Crews lowered the 838-toncutterhead into the SR 99tunneling machine’s launch piton May 31, 2013.

The two arms of Bertha’sgiant segment erectorwill place the concretesegments of the tunnelliner as she digsunderneath the city.

Still wrapped in its packaging, the SR 99 tunneling machine’s soil conveyorscrew waits to be lowered into the pit where tunneling will start this summer.
