SUM GOOD NEWS

Greetings to our SUMC Members and Friends,

Years ago, novelist Charles Martin opened his Bible and began wrestling with a few

fundamental questions. He asked, “What if every single word of Scripture is absolutely true

and I can trust it? How do I respond? Something in me should change, but what? How?” His

book, “What If It’s True”, is the result of that exploration.

I have mentioned to you recently that I have embarked on a new journey of faith, a much

deeper journey of introspection in looking at how I live and if I am truly living for God

first—You know, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things

will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33). Or how about, “I have been crucified with Christ. It is

no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by

faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)

Charles Martin in his book asks, “What if Jesus really is who He says He is? What if the King of the universe is speaking directly to me through the words of His book? What if what He says is more true than my circumstances? Than what my eyes see and my ears hear? And if His Word is true, how do I respond? Something in me should change, but what? How? Because if this story is true, then the King of all kings, the infinite God who spoke the Milky Way and me into existence — because He loves me deeply — stepped off His throne and em-barked on a rescue mission to save and deliver a self-centered slave like me. What kind of king does that?”

I have shared with you many times lately that in reading this

book I have developed a new and deepened hunger to once

again open the pages of my Bible and dig deeper into the

stories of Jesus. But it goes further than even that. I must

confess in recent years I really haven’t given attention in

reading the whole Bible. Yes, if I was doing a sermon or series

on Old Testament subject(s) I would selectively read those

scriptures. But like many pastors I have found myself focusing

my attention on the Gospels and Epistles.

September is the time of year when we as pastors and we as a

congregation begin setting goals, visions, and dreams for the

upcoming church year. It is a time in which so many of our

friends return from their summer trips to cooler climates. And

so, as we begin to discern the direction God is leading us to go,

I would like to challenge all of us to contemplate the following

question—A question posed in Martin’s book, a question that

has deepened my commitment to truly seek to live God’s

word:

“How would we behave differently if we lived like the Word of

God, and everything Jesus ever said and did in the Bible is true?

What would change?”

Join me as we enter a time of discernment and discovery as

we develop the goals, visions, and dreams God has for us here

together at Sedona UMC. Pick up God’s holy word and see

what God is saying to you.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Fred

Handbell Refurbishment Fundraiser

I have enjoyed working with your handbell choir since 2016. At the begin-ning many of the handbells started breaking springs which I replaced. Handbells need maintenance like your car or any musical instrument and they should be serviced every 8 to 10 years. Yet ours have never been serviced. SUMC was blessed to have the bells donated as a used set of handbells in the 1980s.

Besides the springs breaking, the axels are coming loose and the yoke falls out of the bell. Some handles show wear and tear and are difficult to use in a belltree. Extra brackets are needed so the casting doesn’t come in contact with the bell below it. Many of the handbells need adjustment often because they don’t hold like they should, making them more difficult to ring, or too easy, which affects dynamics.

We are asking you to prayerfully show your support of our Handbell Ministry. We have 50 handbells to refurbish and are asking for donations of $130 to cover the cost of refurbishing one handbell. On Sunday, September 15th a display will be set up where you can view a picture of the inside of a handbell. Except for the bell casting, every part will be replaced in the refurbishing: handle, hand guard, yoke assembly, clapper, clapper shaft, stop nuts, wash-ers, springs, axel and spacers. In addition, we will receive a lifetime warranty on the casting.

At the display you will be able to designate your donation as you wish:

You may also remain anonymous.

Please support your Bell Rock Ringers. Your church council has unanimously approved this needed fundraiser. The plan is to send them to Schulmerich after Christmas and have them back in about 4 or 5 weeks. Please help us achieve this goal and ensure the “bells” continue to make a joyful noise for years to come.

Blessings & Thanks,

Bob Martin

The Good Book Nook

The Good Book Nook is highlighting Christian Education for the month of September. To assist in the study of God's Word, the church library provides a large selection of bibles, reference material, church history, fiction and non-fiction, biographies, books on spiritual growth, devotion-als, children's books, as well as family-friendly DVDs and inspirational music CDs.

The library is seeking new people to serve on our ministry team. Join us...the more the merrier!

The church library is also asking for dona-tions of gently used books to add to the library inventory or to sell at the book sale in December. A donation box is located inside the library. The Good Book Nook, located on the second floor, is open at all times and we have library team members to assist you for half an hour before and after Sunday services. Stop by and “check us out”.

Paul Asher is a talented reporter who is having a crisis of faith. He once believed in God, but a visit to war-torn Afghanistan changed all that. He now questions every-thing he was taught about religion. Struggling with a crumbling marriage and battling emotions and thoughts from seeing soldiers die, what will it take to rescue him? Perhaps an interview with the Almighty. That's exactly what Paul gets: three sit-down interviews with God, 30 minutes apiece. Will it help?

The Joys of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

By Judy Williams, ESOL Tutor

I have only been a member of the ESOL group for less than a year, but what joys I have experi-enced in that time! When my first student, Rosa, was assigned to me, we had an instant connection. After a short while, she had to return to Mexico to renew her Visa, but in that time, my daughter, (who speaks some Spanish), and I met and dined with her husband, son and visiting mother. While Rosa was away, I was assigned another student, Lisa, and we also became close friends.

Since my two students display different levels of speaking ability, I have opted to meet with them separately- one during the day and the other on Tuesday nights at Sedona United Methodist Church. [ESOL classes are held every Tuesday at SUMC from 6—8 pm.]

After many heartaches with the renting situation in Sedona, two friends and I enabled Rosa and her family to finally establish a home here and I derived much satisfaction on seeing that come about.

Because of personal problems, Lisa recently told me she needed to take a break and I explained that after missing three classes, a student is welcome to return, but would be assigned another teacher at that point. Upon hearing this, she elected to return to classes to be able to continue with me.

The students in this class are so hard working --jobs during the day, raising families, personal issues--but they still make the time to learn our language, trying to assimilate, and make a better life for themselves and their fami-lies. I surely do commend them and in the process, personally, I have been truly blessed. [If you’d like to be apart of this program, please see the church office.]

Justa Center – The Return to Home by East/West District | Aug 20, 2019 (Reprint from the West District Newsletter)

Justa Center has always been a ministry of love for Desert Southwest Conference of the United Methodist Church. You were the first to see the crisis of homelessness among seniors and the first to respond. Together, we have helped over 6,000 seniors in their journey back to home.

The need has grown exponentially – doubling every four years. Justa Center met that need, but reached a point where we needed help to keep going. Thanks to the recent article in the Arizona Republic by Laurie Roberts – the Valley has responded with help and hope! Our community learned how the crisis of home-less seniors has grown by 98% in just one year. After meeting members who have successfully returned to housing and those still on the journey, she shared the challenge we were facing with limited resources. The community has responded with support, ideas, and resources to help us serve our seniors. Community leaders have recognized that Justa Center is unique, not just in the Valley, but in the nation, and are committed to supporting Justa Center into the future. Today’s challenges are the foundation for Justa Center to be more effective, serve more seniors, and continue to provide the essential services that support homeless seniors while on the path to home. We are better together; your prayers and help are needed. The church has provided much needed resources, volunteers, and community advocates. In the first six months of 2019, 170 seniors moved out of shelters, cars, and off the streets into housing. The Ambassadors, volunteers who visit over 300 seniors every month, are helping seniors remain in housing through friendship, support, and trusted advice. However, over 500 seniors came to Justa Center for the first time this year and nearly 50% of them have

never been homeless before. It is tragic, frightening, and a shame to our community. Without Justa, they

would die on the streets. Thank you for helping us help them!

Join the UMOM New Day Center for their Eleventh Annual Walk the Walk to End Homelessness on Saturday, September 21 at the Phoenix Zoo from 6-9 AM. This family friendly event aims to raise awareness and funds for families, single women and youth experiencing homelessness while also attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the number of people participating in a 1k in flip flops! For more info and to register your team, go to umom.org/walk. SUMC is looking for ways to partner with UMOM in the near future! Watch for details.

Our CLM members walked through the Rehab and the Memory Wards to announce our Service and assist those who chose to join us to the Dining Room location. Ben Sutter conducted the Service, Laurie Rathburn played the piano for our songs, and we served Communion for the attendees. After the Service, several CLM members proceeded to Sedona Winds Assisted Living to serve Communion to some of the residents there.

Please note that the September Haven Of Sedona Service will be one week later than normal (on Sunday, Sept 8), because of the Labor Day Holiday.

WELLNESS NOTES

September 2019

STROKE...What You Need to Know

Stroke is the 2nd most common cause of brain damage (after Alzheimer's Disease) and the 3rd most

common cause of death (after heart attack and cancer).

Stroke is caused by blockage of arterial blood to the brain due to a clot or hardening of the arteries

(atherosclerosis). Rupture of the arteries (aneurysm, blunt or penetrating trauma) is the other cause.

85% of non-lethal strokes are ISCHEMIC, meaning the artery is partially blocked. Decrease in arterial

blood flow results, and that part of the brain is damaged!!!!! The remainder of strokes are HEMORR-

HAGIC, meaning active bleeding in or around the brain.

Common symptoms of an ISCHEMIC STROKE are: WEAKNESS or NUMBNESS on one side of the body,

SLURRED SPEECH, MENTAL CONFUSION, VISUAL LOSS or DISTURBANCE, or SUDDEN and SEVERE HEAD-

ACHE.

Stroke Risk can be reduced by controlling high blood pressure, treating low blood pressure (blood loss

from all causes), keeping your pulse in normal range (>60, <+/-120-140). A pulse <40 is too SLOW. A

pacemaker is often prescribed for these patients. Cholesterol management, an 81mg Baby Aspirin daily

and a well balanced diet (avoiding processed foods) could save your life. Baby Aspirin should not be taken

if you have a "bleeding tendency"! Your Primary Care Provider should approve this regimen, along with

exercise tailored to your physical ability. See him/her before proceeding with these recommendations—
