Lifting beams most often have a single lifting eye at the top with two or more attachment points at the bottom of the beam. This configuration requires the beam to be much stronger and heavier than a spreader. Spreaders most often have two attachment points on top and two at the bottom, which allows the spreader to be lighter weight and still lift a substantial amount of weight in comparison to a comparable beam. Spreader bars are ideal where headroom is not limited. They add stability to the lift and are available with wire rope, chain and high performance fiber slings for top rigging. As the weight is applied to the bottom of the spreader, the top rigging counter balances the pull allowing for using lighter weight devices. Adjustable lifting beams have multiple or adjusting lifting points. This facilitates the ability to handle both wide and unbalanced loads. Generally these beams are used in tight or low headroom situations. Coordinated Wire Rope and Coordinated Equipment carry both type lifting devices in multiple lengths and capacities in new, used and surplus condition. Many of these items are also available for short and long term rent.

SECTION 12

Lifting & Spreader Beams

Lifting beams and spreader bars are below the hook equipment that facilitates safe lifting by spreading the attachment points and allowing for better sling angles. Even though both are used for lifting, lifting beams and spreader bars are quite different in concept and design.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has developed standards that apply specifically to devices like spreaders and beams. ASME B30.20 provides detailed information on the classifications, marking, construction, installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and operation of below the hook lifting devices. ASME BTH-1 provides detailed information on the design criteria of below the hook lifting devices.

ASME B30.9 provides detailed information on the fabrication, markings, usage, inspection, and maintenance of lifting slings. These standards serve as a guide to government authorities, manufacturers, purchasers and users of lifting devices.
