B. Recommended Actions/Presentations:

2017 SEAC 24 2. Supporting Learning through Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) (Nancy Jones, Special Education

Consultant)

Interesting presentation on a new resource, ‘Teach Town Basics’ purchased for our Centre for Autism Spectrum Assistance (CASA) programs;

‘Teach Town Basics” is a combination of computer driven and teacher led ABA instruction which focuses on 6 goals

o Adaptive skills o Cognitive skills o Language Arts o Language Development o Mathematics o Social & Emotional

Good start up to the school year; schools have made an effort to make their EA allocation work;

All EAs have been deployed; the new process, (committee, pillars of safety & medical) has worked well; EA support is not provided unless there are medical and/or safety needs; intervention check list it to be completed before support staff is deployed;

Itinerant Special Education Support staff (4) have been deployed from the beginning of the school year to help with some transition of students; so far the staff have been in at least 2 schools each;

The Itinerant staff are deployed by the Support Staff Supervisor for a minimum of 3 days to a maximum of 3 weeks; their role is to observe, offer strategies, model strategies for school staff including teachers, support staff, principals and vice-principals;

Board has hired 2 safe school social workers; their responsibilities include working with students, families, and facilitating self-regulation workshops.

2016-2017 SIP claims were all approved by the Ministry of Education and generated an additional 1.6 million dollars in special education funding

Document ‘Professional Learning facilitated by Special Education Services’ was discussed (attached to agenda)

Revised ‘Be Well’ strategic plans was shared with the committee, Stefani Burosch, Mental Health Lead, will be attending SEAC at a later date to make a presentation.

Special education department focus this year is to look at transition plans for students transitioning to grade 9. Ministry of Education expects all students to have a transition plan.

Anne Marie, at the recommendation of a committee member, will begin the conversation with secondary special education curriculum chairs regarding transition plans for students transitioning to the community.

4. SEAC Goals 2017-2018 Deferred to October meeting

2017 SEAC 25 5. Administrative Procedure AP 911 – Mandated Alternate Education Settings

Anne Marie discussed the background and rational to the develop of this administrative procedure; Majority of students who are on an alternate education setting are special education students;
