Seeking knowledge is compulsory on every Muslim.TRANSCRIPT
Seeking Knowledge in Islam
• Allaah created man and provided him with the tools
for acquiring knowledge, namely hearing, sight and
wisdom
• In Islam, knowledge comes before action; there can
be no action without knowledge
• Allaah warns every Muslim against speaking
without knowledge
“And follow not (O man i.e., say not or do not or witness not) that
of which you have no knowledge. Verily! The hearing, and the
sight, and the heart of each of those one will be questioned”
(Noble Qur’an 17 : 36)
• Knowledge and fear of Allaah is achieved by knowing His
signs and His creation
“It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves
that fear Allah”
(Noble Qur’an 35:28)
• The scholars occupy a noble status in Islam, and which is higher
than the position of others in this world and in the Hereafter
“Allah will exalt in degree those of you who believe, and
those who have been granted knowledge”
(Noble Qur’an 58:11)
• Because of the importance of knowledge, Allaah
commanded His Messenger to seek more of it;
(Noble Qur’an 20:114)
“My Lord! Increase
me in knowledge”
“Are those who know equal to those who
know not?”
(Noble Qur’an 39:9)
“And those that have been given knowledge may know
that it (this Qur’an) is the truth from your Lord, so that
they may believe therein, and their hearts may submit
to it with humility”
(Noble Qur’an 22:54)
• Islam calls us to learn all kinds of beneficial knowledge
• The best of all branches of knowledge is WAHI
(Knowledge of revelation) through which man comes
to know his Lord, his Prophet and his Religion
– This is the knowledge with which Allaah honoured His
Messengers; He taught it to them so that they might teach it
to mankind
Acquired

Revealed Knowled

KNOWLEDGE
Both knowledge should be combined & not to be separated….
Because…
• When Allaah intended to create his vicegerent on earth, He said to the angels;
“And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: Verily I am going to place (mankind) generations after
generations on earth”(Noble Qur’an 2 : 30)
Then …
“He taught Adam (pbuh) all the
names (of everything)”
(Noble Qur’an 2:31)
Therefore…
All Knowledge is
from Allah
Knowledge Can be Divided
as …
KNOWLEDGE
TRUE KNOWLEDGE
USEFUL KNOWLED
GEEg:To please
Allaah
USELESS KNOWLED
GEEg: for fame,
status, etc
FALSE KNOWLEDGEEg: Darwin’s Theory
Cure for death
• Islam is “the way of life” which talks about knowledge,
learning and teaching in detail
• The Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) also talks
about knowledge in greater detail
• Knowledge should be obtain by the process of “SEEK/SEARCH”
• Hence every Muslim is a STUDENT
• Seeking knowledge is “obligatory” means it is an “IBAADAH”
• IBAADAH : Mode of worshipping Allaah Azza Wajal
To seek/to search
Knowledge
Obligation
On every Muslim
Whoever follows a path in the pursuit
of knowledge, Allaah will make a
path to Paradise easy for him.
(Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Kitab-al-Ilm, #10)
The Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
said:
“When a man dies, all his deeds come to an end
except for three
• an ongoing charity,
• beneficial knowledge
• a righteous son who will pray for him.”
(Muslim, Eng.Translation, #1631)
Goal of Knowledge
Benefit Own self
&
Others / Society
Imaam Sufyan at-Thawree Raheemahullah’s
mother said to him when he was a youth:
“If you write down 10 word and
your faith has not improved,
check your self”
We will show them Our signs in the universe, and in their
own selves, until it becomes manifest to them that this
(the Qur’an) is the truth
(Noble Qur’an 41:53)
• Concerning the matter of paying attention to the Qur’aan,
learning and teaching it, the Messenger (pbuh) said:
“The best of you is the one who learns the Qur’aan
and teaches it.”
(Sahih-al-Bukhaari, #4639)
• The Prophet (pbuh) said:
“Whoever calls people to right guidance will
have a reward like that of those
who follow him”
(Muslim, #2674)
Useless Knowledge is the one which is
gained for FAME
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) warned
us about it in a Hadeeth…
• Allah will ask : “What did you do to express gratitude for the
knowledge I have given you”
• The man will reply: “I acquired knowledge and taught it,
and read the Qur’an for Your sake”
• Allah will say : “You have lied. You acquired knowledge so that people might
call you a learned (man) and you read the Qur’an so that they might call
you a reciter, and they have done so
Then Allah will through him into the HELL
[Saheeh Muslim, Eng.Translation, #1905]
