25th& 26th February 2019
Background
In the recent past Intellectual Property has become an integral part of Global economy with
large implications in the international trade. Intellectual property Rights have been defined as
those ideas, inventions and creative expressions which are bestowed with the status of

intangible right. The main object behind intellectual property is to promote the progress of
science and technology, arts, literature and other creative works and to encourage and reward
creativity. There are several types of intellectual property rights granted like patent,
copyright, trademark, etc. intellectual property rights aim at safeguarding creators and other
producers of intellectual goods and services by granting them certain time-limited rights to
control the use made of those productions.
With the conclusion of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property
Rights(TRIPS) in World Trade Organization the protection and enforcement of IPRs was
enhanced. TRIPS agreement is considered as an important and most complete multilateral
agreement on intellectual property. It covers various areas of Intellectual Property and targets
at the complementary and firm standards of protection and providing for operative
enforcement at national and international level.
India being a signatory to the TRIPS Agreement had modified its legal regime on IPR in tune
with the commitments undertaken by them and many new legislations were also passed for
the protection of intellectual property rights to meet the obligations internationally. With the

SUMMARY OF THE EVENT
IPUnveil 2019 – An IPR Awareness Campaign
AIM
The aim of the 2-day event organised by Centre for Intellectual Property Research and
Advocacy (CIPRA) - Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad, on the 11th to 12
th February 2019
was to spread awareness amongst the students in the rapidly emerging domain of intellectual
property rights and to engage them in different activities to enhance their knowledge.
About IPUnveil 2019
CIPRA organised three events to achieve the objective of the event. Broadly, the events
organised were under the following heads:
AcademicIP – to engage in students with the academic aspect of intellectual property
rights,
iPeers – to enable students to engage in discussions with their peers in relation to
intellectual property rights, and encourage peer to peer learning,
CreativeIP – to stimulate the creativity amongst students and to engage them in the
creative domain of IPR.
iPeers
Through an in-depth discussion on the topic of IPR and its various aspects with
understanding of popular case studies, CIPRA members and attendees of the session were
able to understand the developments in IP laws in India and around the world. The session
was conducted at 3:00PM in the CIPRA cell room on the 11th
of February, 2019. The
participants and the cell members were able to co-educate one another, providing each other
with candid knowledge in the fields of Intellectual Property Rights.
AcademicIP
Workshop
A workshop was conducted on the topic “IPR and Artificial Intelligence” by Ekta Bahl,
Partner at Samvad Partners, Hyderabad and Nischali Varanasi, Senior Associate at Samvad
Partners, Hyderabad. It began at 1:00pm in the Convention Hall, with about 70 students
gathered for the session. The event was conducted unlike other conventional workshops, as
the session kept all the students on their feet and even got the CIPRA members involved in
activities relating to Artificial Intelligence. It was an informal talk and was very informative.
The speakers related the topics of AI and IPR and how essential it will be in future
technological developments.
VerBOSS
“For good ideas and true innovation, you need human interaction, conflict, argument and
debate.”
With this very spirit, CIPRA came up with the concept of VerBOSS, an intra-varsity debating
competition, for the students of 1st, 2
nd and 3
rd year of Symsiosis Law School, Hyderabad.
The second edition of debate competition was held on 12th of February, 2019 10:45AM
onwards. The motion of the debate was “Whether legislation should be enacted to protect
trade secrets?”
The participants of the competition were evaluated by Mr. G Vidyadhar Raghavan, Training
and Placement Officer at Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad and Mr. Hifajatali Sayyed,
Assistant Professor at Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad.
The competition accommodated 10 speakers where 5 speakers were “for” the motion
and the rest were “against” the motion. Each speaker was given a total time of 4
minutes to present their arguments, and one minute for rebuttal.
The best speaker “for” and “against” the motion were presented with a certificate
along with a cash prize.
The atmosphere in the room was absolutely emphatic, as a debate should be.
Trademark Filing Competition
The „Trademark Filing competition‟ was the first of its kind which was organized by CIPRA
under AcademicIP. This competition was held in the CIPRA Cell Room and was adjudged by
Ms. Ekta Bahl and Ms. Nishchali.
Briefing Session
The participants were also briefed regarding the nature of the competition, the trademark law
and the procedure of trademark filing on the 9th of February.
Structure of the Competiton
The Competition had two rounds namely,
(i) Written Submissions:
The teams had to fill the actual form for Trademark filing and adhere to the procedures
thereby. This particular round also acted as a screening round to select limited teams for the
Oral Submissions round. Moreover, the purpose behind making the participanst fill in the
details in the actual form of Trademark Filing was to give them an idea as to the practical
aspect of it and various other know-hows. The first round witnesses an active participation
from several teams.
10 teams were selected for the second round which was the „Oral Submissions‟ Round on the
basis of their written submissions. The teams were assigned one side each viz. applicant and
opposition through draw of lots which took place one day before the Competition i.e. on 11th
February.
(ii) Oral Submissions
The Oral Submissions were before the two guest Judges namely Ms. Ekta Bahl and Ms.
Nishachali. Each side viz. applicant and opposition were given a time period of 10 minutes to
make their arguments. Hence, each round lasted for 20 minutes and there were 5 such rounds.
The participants were marked on the basis of their research, their understanding of IP law,
their application of the laws, etc.
CreativeIP
Triptych: An Innovative Grid
Team CIPRA embraces the value of creativity and its application everywhere. Keeping this in
mind, we came up with a unique amalgamation of writing, photography and designing. The
event was conducted on the 11th
of February 2019 10:30 AM onwards in the CIPRA Cell
Room. Creative IP was an opportunity for every student who was in need of a platform to
showcase creativity and art. Through Triptych, students were expected to come up with an
innovative grid that comprised of three art forms, namely, writing, designing and
photography.
The students, in a team of three, were first given time individually, and then time to work
together to come up with a presentation for the judge. Students were allotted a theme on the
spot in the form of a poem by the members of team CIPRA. The event was judged by Mr.
Amish, Assistant Professor at Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad.
Writing Round:
In this round, the writers from each team had to prepare a write-up of their interpretations
from the theme of the competition.
Photography Round:
In this round the photographers represented the idea of the writer and their interpretations
through a photo that they had to click from the campus.
Designing Round:
In this round the designer with their art had to put both the above works together to form a
piece that presents the idea of their team members.
And finally, the team members had to present their unique idea to the Judge and CIPRA
members. The judging criterion was purely based on creativity, relevance and content. The
aim of the event was to assess the level of creativity reflecting in the final product, the ability
of team members to coordinate and finally, the degree of free expression involved.

Through this visit the members of the center created impact on school students. They taught
them their rights and duties which is very essential. The views of the children were also asked
and they also enquired about the facilities provided to them. They experienced the sense of
freshness and learnt a lot of things practically, which is not possible through books.
Team Legal Aid is very thankful to the Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad for providing us an
opportunity to conduct school visit in the process of ensuring justice to all.

The second Peer to Peer Session for the semester by The Centre for Specialisation in
Business and Innovation was conducted on 4th February, 2018 at the Assembly Hall at 6.00
pm. The session was conducted in the format of an informal talk and focussed on the election
routes and policies of Major Indian states. The speaker was Chakradhar Reddy of 2016-21
batch. The session saw an attendance of 30-40 students who actively participated in the
discussions which followed. The audience were served with coffee and cookies. Also, a
certificate will be provided for their participation.
The speaker was chosen based on his voluntary interest. The session saw active participation
from all the batches. The students were required to read about the various roadmaps followed
by political parties. Chakradhar began the discussion by giving a brief of total number of
seats and constituencies in India. The discussion then turned towards the involvement of
actors in politics and the impact it had on the vote bank. The footing of major National
Political parties was discussed on a state to state basis.
Also, the students came forward with their own personal experiences and anecdotes which
introduced an element of interest among the audience. Ananya voiced her views about
politics in the Southern states. Ryan discussed about the split of parties and working class in
West Bengal. Various topics such as the Gujarat Patil Agitation, Strongholds of Modi, The
CBI-West Bengal Police clash etc were brought to light .
The aim of the session was to bring to light the actual working of politics which was
influenced by religious and regional difference of opinion. The students provided the Centre
with valuable and constructive feedback. The informal atmosphere helped the students voice
their views without the fear of documentation and agitation. Thus, the session provided a free
platform for the exchange of political beliefs. In conclusion, the event was pleasant,
interesting and achieved the objective of Peer to Peer learning.
The centre plans to conduct many more P2P sessions covering various topics and aspects in
the future.
