Picture Audio Titles “My Hero” Music Image of “we’re out of recession” Opening cupboard Food Bank sign
Comm-‐“We’re being told the country is on it’s way out of the recession, we are in a period of growth. However, for many people in Medway even putting food on the table is a daily struggle. Charity’s are needed to be put in place to help the 13 million people living under the poverty line in the UK.
Comm-‐“Trussell Trust developed one of the UK’s first social franchise networks back in 2004 in response to the increasing problem of Britain’s hidden hunger.
Ian talking Comm-‐Ian Childs set up “Ian is the project manager of the Medway branch-‐ he is responsible for coordinating the distribution of food from the warehouse and centers. ”
Ian Childs Ian Childs sync “The Trussell Trust organisation is a Christian charity, that started in Salisbury, and since then they have opened over 400 food banks”
Map Comm-‐ In 2013, 3 ½ thousand people were in need of support from food banks. In medway alone there are 6 distrabution centres set up by the trussell trust with 107 agencies that, like most food banks, give out vouchers. However they have a different way to operate to other food banks.
Ian Ian sync-‐“The way the way that we operate, with a limitation of the number of times we help,3 times in 6 months being the guideline.”
Comm-‐ “Food banks clients may receive help but it is for the short period of time, while they wait for benefits”
Ian Ian sync “There is no doubt that some of the demand that we have has been because of government changes to the benefit system at the times of benefits and how they are claimed. “
Comm-‐Some people are ashamed to be associated with benefits such as Jane,

Jane as we will be calling her, didn’t want to be identified due to the negative perceptions of benefit claimers”
Jane Jane, sync “The food banks helped me with the situation at the time, I only earn £320 a month, I have two jobs but they are very part time and I can’t work anymore hours around because of my illness.”
Comm-‐ “Jane needed help as she could not work for long hours due long term mental health problems.”
“I’ve lost my benefits because the government decided I was fit for work, to do more than 15 hours, I did try to increase longer days it didn’t work at all, now I do 12 ½ hours, I do find that sometimes it is tiring, but I like to get out and about and do something,
Comm-‐“It could be said that there are still negative connotation, it can even be said they are ashamed, Jane gives some insight into how she feels”
Jane sync “I wouldn’t want to sit at home and do nothing and watch television which perhaps people think that people who have been on welfare, that’s all they do but I couldn’t do that.
Comm-‐ “Due to Jane’s struggle with money she needed help, Jane turned to the Food Bank, but found this a difficult experience”
Jane Jane sync “It was hard because you feel embarrassed, you feel it’s not a good thing to a food bank, although their there for a reason to help people like me, you receive 3 days supply of food, and perhaps a bit more, depends on how much you need, they’ll supply you nappies, shampoo, anything that daily life you need, toilet roll, it’s horrible if you run out of toilet roll ”
Comm-‐“Benefit applicants do not always get what they need as cuts in benefits are to blame for 65% of referrals. The delay in benefit has caused the public to seek else where to feed their families. Jane lost her benefit

and had to seek help at a food bank. ” Jane “It’s not easy and any body that thinks
it is they don’t know, they don’t know what they are talking about”
Comm-‐“People such as Jane that experience the trauma of going without food rely on ,the thousands that donate food. Trussell Trust relies on the good will of the public to donate food this goes to the food bank warehouse, where it is sorted and distributed to the centers.” (Kevin set up)
Kevin interview with cut a ways Kevin Sync “Donations system works, through the good will of people in Medway they donate food to Medway food bank through some of our centers and some of our supporting churches and many companies and schools donate food either on a regular on one of basis”
Man walking around warehouse Comm-‐But donations alone are not enough without the support of volunteers the system would not work, there are two types of volunteers, those that work in the warehouse and help Kevin……
Kevin Kevin sync “Food bank runs purely by the good will and hard work and dedication of volunteers, we have up to a dozen volunteers on a roster system at the warehouse and they work very hard day to day, weighing all the food, sorting it categorizing it, and then also shipping out orders of food to our 6 centers across Medway towns”
Comm-‐“and the ones that work in the centers, like Graham, he’s a volunteer which is one of the 6 centers, his role is to meet and support people during a difficult time”
Graham Graham sync “I wanted to give back something of my time to people who are less fortunate than me, there is so much need in society these days and I think food bank is one of the most fulfilling things a person can do.”
Comm-‐The centers receive food from the warehouse on a regular basis
Graham with boxes Graham sync “We receive all the food

from the food bank warehouse, the orders sent out on a Monday and we receive the food back on a Thursday and then its unpacked ready for Friday”
Comm-‐The Food Bank at the salvation army opens Monday’s and Fridays, volunteers such as Graham meet the clients of the food bank every week.”
Graham Graham sync “They come with a voucher we would then make up a food parcel for them”
Comm-‐“Food parcels are handed to clients from the food bank. The centers have the facilities for the clients to have drinks. Jane a former client of the food banks now volunteers to help out”
Jane “I help out at the cafeteria side, it was very welcoming. I go up there after work and just help out in the cafeteria area, cups of teas and coffees and cake, it’s all free and the people give donation, and goes towards the food bank, it’s a lovely atmosphere in the café.
Comm “Although the help that the Food Banks is limited the Food Bank clients are being accused of cheating the system and scamming recourses from others in need.
Ian Ian sync “a critism that may often be leveled at us is that if we give people food then they spend whatever money they do have on drugs or alcohol,”
Benefit cheats/benefit street Comm-‐“unfortunately the stories which get the headlines often reinforce this view. In fact they criticize food banks them selves. Negative press has been directed to the Food Banks, regarding their checking of the clients that come into the Food Bank.
Ian Checking process to ensure that they are need, our process is carried out by professionals in the community they may be doctors, they might be social workers, a community liaison office in school, they might be a children’s center”

Jane Jane sync “They do check and are very careful, they will check you identity, but they would ask for something that proves your identity, but they would still perhaps ask for something proves your identity, it could be a letter, from the social services or council tax or anything like that , that shows address and shows your name”
Comm-‐“There will always be those who know how to cheat the system but does this mean that the people who are in need should be deprived of the service and associated with those abusing the system. Judging by the increase in demand the need is still present.
Ian Ian sync “It could get better, as in less people need us and its ultimately our goal, not to be needed. But it could easily go the other way to it increase, what I’m hearing politically that they are still cutting back, so if those cuts were to affect the people we are often dealing with even more deeply, making that group even bigger then food banks will continue to grow.”
