LAUNCH OF THE STORYBOOK CHALLENGE AS PART OF ART IN PUBLIC PLACES

6th April 2013, 10am to 4pm Altona Meadows Library Come along for a day of sewing and socializing - and enjoy the launch of the Storybook Challenge and announcement of the winners. More details to follow.

Art in Public Places 2013 will run from 5th

April to 5th

May.

The program last year involved more than 50 artists exhibiting in 40 businesses and unexpected places across Hobson's Bay, as well as 20 art-inspired events for everyone to get involved in.

AIDS MEMORIAL QUILTS Recently the Louis Joel Centre displayed Memorial quilts supporting aids. The photo below is one of the panels from one of the Aids Memorial Quilts. The quilts are 12" square and have up to 8 panels in each – the panels are 6’ x 3’. They commemorate the lives lost to HIV/AIDS – from families, friends, hospitals, support groups and anyone who was affected by the epidemic of this dreadful disease in the 80’s and 90’s. Fortunately modern medicine provided the anti-virals needed to stem the loss of lives and we had seemingly put the AIDS issue behind us – except the incidence of people contracting AIDS is on the increase and the public showing of these stunning quilts is a timely reminder that whilst the disease is controllable – it is not curable.

Thank you to Bev

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS 6½” square, cream background – calico, cream tone on tone, etc. Any heart design. Appliqué, pieced or foundation pieced. Any heart colours. Over time Seabreeze would like to have quilts made in fabrics suitable for women, men and children, so whatever you would like to do would be greatly appreciated.

DON'T FORGET VALENTINES DAY

Originally the word Valentine meant the person whose name was picked from a box to be chosen as your sweetheart up until the 1500's. Then around 1533, it meant the folded piece of paper with the sweetheart's name on it. By 1610 it then became the gift given to this special someone and by 1824 it then became a poem, letter or verse to a sweetheart.

Although Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14 every year, it originates from the Roman celebration called Lupercalia, which was held on February 15, a fertility festival.

Roman armies invaded countries physically as well as socially. When the Romans invaded France, they introduced this festival in which Roman boys drew names of Roman girls out of an urn (to determine their partners) and then the couple exchanged gifts on the festival's day. This was considered a pagan celebration, so in 469 C.E., Pope Gelasius decided to put a Christian spin on this celebration by declaring that it was now to honor St. Valentine (A young Roman who was martyred by Emperor Claudius II who was said to have died on February 14, 270 C.E. for refusing to give up Christianity).

Why was he killed? Rumor has it that St. Valentine was a priest who defied the emperor's ban on marriages by marrying young people in secret. He was discovered, and put to death. According to legend in the 3rd century after Christ, the Emperor Claudius II did not want any of his soldiers falling in love and marrying because he felt women and families distracted the soldier's from their duty to him. And in some cases made the men not want to go to war at all. And he needed more soldiers so he declared marriage illegal. And anyone performing this ceremony would be killed.

A drunk stumbles into a confessional. The priest hears him come in, but then he doesn't hear anything, so the priest knocks on the wall. The drunk says, "Forget it, buddy, there's no paper in this one, either!"

Seabreeze Quilters Challenge No 5 “SEASONS”

You may instantly think of Summer, Autumn, Winter and

Spring – pick your favorite or do all four. How about

contrasting seasons or changing seasons?

But what about some other seasons? Growing up in our home,

we definitely had two major seasons – football and cricket!

Let your imagination run wild. Be it the sporting calendar, your

garden, or the actual weather, we all have a favorite time of

year – maybe that will be your inspiration…

Again the ‘challenge’ for you is to use a technique that you

haven’t tried before. For example:

- paper piecing

- needle turned or raw edge appliqué

- hand or free-form machine quilting

- embellishing with ribbons, buttons, lace or beads

- finishing off in a method other than traditional binding

Size: Is up to you for this one, postcard to A4

Also, you could do a single piece or a

series of pieces, but no bigger than A4

Due Date: For display at our April 20th Meeting

*Remember all entries are to comprise 3 layers and have your

name on the back, either on a label or directly on the backing

fabric.

POSTAGE PRICES FROM US ON THE RISE

This was sent in an email from one of my customers, so I thought I'd pass

on the information for all of you who like to shop online.

"I was just reading a newsletter from the States and the USPS charges have

gone up as of today.

A little harsh reality: United States Postal Service, in an effort to be cost

effective is raising the prices for shipping dramatically as per Monday,

January 28, 2013.

This means that every order as of today will have to be charged the new

and increased price.

It's a steep increase, especially for international customers who will see the

price for the envelop now at $23.95.

We will always look for the cheapest and most reliable to send your fabrics

and never charge you anything extra for shipping or handling.

Here are new shipping charges from the Fat Quarter shop – from $17 per

$100 to $24 per $100.

Just thought I’d let you know so you didn’t get any nasty surprises at

checkout if you were planning a purchase."

BIWINDI PROJECT

Tricia Salau is planning another trip to Uganda this year to continue the abovementioned project. The ladies at Biwindi have asked to learn dressmaking and Lyn, who is accompanying Tricia on the next trip, is a dressmaker. Accordingly, they are now requesting donations of such things as press studs, hooks and eyes, button, bias, binding, zippers, thread and elastic.

Dear God My prayer for

2013 is for

A fat bank account & a thin

body.

Please don't mix these up like you

did last year.

AMEN!

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big

difference. - Winston Churchill
