Course Selection Guidelines

Process

July-August On-Line Subject Selection completed.

July-August Deans and Learning Area Leaders review subject preferences. Students are consulted if course seems inappropriate.

Late January Final confirmation of courses takes place during Course Confirmation Day. NB: Failure to attend course confirmation may mean students will not get into the subjects of their choice.

Requirements

A full time course of study must be undertaken by all students:

Year 11 English and Mathematics

Science (unless exempted by Dean)

plus three other subjects

Year 12 English

plus the equivalent four and a half to five full year subjects

Year 13 Equivalent of five or six full year subjects

Students wishing to take six subjects at Year 13 need to consult their Dean. Automatic entry to subjects depends on the stated prerequisites being met. Students who do not have automatic entry can apply to the Learning Area Leader for discretionary entry.

Availability of subjects

Availability of subjects will depend on staffing and student numbers. If numbers for a subject are too low, the subject may be combined with another, be timetabled for fewer than four hours per week, be taught out of normal class hours, or withdrawn.

If numbers for a subject are too high, a ballot may be needed to determine which students can gain entry. See Senior Subject Entry Process diagram on Page 84.

Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC)

There are many opportunities for students to participate in class trips, sporting competitions and cultural events that take them out of regular classroom learning. Whilst we encourage participation in EOTC, students must take care that such involvement does not compromise their classroom work and assessments. Curriculum based EOTC is listed with course descriptions in this handbook. Be aware however that some sports (e.g. rowing) and cultural activities (e.g. Stage Challenge) can involve significant time out of class. A voluntary absence from school, for example family holidays, requires written approval from the Principal in advance. Students are expected to catch up missed work and to communicate well in advance with their teachers for absences from assessments. In cases where assessments cannot be rescheduled, students will be unable to be assessed for that standard.

National Certificates in Educational Achievement (NCEA)

This information is a summary; full details are available through the school, on our website or at www.nzqa.govt.nz. All information about NCEA, University Entrance, university approved subjects and Onslow course prerequisites is accurate for 2018

How will I be assessed?

For assessment purposes, the skills and knowledge that you gain in subjects are described in detail by ‘standards’. Standards come in a range of levels, reflecting how demanding they are. Some standards are internally assessed at school, and some externally in end-of-year examinations. Subjects are arranged in groups of standards, for example, a year long course worth 20 credits generally consists of 5-6 standards. Most courses have 18-21 credits.

Standards

Subjects are assessed using Unit Standards and Achievement Standards. For Achievement Standards you can be graded: “Not Achieved”, “Achieved”, “Merit” or “Excellence”. Unit Standards are generally graded “Not Achieved” or “Achieved”.

Credits

Every standard achieved is worth a set number of credits. A year long course is usually worth about 18-21 credits. Credits are like points toward your qualification, and they mount up till you achieve national qualifications. Note that credits can be gained over more than one year. It is important to ensure that you gain the necessary standards for automatic entry to subjects you wish to study in the following year.

NCEA Level 1

When you have achieved 80 credits at any level, you will qualify for NCEA Level 1 (generally these will be Level 1 credits, but they do not have to be). Ten of the credits must come from numeracy standards and ten credits must come from literacy standards. See the literacy and numeracy information in each Year 11 course description. Literacy and numeracy credits do not have to come solely from English, Te Reo Māori or Mathematics courses.

NCEA Level 2

NCEA Level 2 requires a minimum of 60 credits at Level 2 or above and up to 20 credits from Level 1. Credits can be used for more than one qualification, so some of your NCEA Level 1 credits can count toward NCEA Level 2. Level 1 literacy and numeracy requirements must be met.

NCEA Level 3

For NCEA Level 3 you will need to achieve 80 credits of which 60 must be at Level 3 or above, and 20 at Level 2 or above. Level 1 literacy and numeracy requirements must be met.

Endorsements

Your NCEA can be 'endorsed' if your results are good enough. For example, you could have "NCEA Level 1 with Merit". Your Record of Achievement will show you if you have been awarded an Endorsement. If you gain 50 credits at Excellence, your NCEA will be endorsed with Excellence. Likewise, if you gain 50 credits at Merit (or Merit and Excellence) your NCEA will be endorsed with Merit. You can earn credits counting towards endorsement over more than one year and more than one level. However, they must be gained at the level of the certificate or above. For example, Level 2 credits will count towards endorsement of a Level 1 NCEA, but Level 1 credits will not count towards endorsement of a Level 2 NCEA. Individual courses can also be ‘endorsed’ if you gain 14 or more credits at Excellence or 14 credits or more at Merit and Excellence in one course, in one academic year. At least three credits must be from internally assessed standards and at least three credits from externally assessed standards with the exception of Physical Education courses (14 internal credits) and Level 3 Visual Arts courses (either 14 internal or 14 external credits).

University entrance

University Entrance (UE) will continue to be the minimum requirement to go to a New Zealand university. To be awarded UE you will need:

NCEA Level 3

Three subjects – at Level 3 or above, made up of: o 14 credits each, in three approved subjects (see the list on page 5 of this book)

Literacy – 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of: o 5 credits in reading o 5 credits in writing

Numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of: o Achievement standards – specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or o Unit standards – package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627 – all three required)

* The three numeracy unit standards are taught at Onslow College and Capital Training Once you have met the requirements for University Entrance this will appear on your Record of Achievement. Most universities now have specific requirements for entry to particular university courses. If you have a particular university course in mind, check the university entry criteria as soon as possible with the careers advisor. In particular, the universities based in Wellington, Dunedin, Palmerston North and Auckland have introduced a points system based on NCEA grades from university approved Level 3 subjects. Merit and Excellence grades generate more points than an Achieved grade, so you are advised to put in the necessary effort to gain the highest possible grades over your best 80 credits from University Entrance approved Level 3 subjects.

Scholarship

Scholarship is externally assessed. It is designed to extend top-level students and to financially assist very able students to attend university. Students sitting Scholarship will be assessed on their ability to think laterally and in the abstract. The examinations cover the same content as Level 3 Achievement Standards, but the standard is much higher. A course of study must be completed. The extra examinations, which require additional work, can impact on NCEA Level 3 results, but we encourage able students to enrol in Scholarship. Results are received after the start of the university year and they do not contribute to University Entrance or NCEA Level 3.

NCEA Fees and Financial Assistance

NCEA fees are invoiced separately from other school fees. The cost for domestic students is currently $76.70 which is a flat fee for any number of credits and a New Zealand Scholarship fee of $30 (GST incl.) per Scholarship subject. The cost for International fee-paying students is currently $383.30 and $102.20 (GST incl.) per Scholarship subject.

Financial Assistance

Financial assistance will continue to be available for those students who meet the financial assistance criteria based on income, benefit or multiple-candidate applications from one family. Application forms are available on the NZQA website. Updated details are posted each year in May on the Onslow College website. International students are not eligible for financial assistance. See www.onslow.school.nz and your green National Assessment Handbook for further details regarding management of NCEA.

Duplicate Standards

It is possible that courses may offer the same NCEA standard. This happens mainly in Technology subjects. Students can only record the credits once. Any student taking more than one Technology subject needs to talk to all teachers and make a decision about which course will award the credits. Course endorsement will be a factor in the choice

Special Assessment Conditions (SAC)

What are Special Assessment Conditions (SAC)? SACs are a change in the way assessments are normally approached for NCEA. SACs may include:

Or any combination of the above

Why have SACs? Special Assessment Conditions allow students to demonstrate their true potential in assessment situations in all subject areas. SACs are granted to students with a specific learning differences or medical condition that affect their ability to perform to potential. SACs are there to help remove barriers to achievement to help level the playing field.

Who is entitled to SACs? Students with Specific Learning Differences (SLD) or long-term medical, sensory or physical conditions may be entitled for Special Assessment Conditions if there is a significant barrier to their performance in both internal and external assessments. Eligible students trial SACs in Years 9 & 10. Evidence is gathered (both specialist reports and/or in-school data) and an application is made to NZQA at the end of Year 10 or start of Year 11. NZQA makes the decision and the student may then use those confirmed SACs going forward. In addition if a student sustains a significant injury during the course of the year that will impact on assessment performance they can apply for a “writer” or “rest breaks” during exams. These applications can be made prior to Labour weekend of each year. After Labour weekend students will receive a derived grade. VOCATIONAL PATHWAYS The NZ Government has developed a new education

tool called Vocational Pathways. Vocational

Pathways provides a clear framework for vocational

options and improves the links between education

decisions and future employment. Using this tool,

students are able to map and plan towards a clear

career goal whether that is in the workforce or

moving towards further study.

The pathways help you as a student, see how your

learning and achievement will be valued in the ‘real

world’ when you look for a job and start your career.

Achieving Vocational Pathways means that as a

student you have developed skills and achieved in

areas that employers’ value, and that you have skills

and knowledge that is relevant to their industries.

By achieving enough credits from the standards recommended by the sector, you can have your NCEA endorsed

by one or many vocational pathways. This makes it easier for employers to see if you have the strengths and

abilities they are looking for.

If you are aiming for a career in a sector, the pathway helps you to see which subjects and standards you should

do to get to where you want to go. For most jobs or careers, you’ll definitely need to further your education after

school through tertiary study or training on the job.

Profile Builder – Through your Vocational Pathways Profile you will be able to see a graph which can show you

what you plan to learn or your current achievements. The profile builder will be available via the Portal.

The Job Profiles – Provides a large number of roles and occupations in each industry sector. If you haven’t

decided and you are thinking about the future, the pathways can help see how your strengths and interests

match up to an amazing range of jobs and study options out there.

Course Description 11BEC aims to provide students with a chance to learn business theory then apply their learning by carrying out a Business Activity. The Economics section of the course focuses on the Supply and Demand model and uses it explain the choices of Consumers and Producers when buying goods and services. Course Description Chemistry helps us understand the chemical transformations happening everywhere around us. Course Description This course aims to further develop understanding of the media in the New Zealand and global context. Media Studies is about the active exploration, analysis, creation and enjoyment of the media and its products. The course examines the dynamic role of the media in society, how messages are constructed in regard to individuals, communities and cultures and how media products are produced, controlled and distributed. Through Media Studies, students gain the knowledge and skills to conceive, plan, design and produce media products.
