ANALOGY

(After  Gonzalo)

An  analogy  is  a  comparison  between  two  things.  An  author  uses  an  analogy  link  something  new  to  something  we  already  know  in  order  for  the  reader  to  understand  the  new  idea.  Gonzalo  compares  his  father  to  a  child.  The  reader  does  not  know  Gonzalo’s  father,  but  we  all  know  what  a  child  is  like.  So,  the  author  compares  Gonzalo’s  father  to  a  child  in  order  for  us  to  understand  Gonzalo’s  father.  This  is  what  he  says  about  his  father:    “The  older  you  are,  the  younger  you  get  when  you  move  to  the  United  States.”  Page  13  “He  got  younger.  I  got  older.”  Page  14    1.   Explain  why  Gonzalo  felt  that  his  father  got  “younger”  when  he  moved  to  the  United  States.  (Use  examples  from  the  text)  i.e.  His  father  was  younger  because________________,  for  example  __________________.  ______________________________________________________________________________  ______________________________________________________________________________  ______________________________________________________________________________  ______________________________________________________________________________  ________________________________________________________________________  This  is  what  Gonzalo  says  about  his  uncle,  Tio  Juan:  “Tio  Juan  was  the  oldest  man  in  his  pueblo.  But  here  he  became  a  little  baby.”  Page  15  2.   List  one  more  quote  from  this  chapter  where  Gonzalo  refers  to  his  uncle  as  a  child.  ______________________________________________________________________________  ______________________________________________________________________________  _______________________________________________________________________

3.   Complete  this  sentence:  The  author  chose  to  have  Gonzalo  compare  his  father  and  uncle  to  immature  children  because  ______________________________________________________________________________  ______________________________________________________________________________  ________________________________________________________________________

WORD  STUDY  -‐  FLORENCE  A  homestead  is  a  word  used  to  describe  a  home  and  all  of  the  farm  land  surrounding  the  home.  Wikipedia  defines  it  as  the  following:

“A homestead consists of a dwelling, often a farm house together with other buildings and associated land. Historically it referred to land claimed by settler or squatter under the Homestead Act or Dominion Lands Act.”

Florence  describes  the  garden  as  a  homestead.  It  is  an  odd  choice,  as  a  homestead  is  often  describes  as  a  “farm  house”  not  an  apartment.      See  picture  below.

Maricela  says,  “I  am  a  Mexican,  pregnant  sixteen-‐year-‐old.    So  shoot  me  and  get  it  over  with.”  Page  52.

She  then  states,  “And  just  for  just  that  moment  I  stopped  wishing  my  baby  would  die.”  Page  57

Why  did  she  say  that?    What  changed  her  mind?

It  was  a  mind  altering  drug  we  took  daily.

In  the  summers  in  Delhi,  so  very  hot,  my  sisters  and  I  would  lie  upon  it  and  try  to  press  ourselves  into  its  world.

information,  write  YOUR  OWN  definition  of  each  word.
