Greetings all, I’ll get straight to the point. Commencing the week as a Manly fan gloating over a 54-nil victory over the Eels was rather excellent. Moving on….. Mrs Newton Last Thursday a large number of CVPS staff attended the funeral of their friend and colleague, Mrs Denise Newton. Those staff who attended were able to do so largely because of the support provided by colleagues from local schools, several of whom spent the day teaching at CVPS. I would like to thank the following teachers who assisted on the day; Kerry Fairs and Cynthia Joffrin (Fairfield West PS), Irene Dove and Vesna Rosic (Fairvale PS), Mymy Tankhounthavong and Natasha Tjam (Lansvale PS) and Cara Davidson (Deputy Principal, St Andrews PS). I would also like to thank the following principals who “loaned” us their staff for the day; Genelle Goldfinch (Fairfield West PS), Anthony Pitt (Fairvale PS), Mark Diamond (Lansvale PS) and Richard Batty (St Andrews PS). Tough times often bring out the best in people and this was no exception. Thank you to the many parents, students and community members who expressed condolences, your support is greatly appreciated. Mrs Newton would have been very proud. SRC Induction Our Student Representative Council (SRC) have commenced their work for 2018 and were inducted into their new roles at a special ceremony held in the hall on Thursday, followed by refreshments in the staffroom for the student leaders and their parents. Guy Zangari MP will joined us for this special event; thank you Mr Zangari for your ongoing support of CVPS. Thank you to Mrs Riley and Miss Falcone for the work that they are undertaking with our SRC throughout the year; congratulations to all students who have been recognised as leaders by their peers, what a great reflection of your character. Canley Vale Road Pedestrian Crossing We have been advised by the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) that no crossing guard is available for the Canley Vale Rd crossing until Friday morning. I contacted the police but due to the recent mergers of Cabramatta and Fairfield LAC’s they were unable to assist. Staff have been monitoring the crossing in the afternoon however are not legally permitted to use the STOP sign as they have not received the required training. Please be careful when crossing the road with your children. Stop and look to ensure that traffic has stopped before crossing the road. Sam Lewis Peace Prize Last year students from 1L were awarded the Sam Lewis Peace Prize. Last Saturday Mrs Phuong and Mrs Villar attended a formal presentation at Federation House, Surry Hills, to accept the award on behalf of the school. Congratulations once again students and Mrs Phuong, what a wonderful achievement. Pevensey Street Gate We aim to open the Pevensey Street pedestrian gate at 2:45pm. On occasions when the gate has been opened late several parents have been extremely rude to the staff member opening the gate. This is totally unacceptable and I have asked staff to monitor this closely and report such incidents. Students are not released from class until 2:50pm and as such parents have ample time to make their way to the location at which they meet their child or children. Please treat our staff members with courtesy.
