Life Lessons from Favorite Literature Elementary school teachers are accustomed to helping their students formulate a picture of the world. A popular vehicle teachers traditionally use to support their classroom instruction is some version of a story time. The concept of teachable moments in elementary school focuses substantially on great works of children's literature. As these moments arise in the classroom you can pull from the shelf (or from the library) the story that will support teaching the lesson of sharing, kindness, courage, trust or other aspects of good character. The following list of stories range from the ancient to modern favorites of early grade teachers. Many teachers already have these stories in their classroom. The great advantage of the list is having them classified according to the trait exemplified in the stories. They are referenced according to the general headings of the four targeted character traits of Respect,Responsibility, Honesty, Motivation and related qualities. As these stories help to create lasting images in the students minds, the county is developing a common vocabulary for character instruction. Student understanding of good character will translate to each successive grade level, and parents and teachers who will come to work with students will have a vehicle to carry on the lessons you have begun. 1

Life Lessons from Favorite Literature

Elementary school teachers are accustomed to helping their students formulate a picture of the world.
