Foreword

The Audi R8 LMS Cup has entered a new era with the fifth season of

the first one-make series from the brand with Four Rings. Established

in 2012, the series has grown in both scope and stature across the

region, with the competition continuing to intensify year-on-year.

The Audi R8 LMS Cup offers a platform for motorsport enthusiasts

to compete in one of the most prestigious and competitive GT

championships in Asia, racing wheel-to-wheel with fellow privateers

as well as high-profile professional drivers. The 2016 season

features a wide range of established drivers racing alongside an

exciting mix of young, passionate new entrants, making it the

youngest, most competitive line-up of drivers in the series so far.

The new season will also mark the debut of the next generation

Audi R8 LMS race car – a vehicle designed and developed specifically

for motorsport, and one that shares more than half of its technical

base with the Audi R8 production car.

This season, we would also like to offer a warm welcome to the

Cup’s two new service teams, Phoenix Racing Asia and KCMG, and

a warm welcome back to long-time series service partner Absolute

Racing. The three service teams will add an intriguing dynamic to the

competition as the Audi R8 LMS Cup’s 2016 season unfolds.

Over the years, Audi Sport customer racing Asia has also increased its

reach, breaking down geographical barriers in motorsport across the

globe. This year, the all-Asian Audi entry of Shaun Thong, Marchy Lee,

Alex Yoong and Cheng Congfu return to the 24 Hours Nürburgring,

following their impressive 12th place finish from over 150 entries

in 2015. Last year, the first participant in the Audi Sport customer

racing Asia young driver development programme, Shaun Thong, was

also entered into the Audi Sport TT Cup for a full season.

Sporty, progressive and sophisticated – motorsport is in the Audi

DNA. In 2016, Audi Sport customer racing Asia will continue to

further develop motorsport in the region with action packed events

across the continent and the most attractive race packages for Asian

motorsport aficionados.

We wish all of our drivers and teams the very best of luck for the

2016 season and would like to thank our partners, fans and media

friends for their continued support.

Thank you and enjoy the season!

Audi R8 LMS Cup 2016 season

The 2016 season of the Audi R8 LMS Cup is set to be its most competitive yet. Highlights of the new season include the new Audi R8 LMS race car, the strongest ever international line-up in Cup history, a series debut for a challenging new track, and the addition of Phoenix Racing Asia and KCMG, who join Absolute Racing as new service teams from this season.

The 12-round championship will be held over six pan-Asian weekends, coming full circle to conclude back in Shanghai, where the sprint series will join the Audi Sport motorsport family for the penultimate round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

The new season’s driver line-up of returning stars, new additions and competitive amateurs is one of the most impressive in Cup history. Malaysia’s Alex Yoong of Audi TEDA Racing Team returns in the hope of completing an unprecedented hat trick of Audi R8 LMS Cup titles. Returning to challenge him are 2015 runner-up, Chinese driver Cheng Congfu of FAW-VW Audi Racing Team, 2012 champion Marchy Lee of Audi Hong Kong Team, India’s Aditya Patel of the Audi R8 LMS Cup

Team and Audi Korea’s K.O. You. Swiss GT specialist Rahel Frey of Castrol Racing Team also returns to the Cup for a third full season, strengthening its international credentials. Joining the championship battle are new exciting, young drivers, including three champions from Europe: Martin Rump, winner of Formula Masters China Series’ 2015 season, Jan Kisiel, the 2015 Audi Sport TT Cup champion, and Alessio Picariello, the 2013 ADAC Formel Masters champion. Yuichi Nakayama from Japan is another new series addition, along with the youngest driver in Audi R8 LMS Cup history, Hong Kong’s Jasper Thong. Once again, the Cup provides a highly competitive platform for proven professionals, exciting new talents and ambitious privateers to race head-to-head.

The second-generation Audi R8 LMS race car makes its series debut at the 2016 season’s opening weekend at the Shanghai International Circuit. Up to 15 of the 18 entries in the Cup’s 2016 season opener will race the all-new Audi R8 LMS. A limited number of previous generation Cup cars will compete for the new Masters Cup title this season.

The Audi R8 LMS Cup, the first brand cup of AUDI AG, was founded in China in 2012 and plays a leading role in the development of motorsport in Asia. The sprint race championship has competed across the region’s premier circuits, making its debut in Malaysia, South Korea and at the Macau Grand Prix in 2013; Japan and Abu Dhabi in 2014; and Taiwan in 2015. 2016 will see the Cup conquer new challenges as it makes its first appearance in Thailand on the famed Chang International Circuit in Buriram.

The Audi R8 LMS Cup is the optimum showcase for Audi lightweight technology, the benefits of which are translated directly to the customer as improved efficiency. The series is part of the Audi Sport customer racing Asia programme and is organized by Audi China.

The tracks

Chang International Circuit

Track length: 4.5 km No. of turns: 12

Direction: Clockwise

The Chang International Circuit was opened in 2014, and is the first FIA

Grade 1 and FIM Grade A circuit in Thailand. Designed by Hermann Tilke, the

entire track can be seen from the main 50,000-seat grandstand. Even more

impressive is the fact that the track has two of Tilke’s famed long straight

sections (one of which is 1km in length), as well as a more compact sections

in front of the grandstand. In 2016, the Audi R8 LMS Cup makes its debut

at the Chang International Circuit, racing in Thailand for the first time in the

series’ five-year history.

Home of the Formula 1 Malaysian Grand Prix, the Sepang International

Circuit features two long straights, which are joined by a hairpin that forms

the track’s final corner. Also designed by Hermann Tilke, the track combines

long straights and varied low, medium and high-speed turns. Coupled with

the searing heat and humidity, racing at Sepang always presents a unique

challenge.

The venue of the Formula 1 Korean Grand Prix from 2010 to 2013, the Korea

International Circuit is located 400 km south of Seoul, near the port city

of Mokpo and is the country’s first international racing circuit. Designed by

Hermann Tilke, this counter-clockwise circuit features a 1.2 km straight. The

facility incorporates elements of Korean design, including the grandstand

which resembles the eaves of ‘hanoks’, the traditional Korean styled houses.

Shanghai International Circuit

Length: 5.5 km No. of turns: 16

Direction: Clockwise

Home to China’s Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Shanghai International Circuit was

opened in 2004. Designed by Hermann Tilke, the track layout was inspired

by the Chinese character “shang” (上 ), the first character in the city’s name,

which means “above” or “ascend”. This wide and smooth track features

a technically challenging layout – including Tilke’s trademark long, back

straight followed by a hairpin turn – and several elevation changes.

2015 season race winners: Alex Yoong (Round 12) & Aditya Patel (Round 13).

Audi R8 LMS (first generation Cup car) Audi Sport customer racing Asia offers a diverse range of

opportunities to motorsport enthusiasts, from sports car experiences

and licensing courses, to participation in racing events in Asia and

Europe. Part of Audi China, Audi Sport customer racing Asia builds

on the global Audi customer racing programme. A cornerstone of the

programme is to give ambitious privateers and Audi enthusiasts the

opportunity to compete in international-standard motorsport series

against renowned professional talents.

Launched alongside the Audi R8 LMS Cup in 2012, Audi Sport

customer racing Asia plays a pioneering role in the development of

Asian motorsport; in addition to the Audi R8 LMS Cup, the programme

supports entries in selected regional series and races, including the

GT Asia Series, the Sepang 12 Hours, and the Macau Grand Prix. Audi

Sport customer racing Asia entered the full-Asian team of Shaun

Thong, Marchy Lee, Alex Yoong and Cheng Congfu in the 24 Hours

Nürburgring in May 2016, following their impressive 12th place

finish in 2015. Its European programme in 2015 also included Shaun

Thong’s season-long entry in the new Audi Sport TT Cup. Along with

Marchy Lee and Markus Winkelhock, Thong also raced in the Blancpain

Endurance Series with Phoenix Racing.

In 2014, Thong was announced as the brand’s first ever participant

in its Young Driver Development Programme in Asia. The programme

is part of its commitment to developing the region’s fledging talents

and, through it, Thong has received exclusive benefits including GT3

coaching and training, along with opportunities to race in high-profile

events in both Europe and Asia.

In 2016, Audi has also stepped up its support for Formula Masters

China Series (FMCS) – the region’s leading junior single-seater series.

Notable performances in FMCS have led to potential opportunities in

the Audi R8 LMS Cup. The latest recipients of this are Martin Rump,

the 2015 FMCS champion, and fellow contender Alessio Picariello,

both of whom will race for the Audi R8 LMS Cup in its 2016 season.

Audi motorsport

Audi positions itself as the sportiest manufacturer in the premium segment and has a perfect basis to do so: motorsport. Sportiness, advanced

technology and emotional design are the main elements accounting for the success of the Audi brand. In 2015, Audi presented the second generation

of the Audi R8 LMS that had instant wins at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring and a one-two-three win at the Sepang 12 Hours. Today’s success

builds upon a long legacy, as racing has always been in the genes of the Audi brand.

Early success

The motorsport history of Audi began more than 100 years ago with the

Audi Type C – the “Alpine conquerer” – winning the Austrian Alpine Run

between 1911 and 1914. In the 1930s, Audi achieved further success

with the iconic Auto Union Grand Prix car, the “Silver Arrow”, which

clinched titles around the world with legendary drivers including Bernd

Rosemeyer. The “Silver Arrow” also broke speed records, reaching 320

km/h on an Italian autostrada in 1935.

The motorsport history of AUDI AG began with the Audi quattro

The commanding victories, plus two manufacturers’ and two drivers’

titles achieved with the ‘original quattro’ in the World Rally Championship

between 1982 and 1984, were a key factor in producing the success of

quattro drive in the marketplace. Audi then established quattro drive in

circuit racing as well: 1996 saw the Audi A4 quattro clinch championship

titles in seven countries. In 2012, the all-wheel drive system returned to

the race track as the e-tron quattro.

Audi R8, most successful present-day Le Mans sports car

In its 1999 debut at Le Mans, the world’s toughest endurance race,

Audi, on clinching third place, instantly managed the leap onto the

winners’ podium. In the following years, the Audi R8 was in a class

of its own. From 2000 to 2002, Audi achieved a historic hat-trick,

not least thanks to debuting TFSI technology that subsequently

made its way into production technology. 2004 and 2005 saw

customer teams score two further overall victories for Audi. The R8

secured its place in motorsport history with a total of 63 victories

in 80 sports car races.

Title wins following return to DTM

Following Laurent Aiello’s 2002 victory in the Abt-Audi TT-R, Audi

returned to the DTM with a factory commitment in 2004 and, with

Mattias Ekström, instantly clinched the title. The Swede triumphed

again in 2007, while in 2008 and 2009, Timo Scheider won, making

Audi the first – and so far only – automobile manufacturer in DTM

history to have achieved a title hat-trick. Martin Tomczyk completed

the success story of the Audi A4 DTM in the 2011 season with

another title win – the fifth one in total for the Audi A4 DTM. In

2013, Mike Rockenfeller in the Audi RS 5 DTM claimed the ninth DTM

title in total for Audi.

Audi motorsport

Pioneering achievements with TDI technology

With TDI technology, Audi demonstrated a pioneering

achievement, again proving ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’

in the process. In 2006, the Audi R10 TDI featuring a

new concept was the first-ever car with diesel power

to triumph in the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours. 2007

and 2008 again saw Audi win at Le Mans with the R10

TDI. In addition, Audi won the American Le Mans Series

three times in succession with the diesel-powered

sports car, plus, in 2008, the Le Mans Series in Europe.

With the R15 TDI, Audi celebrated a one-two-three

result in the fastest Le Mans race of all time in 2010,

as well as setting a new distance record that has not

been broken to date. In 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014,

Audi TDI Power again won at Le Mans, plus in 2014, the

brand celebrated its 13th victory in only 16 races it had

participated in. Audi has been demonstrating ‘Vorsprung

durch Technik’ in terms of energy efficiency as well,

having reduced diesel consumption by 40 percent ever

since the TDI era began in racing in 2006.

First hybrid winner at Le Mans

On clinching the first victory of a hybrid race car in the Le Mans 24

Hours in 2012, Audi achieved another pioneering feat in the world’s

most important endurance race. Three times in succession (2012,

2013 and 2014), the Audi R18 e-tron quattro remained unbeaten

at Le Mans. Numerous other innovations such as Audi laser light

complement the brand’s pioneering prowess in technology. In

addition, Audi won the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC)

with the hybrid sports car two consecutive times, in 2012 and 2013.

GT racing as third pillar

In the R8 LMS, Audi, in 2009, developed a race car specifically for use

in customer racing for the first time. The GT3 sports car, more than

50 percent of which consists of production components, instantly

impressed. More than 130 race cars were delivered to customers by

the beginning of 2015. In addition to 28 championship titles around

the world, the track record of the R8 LMS reflects eight overall

victories in iconic 24-hour races such as those at the Nürburgring

and at Spa-Francorchamps, plus three successes in 12-hour races. In

March 2015, Audi presented the second generation of the successful

GT3 sports car that, only two months later, won the 24-hour race at

the Nürburgring and later that year, saw a one-two-three win in the

12-hour race in Sepang.

Motorsport benefits Audi customers

Motorsport at Audi is always undertaken with consideration for our customers. Audi uses the race track as a test centre for new technologies.

Race car development and series production benefit from each other in many areas, including hybrid drives, engine downsizing, fuel injection

technology and turbocharger design.

Light technology

In 2014, for the first time, Audi drove at Le Mans with laser lights and

a special edition Audi R8 LMX, a road model with laser lights, followed

shortly. Lights are an important safety factor and are often tested in

motorsport. The Audi R18 TDI, for example, was the first Le Mans sports

car with full LED headlights.

Ultra lightweight

Ultra lightweight aluminium suspension components were tested by Audi

in rallying in the 1980s, and have since played a significant role in the

reduction of fuel consumption in road cars. For 20 years, the lightweight

Audi Space Frame (ASF) has set manufacturing standards. The Audi R8

LMS racing car’s aluminium chassis and the road going Audi R8 originate

from the same production. Carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) have

also found their way from motorsport into series production.

Season Guide 2
