Gershwin Songbook Concert Nov 4 Please join us at a special concert
featuring Reb Lisa Levine, pianist
Andrew Stewart, and the music of
George Gershwin, on Sunday,
November 4, at Epworth United
Methodist Church, at 5 p.m. The
spectacular program will include
Rhapsody in Blue and is open to
the entire Seaside community and
your friends and neighbors in the
greater beach community.
The concert is being held to
support SJC’s Capital Campaign
for our building expansion.
There is no admission charge. If
you have already donated or
pledged to the Capital Campaign,
come to celebrate our progress. If
you have not yet contributed, this
is your opportunity to attend a
beautiful event and to make your
gift or pledge.
Join us November 4 and become
an architect of Seaside’s future.
Light refreshments will follow the
concert. See flyer on page 9.
Unity Service Nov 8 on Kristallnacht Anniversary On Thursday, November 8, at 7
p.m., please attend a Unity Service
at Epworth United Methodist
Church, up the street from SJC.
November 8 is the 80th
Anniversary of Kristallnacht.
SJC’s Seaside Singers will sing a
song and Reb Lisa will speak
about the horrors of anti-Semitism
and racism in our world. The
service is sponsored by Epworth
and two other churches. See the
flyer on page 10 for details.
Annual Meeting Nov 11 SJC’s annual membership meeting
will be on Sunday, November 11,
at 9 a.m., at SJC. Members have
been mailed the meeting agenda
and a ballot for the board election.
We urge everyone to return their
ballots before the meeting. It is
extremely helpful that ballots are
returned before then, so we can be
insured that we have a quorum,
which is 15% of our membership
of more than 490 adults.
Congregational Dinner & Tot Shabbat on Dec 7 RSVP for Dinner by Dec 2 Please join us on Friday,
December 7, for a night of
Chanukah celebrations. These
celebrations are in addition to our
December 2 congregational
Chanukah party (see page 5).
First, at 5:30 p.m., there will be a
Tot Shabbat event with Reb Lisa,
followed at 6:15 by a congrega-
tional Shabbat dinner (reservations
needed) celebrating Chanukah.
Then, at 7:30, we will have our
Friday night service celebrating
Chanukah. Bring your menorah
for lighting during the dinner.
The dinner menu will be roasted
chicken, potato pancakes,
applesauce, and string beans with
almonds. The cost for the dinner is
$17 for members, $20 for non-
members, cash or check collected
at the door. Please contact Lee and
Bea Horn at 302-537-7098 or
[email protected] to make a
reservation by December 2.
SPACE IS VERY LIMITED; our
capacity is 48 people which might
be reached before the deadline.
Come and enjoy.

Co-President’s Message - Buddy Feldman
Co-President Alyssa Simon and I
encourage all our members, new
and long-standing, to attend the
annual membership meeting at
SJC on Sunday, November 11, at
9:00 a.m.. At the meeting, we elect
new members to the Board,
present next year’s budget, and
receive committee reports.
You should have received a
mailing from SJC with
biographies of the three candidates
running for three-year terms on
the Board of Directors. Please
return the ballots, included in the
mailing, in advance of the
meeting. Doing so will insure that
we have enough ballots to
establish a quorum and validate
the election.
At the annual meeting you will
hear about all of Seaside’s
activities and have an opportunity
to ask questions and make
comments. Hopefully, you will
find areas that match your
interests and where you can
volunteer your talents and energy.
Seaside needs fresh ideas and
volunteers to make our programs
relevant.
Alyssa and I, and all the Board
members, look forward to greeting
you on November 11.

Message from Reb Lisa The word Rabbi means “teacher”.
Since my first ordination as
Hazzan in 1989 from Hebrew
Union College-JIR in NYC,
people have been calling me
Cantor and by extension,
sometimes Rabbi. Serving as
clergy partner and teacher is an
honor and calling that has brought
me reward and blessings over the
past 30 years. In 2014, after 25
years of full time service to the
Jewish Community I was awarded
an Honorary Doctorate from
HUC-JIR. People began calling
me “Dr. Cantor Levine.” Mostly, I
was addressed as Cantor Lisa.
During a period of mourning for
my brother Danny, mother Shirley
and sister Sharon, I began my 7
year journey of study in the
Rabbinic Pastoral program
through the Aleph Alliance for
Jewish Renewal. Reb Zalman’s
vision of a Mashpi-ah Ruchanit,
Guider of Healing, brings the
specialty of healer and Rabbi into
one sacred role, that of Rabbinic
Pastor. It was that path to which I
was called in my search for
wholeness and healing. On
January 7, 2018, I received my
second ordination as Mashpi-ah
Ruchanit. This ordination carries
with it the title “Reb” which
reflects my specialty study of
professional chaplaincy, pastoral
counseling, healing arts, and life
cycle liturgical knowledge.
Finding my true voice as your
religious leader and as Reb, gives
me the honor of taking my place
in the long lineage of healing
Rabbi’s stretching back to the
Baal Shem Tov, founder of the
Hassidic movement. It also gives

Turn your Capital Campaign Gift into a Tax Break As we strive to reach 100%
participation in the campaign to
fund SJC’s building expansion,
the Capital Campaign Committee
wants to make sure everyone is
aware of two ways to turn a
campaign gift into a tax break.
First, if you are 70½ or older, and
you are taking an IRA Required
Minimum Distribution, you can
use the RMD by sending your
campaign gift directly from your
IRA to SJC. If done correctly, the
gift will not count as income.
Second, if you own stock that has
appreciated in value, you can gift
those investments directly to
SJC’s brokerage account so that
you can avoid capital gains taxes
as set forth in IRS rules.
For more information on these
giving options, contact Campaign
Chair Marilyn Feldman at
[email protected], or Eric
Doroshow, at
Pledge forms can be found on
SJC’s website (at About Us >
Newsletter),
Why We Gave
We were undecided about retiring
to Sussex County because we
didn’t want to move to an area
without a Jewish presence.
Seaside Jewish Community was a
dream come true, and we moved
here full-time in 2004. It has been
amazingly gratifying to watch
membership grow from a group
small enough to meet in people’s
homes, hoping there would be a
minyan, to meeting in borrowed
spaces, to buying our current
building. Over 500 members and
continued growth warrant an
enlarged, improved facility. We
are happy to support the
continued growth of Seaside
Jewish Community.

Seeking Newsletter Editor and Volunteers Fran Sneider, SJC’s newsletter
editor since December 2008, is
retiring at the end of 2018. SJC is
looking for a new newsletter
editor or perhaps someone to work
as part of a team to prepare the
newsletter. While Board members
and committee chairs write the
articles, we are seeking folks with
computer word processing skills to
edit the articles, layout the
newsletter, and perform other
tasks associated with getting the
newsletter to you. If you are
interested in the position, please
email Jennifer Rubenstein,
Communications Committee
Chair, at [email protected].

Adult Education Committee Seeks Your Input What’s important to you? The
Adult Ed Committee is anxious to
meet the needs and interests of our
growing and diverse membership.
We are seeking your input as to
the types of programs and topics
that would be of interest to you
and your fellow congregants.
Please send suggestions to
A Taste of Mussar Nov 8 Our Mussar series continues at
SJC on November 8, 7:30 p.m..
Mussar is a spiritual discipline
within Judaism, a way to explore
and nurture our soul traits and
elevate our inner life. We meet on
the second Thursday of each
month. Our discussion guide is
Everyday Holiness: The Jewish
Spiritual Path of Mussar by Alan
Morinis. In November, we'll
discuss the trait of Equanimity
(Chapter 12) and set the stage for
December’s discussion of the trait
of Honor (Chapter 13). Eric
Doroshow will lead the discussion
of Equanimity. We'll tie these to
the five traits we’ve already
studied. If you are interested in
learning about what we do in our
Taste of Mussar study series,
please call our moderator, George
Beckerman, at 202-903-5060.
Parking at SJC Please park on the hard asphalt strip
closest to the building only if you
have difficulty walking on the gravel.
That way, the strip is available for
those who need the firmer surface to
walk safely.
Defiant Requiem Nov 17 On November 17, 7 p.m. at SJC,
the Adult Education Committee is
delighted to be screening The
Defiant Requiem. This World War
II documentary relates the
inspiring story of a young
conductor held in the Terezin
concentration camp. As an act of
defiance, the conductor taught a
prison chorus to perform Verdi’s
“Requiem.” We’re honored that
Murry Sidlin, Conductor/Concert
Innovator/Educator/Founder,
President, and Creative Director of
the Defiant Requiem Foundation,
will be introducing the film and
moderating a post-screening
discussion. Please join us for
Havdalah and dessert following
the presentation.
Haftorah Session Nov 19 The Haftorah class will meet at
SJC, on Monday, November 19, at
3 p.m. The session will focus on
Isaiah 57:14-58:14, the portion
read on Yom Kippur morning.
Who was the second (or maybe
the third) Isaiah? What is the
historical background of these
words? How does this Haftorah tie
into the themes of Yom Kippur
and/or the entire High Holy Day
season? On December 17 we will
explore Bemidbar-Hosea 2:1-22.

Book Group Dec 20 The SJC Book Group will next
meet at SJC on Thursday,
December 20, at 7 p.m. We will be
discussing Norwegian by Night by
Derek Miller. This fast paced
novel, set in present-day Oslo,
combines suspense, mystery, and
social commentary. The lead
character, an 82 year old Jewish
man from New York, finds
himself living in a foreign country,
confronted with a situation that
requires him to rely on skills
learned as a young man in the U.S.
military. This book has won many
prizes, including one from the
Crime Writers Association. The
book club will continue in 2019
with the following books (dates to
be confirmed in next month’s
newsletter): January—The Fish
That Ate the Whale: The Life and
Times of America's Banana King
by Rich Cohen; March—We Were
the Lucky Ones by Georgia
Hunter; May—My Pashtun Rabbi
by David Eden. If you have any

Seeking New Religious School Director Joel Simon, SJC’s Religious
School Director since 2014, has
decided to step down as director at
the end of the current 2018-19
school year. Seaside is looking for
a new school director. The
position entails developing and
modifying curriculum, ordering
materials, scheduling and training
staff, planning and leading
celebrations, working with
children and parents throughout
the year, and other roles associated
with running a religious school
program. The school meets for 24-
26 Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon
between Labor Day and Memorial
Day. If you are interested in the
position, please email a letter of
interest and a resume to Marjorie
Kobrin, Youth Education
Committee Chair, at

1, 2019.
Religious School News On Sunday, September 30, the
religious school held its annual
Consecration ceremony. This year,
SJC welcomed three new students
who began their Jewish education
at SJC this fall. The students and
their families shared the wimpels
they created, received certificates
and mini Torahs, and enjoyed a
post-ceremony Oneg. A wimpel is
an ornate, embroidered, or painted
cloth used to bind up the Torah
scroll after it has been read. The 3
new students are Caleb Clark,
Jacoby Clark, and Rex Parsons.
Welcome to our newest students
and their families.
Chanukah Celebration Dec 2 On Sunday, December 2, join us
for a congregational Chanukah
party, beginning at 11 a.m. The
party is open to all, and there is no
charge. Our Religious School
students will lead us in the singing
of Chanukah songs and lighting
the menorah. We will then have a
potluck dairy lunch, followed by
Chanukah games, including
playing dreidel, arts and crafts,
and baking Chanukah cookies.
This will be a wonderful party and
a great opportunity for all of us to
share a fun filled day. Please join
us and bring a dairy or parve dish
to share. Any questions, contact
Joel Simon at 302-245-1386 or
Toys for Tots Dec 2 & 7 Once again, it’s time to collect
toys for tots in honor of
Chanukah. This is the fifth year
that the Social Committee has
asked the community to contribute
to this worthy cause. Please bring
your new, unwrapped toy(s) to
SJC in early December to
accommodate delivery times to
children in need. Your toys will be
welcomed on December 2, during
the congregational Chanukah
party, or the following Friday,
December 7, before the Shabbat
Chanukah service during the
congregational dinner starting at
6:15. Thanks to everyone for
making this activity a success!
Yes, You Can! Have you ever wanted to attend an
SJC event but thought you couldn't
afford it? SJC policy is to work with
you if you have a financial hardship.

in strength and raise our hands and
our voices toward kindness, good
deeds and Tikkun Olam, making
the world better for those in need.
Through these efforts we will
certainly become strong and
continue to complete the work of
creation.

Oneg/Kiddush Sponsors Needed for 2019 Thanks to everyone who
sponsored an Oneg Shabbat or
Kiddush lunch in 2018. We are
now seeking volunteers for 2019.
Think about your special events,
occasions, memories and just what
will make you feel good to be a
sponsor. To volunteer, please
contact Irene Ullmann at 302-947-
9123 or [email protected].
Pastoral Support – Just A Phone Call Away Pastoral support is available to visit
patients at local hospitals, nursing
homes, and rehab facilities. We can
help families dealing with the
death of a loved one. Our Religious
Leader is available to help families
through the rituals and processes
surrounding death, including
funeral and burial, Shiva, and
notifying the SJC community.
Other SJC members take care of
providing a Shiva tray or meal of
comfort or a contribution in
memory of the loved one. Contact
SJC’s Religious Leader or SJC’s
Chesed/Community Service
Committee Chair. See pages 2 and
3 for their contact information.
Helping Hands SJC offers support to members who
are ill, grieving, homebound, or just
need a helping hand. Available
support includes sending cards,
visiting people at home, preparing and
delivering meals, picking up groceries
and prescriptions, small repairs around
the house, and running errands. New
Helping Hand team members are
welcome. Contact Anita Smulyan at
302-703-2900. If you can provide a
meal, call Cynthia Mervis at
302-212-2692.
