benefit  system  at  the  times  of  benefits  and  how  they  are  claimed.  “

Some  people  are  ashamed  to  be  associated  with  benefits  such  as  Jane,  Jane  as  we  will  be  calling  her  for  the  purposes  of  this  film,  didn’t  want  to  be  identified  due  to  the  negative  perceptions  of  benefit  claimers…..

Jane     Jane,  sync  “The  food  banks  helped  me  with  the  situation  at  the  time,  I  only  earn  £320  a  month,  I  have  two  jobs  but  they  are  very  part  time  and  I  can’t  work  anymore  hours  around  because  of  my  illness,  I  help  out  at  the  cafeteria  side,  it  was  very  welcoming.”

“It  could  be  said  that  there  are  still  negative  connotation,  it  can  even  be  said  they  are  ashamed,  Jane  describes  her  view”

Jane     Jane  sync  “It  was  hard  because  you  feel  embarrassed,  you  feel  it’s  not  a  good  thing  to  a  food  bank,  although  their  there  for  a  reason  to  help  people  like  me,  you  receive  3  days  supply  ”

“People  can  lose  their  benefit  such  as  Jane”

Jane   “I’ve  lost  my  benefits  because  the  government  decided  I  was  fit  for  work,  to  do  more  than  15  hours,  I  did  try  to  increase  longer  days  it  didn’t  work  at  all,  now  I  do  12  ½  hours,  I  do  find  that  sometimes  it  is  tiring,  but  I  like  to  get  out  and  about  and  do  something,  I  wouldn’t  want  to  sit  at  home  and  do  nothing  and  watch  television  which  perhaps  people  think  that  people  who  have  been  on  welfare,  that’s  all  they  do  but  I  couldn’t  do  that.

“People  that  apply  for  benefit  do  not  always  get  what  they  need  or  the  benefit  becomes  delayed,  this  causes  a  need  for  Food  Banks  to  be  available  to  these  people.  ”

Jane     “It’s  not  easy  and  any  body  that  thinks  it  is  they  don’t  know,  they  don’t  know  what  they  are  talking  about”

“For  the  thousands  of  people  that  need

food  and  the  thousands  that  donate

food,  the  charity  relies  on  the  good  will  of  the  public  to  donate  food,  the  food  donated  to  the  Medway  food  banks  goes  to  the  food  bank  warehouse,  where  it  is  sorted  and  distributed  to  the  centers.”

Kevin  interview  with  cut  a  ways     Kevin  Sync  “Donations  system  works,  through  the  good  will  of  people  in  Medway  they  donate  food  to  Medway  food  bank  through  some  of  our  centers  and  some  of  our  supporting  churches  and  many  companies  and  schools  donate  food  either  on  a  regular  on  one  of  basis”

Man  walking  around  warehouse     But  donations  alone  are  not  enough  without  the  support  of  volunteers  the  system  would  not  work,  there  are  two  types  of  volunteers,  those  that  work  in  the  warehouse  and  help  Kevin……

Kevin     Kevin  sync  “Food  bank  runs  purely  by  the  good  will  and  hard  work  and  dedication  of  volunteers,  we  have  up  to  a  dozen  volunteers  on  a  roster  system  at  the  warehouse  and  they  work  very  hard  day  to  day,  weighing  all  the  food,  sorting  it  categorizing  it,  and  then  also  shipping  out  orders  of  food  to  our  6  centers  across  Medway  towns”

“and  the  ones  that  work  in  the  centers,  like  Graham,  he’s  a  volunteer  which  is  one  of  the  6  centers,  his  role  is  to  meet  and  support  people  during  a  difficult  time”

Graham     Graham  sync  “I  wanted  to  give  back  something  of  my  time  to  people  who  are  less  fortunate  than  me,  there  is  so  much  need  in  society  these  days  and  I  think  food  bank  is  one  of  the  most  fulfilling  things  a  person  can  do.”

The  centers  receive  food  from  the  warehouse  on  a  regular  basis

Graham  with  boxes     Graham  sync  “We  receive  all  the  food  from  the  food  bank  warehouse,  the  orders  sent  out  on  a  Monday  and  we  receive  the  food  back  on  a  Thursday  and  then  its  unpacked  ready  for  Friday”

volunteers  such  as  Graham  meet  the  clients  of  the  food  bank  every  week.”

Graham     Graham  sync  “They  come  with  a  voucher  we  would  then  make  up  a  food  parcel  for  them”

“Food  parcels  are  handed  to  clients  from  the  food  bank.  The  centers  have  the  facilities  for  the  clients  to  have  drinks.  Jane  a  former  client  of  the  food  banks  now  volunteers  to  help  out”

Jane     “I  go  up  there  after  work  and  just  help  out  in  the  cafeteria  area,  cups  of  teas  and  coffees  and  cake,  it’s  all  free  and  the  people  give  donation,  and  goes  towards  the  food  bank,  sometimes  we  take  certain  items  out,  like  bread  or  eggs  because  they  are  not  allowed  to  take  things  like  that,  and  sometimes  if  there  is  a  loaf  of  bread  they  give  it  to  somebody  who  is  helping  out  there,  who  needs  it,  cause  we  have  some  other  people  that  have  used  the  food  bank,  and  still  in  need,  it’s  a  lovely  atmosphere  in  the  café.

“Even  though  the  food  bank  have  given  people  a  helping  hand  for  periods  of  time  without  what  they  need,  food  banks  are  being  critised,  for  providing  help  to  some  but  not  to  others  or  just  for  giving  help  to  the  wrong  people”

Ian     Ian  sync  “a  critism  that  may  often  be  leveled  at  us  is  that  if  we  give  people  food  then  they  spend  whatever  money  they  do  have  on  drugs  or  alcohol  ,”

Benefit  cheats/benefit  street   “this  critique  can  be  said  to  be  a  back  lash  from  the  public  viewing  people  on  benefits  to  go  on  holidays,  headlines  such  as  “Benefit  street  star  White  Dee  on  Boozy  Magaluf  holiday  despite  being  “too  depressed”  to  work”  does  not  help  the  stereotype  in  the  publics  eye.  Negative  press  has  been  directed  to  the  Food  Banks,  regarding  their  checking  of  the  clients  that  come  into  the  Food  Bank.

Jane     Jane  sync,  “I  read  the  article  in  the  Mail  that  they  were  saying  the  food  bank,  aren’t  checked.”

Page 5: Script 5

“Trusslle  Trust  food  banks  have  a  system  of  checking,  the  checking  process  is  carried  out  by  pillars  of  the  community,  for  example,  doctors,  social  workers  and  children’s  centers  liaison.

Jane     Jane  sync  “They  do  check  and  are  very  careful,  they  will  check  you  identity,  but  they  would  ask  for  something  that  proves  your  identity,  but  they  would  still  perhaps  ask  for  something  proves  your  identity,  it  could  be  a  letter,  from  the  social  services  or  council  tax  or  anything  like  that  ,  that  shows  address  and  shows  your  name”

“Every  charity  can  be  seen  to  be  venerable  to  those  who  know  how  to  cheat  the  system  but  this  does  not  mean  that  the  help  is  not  getting  to  the  people  it  needs  to,  people  like  Jane  who  have  received  the  help  they  need  in  a  difficult  time  where  there  is  a  choice  between  a  roof  over  their  head  or  food  on  the  table.”
