for the nation to regainindependence and sovereignty. The value ofindependence and sovereignty is most noticeableonly when they are lost. Naturally, the peopletake independence and sovereignty for granted. It is not strange, certain covetous, aggressivecountries are anxious to gain political controlover a geographically strategic country likeMyanmar. Accordingly, all national races areto remain cohesive forever in order forperpetuation of independence and sovereignty.”

Myanmar has passed through many periods, good and bad. Now, multiparty democracygeneral elections have been held successfully.Soon, Hluttaws will be convened withrepresentatives-elect. Then, the newgovernment will have to take over duties forbuilding a modern, developed nation.

In the process, the government has laidsound foundations. Over a couple of decades, ithas improved all sectors. What is needed toshape the future of the nation is that the newgovernment carries out nation-building tasks incooperation with the people.

Now, Myanmar is transforming itself fromold to new system. The entire national brethrenhave remained united in working fordemocratization. They have to continue tosafeguard the Union for its perpetuation, whiletaking giant strides towards the new democraticnation.

NB astronomer, 10, youngest to discoversupernova

TORONTO, 4 Jan—— Kathryn AuroraGray isn’t interested in making a careerout of astronomy when she grows up.

She might want to rethink that afterbecoming the youngest person to discovera supernova, or exploding star.

The 10-year-old Fredericton girlidentified on the weekend a previouslyunseen burst of light in an expanse ofstars 240 light-years away to better theprevious record by four years.

“I was really excited. I had so muchfun finding it,” Gray said in an interviewfrom her home Monday night. “I was soexcited I didn’t sleep that night waiting tofind out.”

The Royal Astronomical Society of

Canada confirmed the discoveryMonday, saying the magnitude-17supernova was found in galaxy UGC3378 in the constellation ofCamelopardalis.

The society also said Gray is theyoungest person to ever make such adiscovery.

Supernovas are stellar explosionsthat signal the violent deaths of starsseveral times more massive than oursun. They are rare events but are relativelyeasy to spot with modest telescopesbecause they outshine other stars.

Researchers find “alarming”decline in bumblebees

WASHINGTON, 4 Jan—Four previously abundant species ofbumblebee are close to disappearing in the United States, researchersreported Monday in a study confirming that the agriculturallyimportant bees are being affected worldwide.

They documented a 96 percent decline in the numbers of the fourspecies, and said their range had shrunk by as much as 87 percent. As with honeybees, a pathogen is partly involved, but the researchersalso found evidence of inbreeding caused by habitat loss.

“We provide incontrovertible evidence that multiple Bombusspecies have experienced sharppopulation declines at the national level,”the researchers reported in theProceedings of the National Academy ofSciences, calling the findings “alarming.”

“These are one of the most importantpollinators of native plants,” SydneyCameron of the University of Illinois,Urbana, who led the study, said in atelephone interview.

In recent years, experts havedocumented a disappearance of bees inwhat is widely called colony collapsedisorder, blamed on many factorsincluding parasites, fungi, stress, pesticidesand viruses. But most studies havefocused on honeybees.

Bumblebees are also importantpollinators, Cameron said, but are far lessstudied. Bumblebees pollinate tomatoes, blueberries and cranberries, she noted.

Indian Rocket launch failure caused by faulty cableBANGALORE, 4 Jan—A team that analyzed data from the failed launch of India’s

Geostationary Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) has found the primary cause of the 25 Decmishap was the “untimely and inadvertent snapping” of a group of 10 connectors locatedat the bottom of the rocket’s Russian supplied upper stage.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said in a 31 Dec statement that thevehicle’s performance was normal up to 47.5 seconds after liftoff. It then began to strayfrom its planned orientation angle, which resulted in higher structural loads than the vehiclewas designed to handle.

The rocket, which was carrying a telecommunications satellite, began to break apartabout 58 seconds into the flight and was destroyed by command at 64 seconds.

ISRO said some of the connectors that snapped carried command signals from theonboard computer near the top of the vehicle to the control systems for the four L40 strap-on boosters that augment the rocket’s first stage.—Internet

LG announces “FlickerFree” LW6500 Cinema

3D TVWASHINGTON, 4 Jan—In what may

turn out to be a sneak peek of CES 2011HDTV trends, LG announced the newestentry to their 2011 HDTV lineup—andit’s a 3D TV that doesn’t use the heavy, expensive active-shutter 3D glasses.

LG’s new 65-inch LW6500 usespolarized lens-glasses, similar to the kindsof glasses used in 3D movie theaters, toachieve the 3D effect. Unlike active-shutter glasses, which use small LCDscreens to alternately dim each lens, polarized 3D glasses don’t require abattery and should be more forgiving ofviewers seated at different angles. Bestof all, LG claims they’re “Flicker Free”,with two certifications from Intertek andTÜV to bolster their claim, so you won’thave that annoying flickering-lightproblem when you sit down to watchyour 3D flicks.

Polarized 3D glasses are alsosignificantly cheaper to manufacture andlighter (LG’s glasses weigh 16 grams) sothey won’t be as tiring to wear. Note thatthere is no estimated retail price or shipdate yet, though the LW6500 will roll out“in select markets” after CES.

OSLO, 4 Jan—The annual death toll of trafficaccidents in Norway has been on a steady declinein the past 15 years, local media reported onSunday.

The Norwegian Council for Road Safetyrecorded 210 deaths in traffic accidents last year, two less than that of 2009, director of the councilKari Sandberg told the Norwegian broadcast andTV company NRK.

“It is the lowest figure since the 1950s,” shesaid. “It looks good in the sense that we have hada steady decline over the past 15 years.”

New and safer cars might be one of the reasonswhy the death toll on Norwegian roads has beencontinuously falling in recent years, she said.

Meanwhile, Sanberg said more traffic accidentscould be avoided with greater caution while driving.

She also called on drivers to keep the speedlimits and passengers to use safety belts.

Speeding, driving under the influence of alcoholand not using safety belts are the three usual fatalfactors in road accidents, according to the director.

CANBERRA, 4 Jan—Nearly 40 Australian andinternational scientists set sail to Antarctica onTuesday to study a 2,500-square-kilometre iceberg.

The team led by the Commonwealth Scientificand Industrial Research Organization’s (CSIRO)Steve Rintoul departed Hobart for Antarctica’sMertz Glacier, which was hit by a 97-kilometre-long glacier last year, breaking off a 78-kilometrepiece.

Dr Rintoul said the collision, known as a“calving”, gave scientists a rare insight to studychanges in the Southern Ocean’s temperature andsalinity.

“The calving of the iceberg has exposed partsof the seabed which haven’t been available forstudy in our lifetimes,” he told ABC News.

“It’s a biological hotspot supporting everythingfrom microscopic photo plankton, right up to sealsand whales.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get inthere.”

Dr Rintoul said the waters surrounding theMertz Glacier are also one of the key links in thenetwork of ocean currents that influence the world’sclimate.

Meanwhile, Australian Antarctic Division’s DrMartin Riddle said the voyage could uncover newspecies of wildlife previously hidden under the ice,as they have been buried under 400 meters of icefor the last 80 years.

The team was equipped with cameras whichworked 3,000 meters under the sea, as well asspecially designed brackets to protect the equipmentin deep sea canyons. They will also takemeasurements of carbon dioxide stored in theocean.

this study, researchers reporta series of findings that offernovel insights into cellularand molecular mechanis-ms operating at the opticnerve head in two mousemodels of glaucoma. Mostnotably, they discoveredthat at a specific locationwithin the optic nerve head, there is a unique class ofcells called astrocytes thatdemonstrate properties thatappear to make them acritical factor in the visualblinding that occurs inglaucoma.

Further, at this samesite, researchers foundabnormal forms of a proteincalled gamma synucleinthat is similar to abnormal

Finally, researchersdiscovered that at thisanatomical location, thereis a surprising processwhereby astrocytes removethe debris of neurons, thecells that die in neurode-generative disorders suchas glaucoma. It is likely thatthis newly discoveredprocess involving removal

of the debris of one cell bya neighbouring cell isimportant not only inglaucoma and Parkinson ‘sdisease, but also for manyneurodegenerative disea-ses.

TOKYO , 4 Jan — Japan’s populationfell by a record amount last year as thenumber of deaths climbed to an all-timehigh in the quickly ageing country, thegovernment said on Saturday. Japan facesa looming demographic squeeze. Babyboomers are moving towards retirement, with fewer workers and taxpayers to re-

place them. The Japanese boast amongthe highest life expectancies in the worldbut have extremely low birth rates.

Japan logged 1.19 million deaths in2010 — the biggest number since 1947,when the health ministry’s annual recordsbegan. The number of births was nearlyflat at 1.07 million. As a result, Japan con-tracted by 123,000 people, which was themost ever and represents the fourth con-secutive year of population decline. Thetop causes of death were cancer, heartdisease and stroke, the ministry said.

Japanese aged 65 and older make upabout a quarter of Japan’s current popula-tion. The government projects that by2050 that figure will climb to 40 percent.Like in other advanced countries, young people are waiting to get marriedand choosing to have fewer children be-cause of careers and lifestyle issues. To-day’s report showed that 706,000 mar-riages were registered last year — thefewest since 1954 and a sign that birth ratesare unlikely to jump dramatically anytimesoon. Japan’s total population stood at125.77 million as of October, accordingto the ministry.— Internet

SAN FRANCISCO, 4 Jan —Californians can start say-ing goodbye to traditional100-watt incandescentlight bulbs now that thestate has become the firstin the country to require anew standard for thescrew-base bulbs. Expertssay the new rules, whichtook effect New Year’sDay, will save residentsmoney and energy. Cali-fornia is already the na-tion’s leader in energy-ef-ficiency standards.

As of Saturday, whatused to be a 100-watt lightbulb manufactured andsold in California will haveto use 72 watts or less. The72-watt replacement bulb, also called an energy-sav-ing halogen light, will pro-vide the same amount oflight, called lumens, forlower energy cost. Simi-lar new standards for tra-ditional 75-watt, 60-wattand 40-watt incandescentbulbs will go into effect inCalifornia over the nextfew years, with wattagesreduced to 53, 43 and 29respectively.The new ruledoes not ban incandescentlight bulbs; it just requiresthose bulbs to be 25 to 30percent more efficient.

And it only affects in-candescent light bulbsmanufactured in 2011 or

later, not those already inuse or on store shelves. The new lights are com-parably priced to the regu-lar incandescent lights. Atwo-bulb package of 100-watt incandescent bulbs isabout $4.32 at Lowe’s,while a four-bulb packageof new 72-watt halogenbulbs is $8.66, or $4.33 fortwo. By contrast, a two-bulb package of energy-saving compact

Tumour cell cancer testcalled promising

BOSTON, 4 Jan— Johnson & Johnson andMassachusetts General Hospital say they aredeveloping and marketing a blood test that couldfind a single cancer cell in blood.

Dr Mehmet Toner, director of theBioMicroElectroMechanical Systems ResourceCentre in Massachusetts General’s Centre forEngineering in Medicine, says it could be five yearsbefore the test is on the market but its implicationsfor patients are significant, CNN reported Monday.

“It is very big,” Toner says in a statement. “Ithas the potential to turn cancer into a chronicdisease, because we can monitor patientsindividually and respond with treatment to thegenetic makeup of their cancer.”

Toner says the test would be an easy-to-administer, non-invasive blood test that wouldanalyze the genetic makeup of the cancer cells.
