ABOUT INDIRA GANDHI NATIONAL TRIBAL UNIVERSITY

Indira Gandhi National Tribal University came into force on

8thJ uly, 2008, through the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University

Act, 2007. The University came into concrete form with the

appointment of Prof. C. D. Singh as its first Vice-Chancellor bythe Government of India through its letter no. F.41-3/2007-Desk

    (U) dated 07th J uly, 2008. Prof. Singh took charge of V.C. on J uly

8th, 2008. Among its several aims and Objectives, the University

seeks to provide avenues of higher education and research

facilities primarily for the tribal population of India and formulate

tribal centric development models in order to make them capable

of managing, administering and looking after their own needs by

    access to higher education.

    ABOUT AMARKANTAK

    Amarkantak is Situated at 2241' N. latitude and 81 46 E.

longitudes, 1067 metres above the sea level, in Anuppur district in

Madhya Pradesh, Amarkantak perches the Maikal Mountain which

links the Vindhyan and Satpura ranges. The population of the town as

per 2001 census is around 2000. Many mythological stories relating to

Lord Shiva and his daughter Narmada have been woven around this

mystical town. Three important rivers i.e. the Narmada, the Sone and

the J uhila, originate from here forming the lifeline of a major part ofCentral India. The place has its religious importance too. The Kalchuris

constructed a cluster of temples that are still intact of which

Machendranath and Pataleshwar temples are significant. The

Archaeological Survey of India has declared the cluster of temples as a

    protected site.

Its geographical set up has bestowed upon it the everlasting

greenery and serene beauty. The area is covered with sub-tropical hill

forest, rich in various flora and fauna as natural resources. Various

tribal communities like the Gond, the Baiga, the Khariya and the Panika

and others reside in this area. Each tribal group has its own tradition

    and culture.

    CONNECTING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

    WITH TRIBAL LIFE

Apart from inviting the conceptual and qualitative research

papers, the seminar will also outline the importance for empirical and

field survey-based papers on the indigenous tribal population and their

livelihood pattern along with self-sufficiency economy system. These

papers can be an eye-opener for the participants to understand the

need for computer education and its direct impact in creating

employments and income for the tribal youths. It is long felt that

educating and training the tribal students in the schools and colleges

and equipping them with skills to optimum use of information

technology is the basic motto of the seminar. As such, the Central India

comprises many primitive tribes like Savara, Gadava, Borida, J uang,

Kharia, Khond, Bhumij, Bhuinya, Munda, Santhal, Oraons, Ho and

Birhor, Katkari, Kol, the Bhils, Koraku, Agaria and Pardhan Baiga.

These tribes remain to be poor and neglected unless there is an effort

for creating awareness among these tribes about the merits of

information technology. In this background, the Department of

Computer Science, IGNTU has made an earnest attempt to find the

ways and means for equipping the tribal population with latest skills

and knowledge on the use of computer science.
