...there lived a mermaid named Camille. She had long, black hair and a sparkly tail of purple scales.

But Camille was different from all the other mermaids: she was smaller than them.

…une petite sirène qui se nommait Camille. Elle avait de longs cheveux noirs et une queue étincelante recouverte de belles écailles violettes.

Mais Camille était différente des autres sirènes, car elle était toute petite.

Camille’s mother and father loved her dearly. They lived together with all the mermaids and mermen in a lovely sea castle in the beautiful underwater Kingdom of Shadda, ruled by King Orthan and Queen Xaria.

Camille’s favorite place in the castle was the tower where she could sit and sing while watching everything

down below.

Son père et sa mère l’aimaient tendrement. Ils habitaient le merveilleux Palais des Ondes, où demeuraient toutes les sirènes. Ce palais se trouvait dans le royaume sous-marin de Shadda, où régnaient le Roi Orthan et la Reine Xaria.

Camille aimait s’asseoir tout en haut de la grande tour. De là-haut, tout en chantant, elle se plaisait à observer ce qui se passait en bas aux alentours.

Camille’s best friends were Shallo, a seahorse, and Clip, a crab. They had lots of fun together.

Ses meilleurs amis étaient Hubert, l’hippocampe, et Clip, le crabe. Ensemble, ils s’amusaient beaucoup.

One day Camille was feeling lonely as Clip and Shallo hadn’t been able to visit her. In the castle below, everyone was busy preparing for a celebration.

I wish I was like all the other mermaids and could help with the party, Camille thought.

She began to cry. Nobody likes me except for Shallo and Clip, and I’ll never

be able to do anything for the king and queen

because I’m so small.

Un jour, Hubert et Clip ne purent lui rendre visite, si bien que Camille se sentait très seule. En bas, dans le palais, tout le monde s’affairait aux préparatifs d’une grande fête.

Oh, que j’aimerais pouvoir préparer la fête comme les autres sirènes ! pensa Camille.

Alors, elle se mit à pleurer. Personne ne m’aime, à part Hubert et Clip. Je suis trop petite pour pouvoir me rendre utile au roi et à la reine.

In the distance was a large coral reef where a variety of fish and sea creatures lived, but one fish in particular seemed lost and lonely—a little goby fish named … Goby!

– I wish I had a friend, sighed Goby, who was very shy, but I don’t. Why would anyone want to be friends with a little fish like me?

Suddenly Goby heard a commotion coming from the undersea castle and decided to go and look.

Un peu plus loin se trouvait un grand récif de corail où vivaient toutes sortes de poissons et de créatures sous-marines. Or, l’un de ces poissons semblait égaré, solitaire. C’était un petit gobie, qui justement s’appelait Gobie !

– Oh, que j’aimerais avoir un ami, soupira Gobie, qui était extrêmement timide. Mais je n’en ai pas. Qui donc me voudrait pour ami, vu que je suis si petit ?

Tout à coup, Gobie entendit des clameurs en provenance du palais. Il décida d’aller y jeter un coup d’œil.

As Goby emerged from the coral reef, he bumped into Old Budder Blowfish.

– I’m sorry, he stuttered.

– You should be more careful, responded Old Budder.

– I heard some noise coming from the castle. Do you know what’s happening? asked Goby.

– Young Prince Cadis is celebrating his fifth birthday. Are you going to join in the entertainment? Old Budder asked.

– I’m not sure if I can.

En sortant du récif, Gobie vint se cogner la tête contre le vieux Mondéo, le poisson-globe.

– Oh, excuse-moi, bredouilla-t-il.

– Tu devrais faire un peu attention, repartit Mondéo.

– J’ai entendu des cris qui venaient du palais. Que se passe-t-il ? demanda Gobie.

– Le jeune Prince Cadis célèbre son cinquième anniversaire. Te joindras-tu aux festivités ? interrogea Mondéo.

– Je ne sais pas si j’ai le droit d’y aller.

– Of course you can! All the fish and sea creatures of the area are invited. That would include you, little Goby.

– I’ll just look around, then, but not stay. I wouldn’t know what to do, and I’d probably feel out of place.

– Mais bien sûr que oui ! Tous les poissons et toutes les créatures sous-marines des environs y sont conviés. Donc toi aussi, mon petit Gobie.

– Dans ce cas, j’irai y faire un tour, mais guère plus. Dans ce genre de fête, je me sens toujours mal à l’aise et je ne sais pas où me mettre.

Old Budder chuckled and said, – Ah, little Goby, friends are not going to fall on top

of you! You have to go out of your way to find them!– But I just don’t know how to make friends, Goby

said. Old Budder laughed. – Just be kind and friendly, and they’ll want to be

friends with you!Le vieux Mondéo eut un sourire amusé : – Ah, mon petit Gobie, les amis ne vont pas te tomber

du ciel ! Tu dois faire un effort pour les trouver !– Mais je ne sais pas comment me faire

des amis, dit Gobie.Mondéo rit de bon cœur : – Il te suffit d’être

gentil, amical, et tout le monde voudra être ton ami !

Hearing all the laughter and merriment at the castle, Goby felt shy, so he quickly swam up the tower. At the top he noticed a little mermaid by herself, crying.

Not wanting to disturb her, Goby quickly decided to leave the tower, but his tail knocked over a shelf.

BANG! CLANG! CLUNK!Camille turned to see a colorful

fish quickly swim past, which made her curious, so she followed him.

Les éclats de rires qui fusaient de partout eurent l’effet de rendre Gobie encore plus timide qu’il n’était. Vite, il monta se réfugier en haut de la grande tour. Là, il aperçut une petite sirène solitaire, qui pleurait.

Ne voulant pas la déranger, il fit demi-tour. Mais, malencontreusement, de sa queue il renversa une étagère.

BANG ! BOUM ! BADABOUM !Se retournant, Camille entrevit un petit poisson

multicolore qui s’enfuyait à la hâte. Curieuse, elle le suivit.

– Who are you? she asked. – Goby, he answered with a shy squeak. – Nice to meet you, Goby. Don’t worry about the

mess, Camille said. We can pick things up together.Goby felt very shy, but he remembered what Old

Budder had told him, so he decided to give it a try.– Do you come up here often? Goby asked.– It’s my favorite place, she answered. But this is the

first time I’ve seen you here.

– Qui es-tu ? demanda-t-elle. –Gobie, murmura-t-il timidement.

–Heureuse de faire ta connaissance, Gobie, fit Camille, qui se voulait rassurante. Ne t’inquiète pas pour les dégâts, je vais t’aider.

Gobie se sentit tout intimidé. Mais, se rappelant les paroles de Mondéo, il s’enhardit :

– Est-ce que tu viens souvent ici ? – C’est mon endroit préféré, répondit Camille. Mais c’est

la première fois que je t’y vois.

It’s got the best view. You can see everything that’s happening in the castle.

– Why aren’t you down there with everyone else? asked Goby.

Camille looked down. – Look at me! I am so much smaller and clumsier

than everyone else.– Well, I’m small, too. Goby said.

– Camille…Camille! two voices echoed in the tower.

– Who’s that? Goby asked.

D’ici, on a une super vue sur tout ce qui se passe dans le palais.

– Que fais-tu là, au lieu d’être en

bas avec tout le monde ? s’enquit Gobie.

Camille baissa la tête.

– Tu vois bien que je suis toute petite, et maladroite, comparée aux autres.

– Mais, moi aussi, je suis tout petit, fit remarquer Gobie.– Camille… Camille ! Deux voix venaient de résonner dans la tour.– Qui est-ce ? demanda Gobie.

– Oh, that’s Shallo and Clip, Camille explained, introducing her two friends. I was thinking we could all do something together.

– Sure, Shallo agreed.Now Goby didn’t feel

sad and lonely anymore. Old Budder was right! By stopping to make friends with Camille, he had found some new friends himself.

– Oh, voici Hubert et Clip, expliqua Camille, en présentant ses deux amis. On pourrait peut-être s’amuser ensemble.

– Bien sur, répondit Hubert.

À présent, la tristesse et la solitude de Gobie s’étaient envolées. Le vieux Mondéo avait raison ! Parce qu’il avait pris le temps de faire connaissance avec Camille, il s’était fait trois nouveaux amis d’un coup.

– I like making friends, Tristan said as Grandpa Jake closed the book.

– J’aime bien me faire des amis, dit Tristan, tandis que Grand-père refermait le livre.

Moral

Friendship is a gift from God. When we reach out to others, we make friends and find happiness ourselves.
