include Dean Martin’s singer-actress daughter DEANA MARTIN, whose works include the Top 10 album Memories Are Made of This and 2009’s Volare. Her Girl of the Month Club single was a radio favorite, topping the music charts. She has appeared on numerous television programs, including shows hosted by Joey Bishop, Merv Griffin, and Mike Douglas. She was also on the popular series The Monkees. The songstress was featured in the Western drama Young Billy Young, which starred Robert Mitchum and Angie Dickinson; Strangers at Sunrise with George Montgomery; and A Voice in the Night with Vito Scotti.

“With a full, rich voice that’s been described as ‘seductive’ and ‘effortless’ and a natural ability to connect with audiences, STEVE MARCH TORMÉ is forging his own lasting path in the world of music,” cheers the Los Angeles Times. His colorful repertoire encompasses original works, Broadway songs, Beatles and Gershwin tunes, and the music of his legendary father, Mel Tormé. The Chicago Tribune hailed, “[He] has a terrific set of ears and a nearly infallible sense of pitch. … Tormé commands

a visceral understanding of Swing rhythm. … [He] knows how to sing a ballad openly, warmly and with a minimum of affecta-tion.”

In a tribute to their father, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Ricky Nelson, who died in a 1985 plane crash, twin brothers MATTHEW AND GUNNAR NELSON perform his leg-endary hits, including Travelin’ Man, Poor Little Fool, Lonesome Town, and Hello Mary Lou. Together, the siblings have rocked the Billboard charts with an endless string of hits, including the No. One songs Love and Affection, After the Rain, More Than Ever, Only Time Will Tell, and (You Got Me) All Shook Up.

Former Miss America and television personality MARY ANN MOBLEY emcees the afternoon. Awarded the “Out-standing Young Woman of the Year Award” in 1966 by Lady Bird Johnson, Mobley has appeared in the Elvis Presley movies Girl Happy and Harum Scarum. She was also on the popular television shows Fantasy Island, Diff’rent Strokes, Falcon Crest, and The Love Boat. n

SHUFFLE.PLAY.LISTEN, pianist Christopher O’Riley and cellist Matt Haimovitz explore the lyrical and virtuosic properties of their instruments with works by Johann Sebas-tian Bach, Radiohead, Astor Piazzolla, Frédéric Chopin, and Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky.

From his groundbreaking transcriptions of music by Rock group Radiohead to his unforgettable interpretations of new and old repertoire, pianist CHRISTOPHER O’RILEY has redefined the possibilities of Classical music. The New York Times cited him for his “rhythmic concentration, vir-tuosity and high-speed finger work and beauty of tone.” The paper said that O’Riley “showed not only that he is a pianist and musician of skill, intelligence and stylistic awareness but also that he has strong convictions about the pieces he plays and the ability to project them to his listeners.” Rolling Stone magazine hailed O’Riley’s piano mastery as “daydream beautiful.”

The host of National Public Radio’s popular From the Top (a show that spotlights young musical talents), O’Riley turned heads in the music world when he tackled the English Alternative-Rock band Radiohead’s True Love

Waits. O’Riley – who has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Pittsburgh Symphony – is a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Andrew Wolf Memorial Chamber Music Prize.

In 1984, cellist MATT HAIMOVITZ made his debut, at age 13, as a soloist with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic. By age 17, he completed his first recording with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Since then, he has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. The Sacramento Bee called him and his repertoire “daring.”

An Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, Haimovitz received the “Concert Music Award” for his advocacy of living composers and pioneering spirit from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. He also won the American Music Center’s “Trailblazer Award” for his far-reaching contributions to American music. In 1999, the Israeli native became the first cellist in history to receive the prestigious Premio Internazionale “Accademia Musicale Chigiana” distinction. n

From a relatively unknown show, New Shanghai Circus has evolved throughout the years into one of the most popular family-friendly productions in the United States and abroad. The production has thrilled scores of fans and critics, winning an award for “Best Show of 1999” in Branson, Missouri. The Tokyo Daily News praised the show as a “thrilling presentation of the classical Chinese physical art on the modern stage.” New Shanghai Circus also was recognized with the “Branson Peace Award” and the “Best Foreign Production on Broadway” honor in 1999.

LIZHI ZHAO (Producer) dreamed of a career in the performing arts when he was a young child. He began with music lessons, becoming a Chinese long flute soloist at age 8. Zhao graduated from the Shanghai Theatrical University, which is the largest College of Arts in China.

In 1973, Zhao took his first job with the Cultural

Bureau. He was sent to the Shanghai Magic Troupe as secretary to the director in 1983 and three years later, Zhao became the director of the troupe. He recruited the best young performers in Shanghai from gymnastics schools and dance academies. Zhao contacted companies in the United States, Europe, and other parts of Asia to tour his troupe. He studied the western style of performance so that his show would combine traditional Chinese acrobatics with the most contemporary staging. Zhao formed the New Shang-hai Circus as the touring company of the Shanghai Magic Troupe.

In 1998, Zhao traveled with his troupe to the United States where they became involved with the “Branson Proj-ect” in Branson, Missouri. The Chinese artistic community had several destination goals: the United States, Broadway, and Las Vegas. In 1999, the New Shanghai Circus was the first Chinese acrobatic troupe to be invited to perform for six weeks on Broadway. Although the troupe tours nation-ally every year, the New Shanghai Circus has had nine suc-cessful years in Branson, Missouri, where it is considered to be home-away-from-home. In 2007, Zhao expanded to the Smokey Mountain area with a new show called The Legends of China, a Chinese variety show encompassing Folk dance, Kung Fu, high flying acrobatics, and the thunder drum ensemble.

William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri, awarded Zhao with an honorary doctorial degree for his cul-tural endeavors and for the success of the “Branson Project.” In 2006, Zhao earned the Lifetime Achievement Award in Arts for his contributions to Chinese artistries, making him one of the youngest awardees in Chinese history. CHINESE ACROBATS TUMBLING THROUGH HISTORY The Chinese acrobatic tradition dates back to 700 B.C.; more than 2,000 years of tumbling, balancing, and juggling. Ancient stone carvings, earthen pottery, and early written work trace the ancestry of today’s spectacular acts. Relics tell the tales of famous acrobats like Confucius’ father, who is believed to have lifted a pair of 1,000-pound city gates to let an army storm through. The art of Chinese acrobatics developed out of the Lunar New Year harvest celebrations, where the village’s peasants and craftsmen would hold a kind of Chinese Thanksgiving. Ac-robats would use household tools and common items found around the farm and workshop as part of their exciting

feats. Performers passed their skills down from generation to generation and great acrobatic families of China entertained everyone from city rulers to village people, performing at ceremonial carnivals and public theaters across the country.

Over the years, as China plunged into economic and social upheaval, many fine arts were lost and acrobats found themselves on the verge of extinction. Since the Revolution in 1949, the government has made great efforts to foster and develop traditional arts and culture in China, and acrobatics has enjoyed a new life.

Today only a few descendants of the old and famous acrobatics families remain. These individuals have organized China’s traditional entertainers into professional acrobatic troupes with formal academies for training young, promis-ing entertainers and internationally renowned companies. Modern-day Chinese acrobatics reflect the industry, re-sourcefulness and courage of the Chinese people. At pres-ent, there are more than 120 professional acrobatic troupes across China, and more than 12,000 performers. n

BIOGRAPHIESFor nearly 20 years, ROB KAPILOW has brought

the joy and wonders of Classical music – and unraveled some of its mysteries – to audiences of all ages and back-grounds. Characterized by his unique ability to create an “aha” moment for his audiences and collaborators, what-ever their level of musical sophistication or naiveté, Kap-ilow’s work brings music into people’s lives – opening new ears to musical experiences and helping people to listen actively rather than just hear. The Boston Globe said, “It’s a cheering thought that this kind of missionary enterprise did not pass from this earth with Leonard Bernstein. Rob Kapilow is awfully good at what he does. We need him.”

Kapilow’s range of activities is impressively broad, in-cluding his What Makes It Great? presentations, his family compositions and FamilyMusik events, and his Citypieces. The reach of his interactive events and activities is wide, both geographically and culturally – from native American tribal communities in Montana and inner-city high school students in Louisiana to wine tasters in the Napa Valley. From tots barely out of diapers to musicologists hailed from Ivy League programs, his audiences are diverse and unexpected, but invariably rapt and keen to come back for more.

Kapilow’s popularity and appeal are reflected in notable invitations and achievements. He appeared on NBC’s Today Show in conversation with then-host Katie Couric; he presented a special What Makes It Great? event for broadcast on PBS’ Live From Lincoln Center in Janu-ary 2008; and he has written two highly popular books published by Wiley/Lincoln Center: All You Have to do Is Listen (2008), which won the PSP Prose Award for “Best Book in Music and the Performing Arts,” and What Makes It Great (2011), the first book of its kind to be especially designed for the iPad with embedded musical examples.

A documentary film – Summer Sun, Winter Moon, named after Kapilow’s choral and symphonic work of the same title – aired nationwide on PBS last year. Kapilow is working on a sequel to his first book, which is scheduled to be published this year. He is also writing a symphony for San Francisco’s Marin Symphony that will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge in 2012.

Kapilow’s career has been marked by numerous major awards and grants. He won first place in the Fontainebleau

Casadesus Piano Competition and was the second-place winner of the Antal Dorati Conductor’s Competition with the Detroit Symphony. Kapilow was featured on Chicago Public Radio’s prestigious Composers in America series and is a recipient of an Exxon “Meet-the-Composer” grant and numerous ASCAP awards.

Kapilow has conducted many of North America’s finest orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra; the National symphony; the St. Louis, Atlanta, Toronto, and Detroit symphonies; and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. He is an exclusive Schirmer composer and his composi-tions have been performed by almost every major Ameri-can orchestra as well as ensembles in Europe, Asia, and Australia.

CONRAD TAO, says The Washington Post, is “un-questionably a prodigious talent on display.” Tao gave his first piano recital at age 4 and, by the time he was 8 years old, the wunderkind made his concert debut with the Utah Chamber Music Festival Orchestra.

At age 10, Tao became the youngest winner of the prestigious BMI Carlos Surinach Prize for young composers in the Western Hemisphere. An eight-time consecutive winner of the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award, he has been featured on the national radio pro-gram From the Top as both pianist and composer. Tao, now 16 years old, won the Juilliard Pre-College’s Gina Bachau-er Piano Competition and the 2006 Prokofiev Concerto Competition.

Tao appeared as soloist with the Philadelphia Or-chestra, the Russian National Orchestra, the San Francis-co Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, and the Nether-lands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. He has collaborated with renowned maestros such as Christoph Eschenbach, John Giordano, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Mikhail Pletnev, Leonard Slatkin, Xian Zhang, and Jaap van Zweden. n

His firstmusical, a 1938 collaboration with NathanielBenchley and Benjamin Welles, was a satiricalsalute to Hitler and Mussolini, So Proudly We Hail. The son of a Viennese actor-singer and a pianoprodigy himself by the age of four, FrederickLoewe was exposed to music all his life. At thir-teen, he debuted with the Berlin Symphony Orches-

tra and continued to perform in many concert hallsafter coming to the United States in 1930. Lernerapproached Loewe at the Lambs Club in New Yorkin 1942, and the composer/lyricist team was born.Lerner's first Broadway collaboration with Loewewas the production of What's Up? which ran for amodest eight weeks. In 1947, their labors paid offwith the creation of the fantastical Brigadoon, win-ner of the New York Critics' Circle award as theBest Musical of the Year. In 1948, Lerner wrotethe book and lyrics to Love Life, with the music byKurt Weill. He was then commissioned by Holly-wood to write a libretto for "An American in Paris,"which became the first film musical to win anOscar. While Lerner and Loewe were working ontheir 1951 stage musical Paint Your Wagon, thewriting of My Fair Lady began. Two years afterits tremendous Broadway success, the pair collab-orated once again on a musical film version of"Gigi," which won nine Oscars. In 1960, four anda half years after My Fair Lady topped Broadwaycharts, Camelot was brought to the stage. WithJulie Andrews and Richard Burton heading thecast, it had a very successful run of 25 months onBroadway, totaling 873 performances. After thesuccess of Camelot, Loewe retired to the FrenchRiviera and Lerner continued to write. DespiteLoewe's retirement, they collaborated on two moreventures in the early 1970s: The Little Prince andthe transference to the stage of Gigi, the film thatthey had produced years earlier.JEFFREY B.
