Across Queensland, Camerata has imagined programs that bring communities together to

share in musical experiences. From activities that inspire young people, to performances in

QPAC’s Concert Hall, from entertaining residents in aged care, to encouraging pathways for

artists to explore the world around them – Camerata offers a creative future where music is

a part of everyday life for all.

Sara Macliver (soprano) opens the season in a concert of divine song, Melbourne Symphony

Orchestra violinists Sarah and Monica Curro make a triumphant return home, while Tama

Matheson joins us for the next new theatre-concert collaboration.

Camerata will again take to the road through regional Queensland with support from the Tim

Fairfax Family Foundation. This tour provides an invaluable opportunity to meet audiences

and inspire the next generation of musicians, regardless of their geographic location.

We invite you to explore new and unearthed gems, celebrate the power of family and delight

in music and poetry that is testament to the human experience.

Whatever your location, join us, listen with us and above all, celebrate the joy of music.

WHAT TO EXPECTCamerata welcomes Sara Macliver, one of Australia’s most treasured singers. After a dreamy

entrée from Grainger, Sara’s artistry will be on display in Schumann’s intimate, A Woman’s

Love and Life depicting the emotional stages of a 19th century woman’s life, attributed to

the story of his own wife Clara whom he had just married. Britten’s brilliant and inspired set

of character pieces follows, and ranges from the most tender to laugh-out-loud moments

with virtuosity and passion that still challenge the finest chamber orchestras of today.

At the concert we reveal a mystery guest before concluding the evening with Sara in

Vivaldi’s tempestuous In furore that we are sure will bring the concert to an absolutely

thrilling conclusion.

Lawrence, Anna Colville. Cello: Nathan Smith. Double Bass: Marian Heckenberg.

What to expectEight Camerata Artistic Associates unearth a splendid selection of known and little-known

music. In this intimate concert you will be close enough to the musicians to see how they

draw the sound from their instruments, to witness their passion and to catch fleeting wry

smiles as they interact. Rossini’s String Sonata, so full of character, charm and witty musical

repartee, is like an imaginary mini opera in itself, while Edwards’s Veni Creator Spiritus from

1993 begins with a gentle chant, as if written thousands of years ago. The Octet by Romanian

composer Enescu, written at the age of 19, is brimming with youthful zest and ambition, with

its virtuosity palpable and its symphonic scope breath-taking. What better place to hear and

see Camerata at close range than in the surrounds of the recently refurbished Cremorne

Theatre QPAC, or up close in the intimate Empire Church Theatre.

What to expectNo sibling rivalry here! Brisbane-born sisters Monica and Sarah Curro make a welcome

return home to show their musical mettle. The program celebrates old and new, with

the iconic concerto affectionately known as the Bach Double and a stunning work

for two violins and strings by Richard Mills, played in the 70th birthday year of this

distinguished Toowoomba-born composer. Transfigured Night traces the romantic

story of two lovers taking in an evening walk, but even in their state of blissful rapture

one of them has a secret to reveal. It’s one of the most passionate, sensual and gripping

pieces in the entire string orchestra repertoire.

What to expectNot quite a concert, not quite a play, When The World Was Wide is a melding

of narrative, acting and concert music. It digs deep into the life and sparring

friendship of two of Australia’s most iconic poets and writers, Henry Lawson and

Banjo Paterson, drawing on atmospheric and evocative music to set the scene.

When the World Was Wide is the fifth collaboration between Camerata and

Tama Matheson. Audiences and critics continue to praise these adventurous,

artistic collaborations.

Orchestra. In 2009, Monica was invited as the only Australian to play in the World Orchestra

for Peace, and has since joined them regularly for concerts around the world. Monica has

appeared as soloist with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and recently premiered Stefan

VOLUME, now celebrating its 10th anniversary, showcases these works in thoroughly modern

venues to an ever-widening audience. Sarah hopes to continue this emotional and financial

commitment to her arts community.

Direct from concerts in Sydney and Melbourne, the world-class Orava Quartet proudly

returns with the work that became their namesake: Kilar’s Orawa. From classic Haydn to

heart-wrenching Mendelssohn, Czech dances to Polish folk tunes, feed your soul on the

joys, sorrows and exuberance of this music, brought to you with the trademark intensity of

Brisbane’s Orava Quartet.

Within the next decade, the Orava Quartet will surely take its place as one of the most accomplished string quartets on the planet... as well as becoming one of Australia’s proudest cultural exports.

The Australian, 2018

Each year, Camerata offers a platform for an artist or group to enhance career opportunities

and to experience working in a larger chamber ensemble.

Residencies with Camerata offer artists the opportunity to perform on QPAC’s Concert

Hall stage as a member of Camerata’s ensemble, an introduction to Camerata’s partners

and networks, business development advice and broader profiling experiences through

Camerata’s other programs and in 2019, a presented concert series in Brisbane and

Toowoomba.

In 2019 we welcome Orava Quartet as Artist-in-Residence.

The Orava Quartet, founded in 2007 by brothers Daniel Kowalik (violin) and Karol Kowalik

(cello), Thomas Chawner (viola), and joined in 2011 by David Dalseno (violin), is one of the

most exciting string quartets of its generation. Known for their passionate and thrilling

performances, they have been hailed by The Australian as “the future of Australian Chamber

Music, the real deal”.

Signed to Universal Music Australia and selected by Deutsche Grammophon

Australia for the label’s first ever recording release (2018), Orava Quartet has

toured in Canada, the United States, United Arab Emirates, China, Hong Kong,

Singapore, the Philippines and tours and performs at Festivals throughout Australia.
