Advanced Placement (AP) Program at Argyle Secondary and Handsworth Secondary

Students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses get an enriching, engaging learning experience with the rigors of college/university level studies within the support of a high school environment. Students taking AP courses demonstrate to post-secondary admissions officers that they have sought out an educational experience that will prepare them for success at college/ university and beyond.

Each AP course includes an optional college/university level exam developed and scored by the College Board. The exception to these exams is within the Studio Art stream, which requires the submission of a portfolio of student work. A supplemental exam fee applies to Advanced Placement courses.

Students who meet the AP exam requirements at the post-secondary institution they attend can potentially earn an extra 4 credits towards their post-secondary transcript and may be able to enrol directly into the second year course. AP exam scores are recognized by SFU, UBC, most universities and colleges across Canada, and most universities and colleges in the US and in over 60 countries worldwide.

Students should check with their school counsellor to learn more about Advanced Placement courses.

Performance Learning Program at Seycove Secondary

PLP is an academically rigorous mainstream magnet program for learners in grades 8 to 12 who seek a challenging, enriching, and supportive learning environment.

With a focus on deeper learning, students master core academic content, think critically to solve complex problems, work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and develop academic and growth mindsets.

PLP teaches kids about the world and how it works, empowering them to make it a better place. Students are prepared for post-secondary education and workplace success by organizing instruction through three lenses:

1. Inquiry and Project-Based Learning

For PLP students, school isn’t rehearsal for real life — it is real life. Project-based learning emphasizes learning as a process, allowing students to develop the skills necessary to become thoughtful, engaged citizens.

2. Technology for Learning Student use of a personal iPad device allows learning tasks to be redefined. Technology is embedded meaningfully and authentically throughout PLP, redefining learning in previously inconceivable ways.

3. Experiential Learning Beyond School Walls

Students live in the real world — PLP students learn there too. Field schools are tightly integrated with student inquiry and curriculum and provide learning experiences for students that would otherwise be unavailable to them. PLP students work hard, take risks, and learn how to learn.

Semester System at Sutherland Secondary

What students say: Sutherland Secondary is the only secondary school in the District and on the North Shore that uses the semester system in order to deliver an educational program to students. In comparison to a linear schedule, where students take their entire course load over ten months, a semester schedule breaks the year into two equal terms, allowing students to focus on a reduced number of courses that are taken daily.

Only 4 courses to worry about at one time Less stress Focused/concentrated learning Fewer tests and projects at one time Easier to manage course workload Like the switch in courses for the second semester – change is fresh I can work ahead in a subject that interests me Consistency – four courses each and every day I get to know my classmates and teachers faster and better because I see them everyday Easier to participate in sports and extracurricular activities knowing that I only have 4 courses to worry about instead of 8 Opportunities to graduate earlier Classes can be made up in the next semester – I won’t fall behind I can do Work Experience or an Apprenticeship program or an ACE-IT program and not miss course work There is less stress if I have a job

The semester system may be a preferred choice for students based on their learning style and educational goals. It is beneficial for students who prefer to focus on a limited number of courses. Many students find it easier to stay organized with a fewer number of courses at one time.

Young Entrepreneurship and Leadership Launchpad (YELL) at Sutherland Secondary School and Windsor Secondary School

This course is for students interested in technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation, or those just interested in learning more about how the world works and how to put their ideas into action. This course is delivered in partnership with YELL Canada, a registered Canadian charity inspiring entrepreneurial thinking in youth across Canada, partnering with schools to deliver real-world programming in the classroom.

In this course students will hear from more than a dozen leaders in their community, featuring Q&A opportunities to ask them the questions they want answered - how did they get to where they are today? Knowing what they know now, what advice would they give their younger self? What is their biggest regret? Biggest accomplishment? Or any other question they want to ask them! Their answers will often surprise.

Students will learn how to develop and evaluate a business, build a personal network of business contacts, hone their creative and critical thinking, apply teamwork skills, and put their presentation skills to the test. The applied experience students gain through the project in this course will be extremely valuable as they apply to university and seek out a job. During the final half of this course, teams of students will

be matched with a mentor to guide them through the process of coming up with an innovative and world- changing business concept, and they will compete with students across the province in a venture competition hosted by YELL. Topics covered include the business model canvas, design thinking, lean entrepreneurship, how to make a business pitch, finance and venture capital, and much more.

This course is based on top-quality university entrepreneurship programs as well as best practices from Silicon Valley. 84% of students who have taken YELL say they made 1 or more connections with a mentor or leader that they plan on continuing to stay in touch with and 81% say they are more confident in finding or creating a career that aligns with their purpose and passion.
