Australian International School Hong Kong Secondary Activity Week 2020

1. Rationale

The Secondary Activity Week Program is a compulsory program of extra curricula learning which involves students in courses that are additional to regular classroom learning. Courses take advantage of our location in South East Asia and the skills and experience of staff members.

During Term 1 the Secondary Activity Week Program provides an off-campus learning experience designed to develop the individual, his/her social skills and the community interaction. In some grades, it provides students with an opportunity to travel to neighbouring countries and experience the local culture and engage in socio-cultural service activities.

Students who experience financial hardship which may limit their participation in the program may apply to the Head of School for assistance.

Year 10-12 (compulsory) Elective courses in the senior years are available to Years 10, 11, 12 combined, and students will select courses according to their interests, availability of places and program completion requirements. This needs to be done under the supervision of the student’s parents

The courses offered will be identified by their dominant mode of activities, either as: A courses – adventure, action, activity and skills C courses – understanding culture, undertaking creativity, inter-cultural perceptions, international learning S courses – service to a community, supplying work for the benefit of others, giving of oneself

Courses in each of the three areas will be offered both in Hong Kong and outside of Hong Kong.

Over the three year period of Years 10/11/12, a student will be expected to complete one activity in each area of Adventure – Understanding Culture – Service.

Some specially designed courses may satisfactorily cover two of the modes required.

Students may not repeat a course, including a more advanced certificate qualification, from a previously completed lower level course. (e.g. diving)

Graduation and reporting requirements:

By Year 12, the completion of three different, senior A-C-S courses in each of the areas of adventure, service and understanding culture will qualify for graduation.

• Courses, which cover more than one mode of activity, may allow for graduation provided courses arenot repeated.

• Students who complete less than three separate courses will receive a statement of attainment on theirschool report.

• Each separate course satisfactorily completed by a student will provide a Certificate of Completion.

• School reports will indicate Activity Week course completion for all students on the extra-curricularsection of the report.
