DESCRIPTION

ALTER-Net is a network of excellence for Long-Term Biodiversity, Ecosystem and Awareness Research spanning 24 institutions in 7 European countries. The network adresses biodiversity issues at a European scale through the development of an integrative framework for research and monitoring. Part of this framework has been concerned with distributed data and information sharing to allow seamless data access and querying of data resources across multiple institutions and heterogenous data spanning several scientific domains. The establishment of syntactical and semantical interoperability of data resources and services are seen as indispensable requirement for integrating socioe-cological and ecological sciences at a global scale. To achieve the semantic interopability the Socio-Ecological Research and Observation oNTOlogy (SERONTO) has been developed as an extensible semantic framework. This poster highlights a proof of concept study validating the use of SERONTO and discusses its application in the context of the LifeWatch research infrastructure and presents specific data integration use cases for biodiversity.
