Second Sunday of Lent February 28, 2010 The LORD is my light and my salvation;

whom should I fear? — Psalm 27:1 ALL ABOUT CHANGE On this Second Sunday of Lent the scriptures remind us that when we have an encounter with our God, things are bound to change. In the first reading God tells Abram to raise his eyes to the sky, promising descendants as numerous as the stars. Abram’s act of faith in the Lord is sealed in covenant, forever changing the course of salvation history. In the Gospel story of the Transfiguration, always proclaimed on this Lenten Sunday, the Lord Jesus changes in appearance before the eyes of the apostles who, like Abram, raise their eyes to the spectacle in the sky. It is Saint Paul who brings it all together for us: “He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body” (Philippians 3:21). Lent is all about change, all about conversion. Let us cast our own eyes to heaven, awaiting that day when we will be changed—when we will share in Christ’s glory. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Second Sunday of Lent Page 4

Lent 2010

The Prophet Hosea invited the Chosen People to spend some time in the place where they first encountered the Love of God. The desert was where the people knew the intimacy of God’s presence. It was where they honeymooned with God. Married couples also try and return to the special places of their courtship and honeymoon.

There they celebrate their sacred covenants and they empty themselves of the demands of family, work and the cares of the world. During our Lenten journey we are emptied so we can be filled with God’s Love and Bounty. Lent allows us to unclutter our lives. Lent can be our “desert” or “honeymoon”, in tat we can re-establish our intimacy with God and celebrate our Sacred Covenant with Him. Reverend Gillespie, a retired Presbyterian minister, suggests that Lent is not so much fasting, but feasting on God’s Presence.

Fast from gossip; Feast on the Gospels. Fast from junk foods;

Feast on the Bread of Life. Fast from bad news;

Feast on “The Good News.” Fast from darkness; Feast on the Light.

Fast from the secular; Feast on the sacred. Fast from despair;

Feast on hope. Fast from revenge;

Feast on forgiveness. Fast from tears of sorrow;

Feast on tears of joy. Fast from getting; Feast on giving. Fast from horror; Feast on humor.

Fast from complexities; Feast on simplicities.

God Bless, Fr. Mike

Giggles: “So far today, God, I’ve done all right. I haven’t gossiped, haven’t lost my temper, haven’t been selfish, grumpy, nasty, or overindulgent. I’m really glad about that. “But in a few minutes, God, I’m going to get out of bed, and from then on I’m probably going to need a lot more help. ++++++++++++++++++++ Billy Graham told of a time early in his ministry when he arrived in a small town to preach a revival meeting. Wanting to mail a letter, he asked a young boy where the post office was. When the boy had told him, Dr. Graham thanked him and said, “If you’ll come to the church this evening, you can hear me give directions on how to get to heaven.” “I don’t think I’ll be there,” the boy replied. “You don’t even know how to get to the post office.”

Lenten Scripture Study With Contemplative Prayer

The readings of the Easter Vigil are some of the most powerful in the Lectionary, yet thy are

seldom read in their entirety. As a Lenten exercise, we will explore the seven readings from the Old Testament (which give an overview of Salvation History, and point to the Incarnation and Passion of Jesus, the Christ) a reading from Paul’s Letter to the Romans; and the Resurrection of Jesus according to Luke. The Evenings prayer and study are designed so that we might walk more closely with our Lord in this season of Lent. These Scripture sessions will be held in the chapel next session is on Thursday, March 4th Facilitator: Deacon Red Cheever BRING YOUR BIBLE!

Come and stay at my house today

Jesus, this Lent I am yearning to wear a Zacchaeus heart. I am wanting to hear you call my name just as you did his.

I am anxious to know that you are inviting yourself to my home. I am humbled, amazed, excited, and astounded, just as he was. But that is where the desire to wear a Zacchaeus heart stops, because I know what happens when you visit someone’s house. Conversations occur. Choices are presented. Changes happen. That’s because you look for more than dust when you come to visit and you talk about things more vital than the weather. You move into the heart’s dimension. You gaze deeply. You don’t just dwell. You interact. You activate. You dwell so lovingly that the truth cannot be resisted. This Lent help me to welcome you and yearn for your love. Give me a Zacchaeus heart that turns around and sees the truth. I need the gaze of your love to remind me of my truest self. I, too, need the strong call to make amends and start anew. Hurry, Jesus, come and stay at my house today. From Out of the Ordinary: Prayers, Poems, and Reflections for Every Season by Joyce Rupp (used with permission NCR)

Lenten Prayer Opportunities The spiritually and theology of Lent developed in the early church because of Baptism. It was the time of intense spiritual formation of the Catechumens for their Baptism. The early Baptized Church fasted and prayed in solidarity with these Catechumens and also for the Renewal of their own Baptismal commitment with Jesus. Teachings on and experiences of prayer will be offered to help us deepen our Baptismal Commitment. Sessions will be held in the Chapel. Next prayer Session on Guided Meditation is on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:00pm Facilitators: Sr. Eileen Mary O’Conner,RSM and Sr. Anita Minihane,RSM.
