Seeking Knowledge in Islam

Page 2: Seeking knowledge

• Allaah created man and provided him with the tools

for acquiring knowledge, namely hearing, sight and

wisdom

• In Islam, knowledge comes before action; there can

be no action without knowledge

• Allaah warns every Muslim against speaking

without knowledge

Page 3: Seeking knowledge

“And follow not (O man i.e., say not or do not or witness not) that

of which you have no knowledge. Verily! The hearing, and the

sight, and the heart of each of those one will be questioned”

(Noble Qur’an 17 : 36)

Page 4: Seeking knowledge

• Knowledge and fear of Allaah is achieved by knowing His

signs and His creation

“It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves

that fear Allah”

(Noble Qur’an 35:28)

Page 5: Seeking knowledge

• The scholars occupy a noble status in Islam, and which is higher

than the position of others in this world and in the Hereafter

“Allah will exalt in degree those of you who believe, and

those who have been granted knowledge”

(Noble Qur’an 58:11)

Page 6: Seeking knowledge

• Because of the importance of knowledge, Allaah

commanded His Messenger to seek more of it;

(Noble Qur’an 20:114)

“My Lord! Increase

me in knowledge”

Page 7: Seeking knowledge

“Are those who know equal to those who

know not?”

(Noble Qur’an 39:9)

Page 8: Seeking knowledge

“And those that have been given knowledge may know

that it (this Qur’an) is the truth from your Lord, so that

they may believe therein, and their hearts may submit

to it with humility”

(Noble Qur’an 22:54)

Page 9: Seeking knowledge

• Islam calls us to learn all kinds of beneficial knowledge

• The best of all branches of knowledge is WAHI

(Knowledge of revelation) through which man comes

to know his Lord, his Prophet and his Religion

– This is the knowledge with which Allaah honoured His

Messengers; He taught it to them so that they might teach it

to mankind

Both knowledge should be combined & not to be separated….

Because…

Page 11: Seeking knowledge

• When Allaah intended to create his vicegerent on earth, He said to the angels;

“And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: Verily I am going to place (mankind) generations after

generations on earth”(Noble Qur’an 2 : 30)

Page 12: Seeking knowledge

Then …

“He taught Adam (pbuh) all the

names (of everything)”

(Noble Qur’an 2:31)

Page 13: Seeking knowledge

Therefore…

Page 14: Seeking knowledge

The Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam

said:

“When a man dies, all his deeds come to an end

except for three

Page 23: Seeking knowledge

We will show them Our signs in the universe, and in their

own selves, until it becomes manifest to them that this

(the Qur’an) is the truth

(Noble Qur’an 41:53)

Page 24: Seeking knowledge

• Concerning the matter of paying attention to the Qur’aan,

learning and teaching it, the Messenger (pbuh) said:

“The best of you is the one who learns the Qur’aan

and teaches it.”

(Sahih-al-Bukhaari, #4639)

Useless Knowledge is the one which is

gained for FAME

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) warned

us about it in a Hadeeth…

Page 27: Seeking knowledge

• Allah will ask : “What did you do to express gratitude for the

knowledge I have given you”

• The man will reply: “I acquired knowledge and taught it,

and read the Qur’an for Your sake”

• Allah will say : “You have lied. You acquired knowledge so that people might

call you a learned (man) and you read the Qur’an so that they might call

you a reciter, and they have done so

Then Allah will through him into the HELL

[Saheeh Muslim, Eng.Translation, #1905]
