Field Mouse 1Let’s get out of here.

Chief Weasel Good evening, little Field Mice. Out for a stroll are we?

Mice move away only to be stopped by weasels in the corner. Chief Weasel surveys the audience and then goes into his solo while band plays.

Chief WeaselI’m bad, bad, Weasel BrownBaddest man in the whole darn townBadder than old King KongMeaner than a junkyard dog.

All WeaselsHe’s bad, bad, Weasel BrownBaddest man in the whole darn townBadder than old King KongMeaner than a junk yard dog.

First WeaselI say we give them a bite. Give them a nip. Teach them who’s boss here in the Wild Wood. (Weasels laugh)

Field MiceOh! Oh!

Second WeaselWeren’t planning to run away, were you? That ain’t sociable.

Third WeaselNo, it ain’t. (weasels laugh again)

Field Mouse 1If you harm us in any way you’ll have to answer to Badger. (Weasels pull back, the name Badger has an effect on them.)

Third WeaselBadger?

Fourth WeaselWe don’t want no trouble from him.

Chief Weasel

1

Shut your yap.

Fourth WeaselWhat’d I say?

Chief WeaselCome here.

Fourth Weasel moves guardedly over to the chief who takes his cap and whacks him.

Fourth WeaselOw!

Chief WeaselNever question authority. Got that?

Fourth WeaselYeah, yeah, whatever you say, Chief. You’re the boss.

Mice start to run again

First WeaselHey they’re getting away.

Chief WeaselLet them go. Wasting time on field mice ain’t dignified.

Fifth WeaselSince when?

Sixth WeaselSince they said they’d tell Badger on us.

Chief WeaselYou

Sixth WeaselMe?

Chief WeaselCome here.

Sixth Weasel warily steps to the chief who whacks him 3 times.

2

Sixth WeaselOw! Ow! Ow!

Chief WeaselI’ll deal with Badger when the time is right

Fifth WeaselWhen will that be?

Chief Weasel gives him a dirty look

Fifth WeaselI know, I know

Fifth Weasel whacks himself 3 times.

Chief WeaselGather round. We have to be careful with Badger. He’s well respected. And he is wise. Besides, it’s that dumb Toad we’re after. Never forget it.

WeaselsYea, it’s Toad, dumb Toad that we want.

Chief WeaselOne of these days Toad will be history. He’s too stupid to last much longer. When that happens, we’ll move in.

They all dance to Beat it! (Band) then they exit

Thing 5In January 2011, every student at Rosa Parks began learning basic tap dance steps during their drama time. Pretty soon everyone was “shuffle step” and “shuffle ball changing” down the halls. The big show this spring was Broadway Magic, which taught us all the history of Broadway and how the amazing musicals we perform at Rosa Parks had evolved. In this show all the sixth grade actors performed a tap dance to One Singular Sensation from the musical Chorus Line. To keep the tradition going, may I present our Rosa Parks 5th grade tappers. . . Lights go off, dancers get in place, lights come up, CD and dance begins.

Things 5 & 6 come on pretending to tap dance

Thing 5Oh, I just love that tap dancing! Come on everyone, stand up and try it. Shuffle – that means slide your foot, then step. Try it again. Not bad, not

3

bad. I just have to ask – please stand if you were part of the amazing productions of my year 2010 – 2011.

Thing 6Well, moving on, October 2011 brings us to Annie. Mrs. Van chose this show as so many Rosa Parks kids had requested it and they were right on – it was a perfect show for us to do. Let’s drop into the orphanage and see what Annie and Miss Hannigan are up to.

Lights go off, orphans and Annie take positions on stage; Thing 6 exits. Lights come on low.

KateAnnie, whatta ya doin’?

AnnieRunning away.

TessieOh my goodness.

AnnieMy folks are never comin for me. I gotta go find them.

JulyAnnie, you’re crazy. Miss Hannigan’ll catch you.

DuffyIt will hurt, Annie.

AnnieI don’t care. I’m getting’ outta here. Okay. I’m ready. Wish me luck.

All orphans except PepperGood luck, Annie.

PepperSo long, dumbbell. And good luck.

Miss Hannigan enters and shines a flashlight on Annie.

Miss Hannigan

4

Aha! Caught you!She flings Annie to the floor.

Get up! Get up!

Annie (getting up warily)Yes, Miss Hannigan

Miss HanniganTurn around

Annie doesn’t turn around

I said turn around.

Annie turns around and Hannigan hits her with the paddle and Annie reacts.

There! Now, what do you say? What….do….you…say???

Annie reluctantlyI love you, Miss Hannigan.

Miss HanniganRotten orphan.

Annie angrilyI’m not an orphan. My mother and father left a note saying they loved me and they were coming back for me.

Miss HanniganThat was 1922; this is 1933.

All stage lights come on

Get up! Now, for this one’s shenanigans, you’ll all get down on your knobby little knees and clean this dump until it shines like the top of the Chrysler Building!

TessieBut it’s four o’clock in the morning.

Miss Hannigan laughing cruellyBut it’s four o’clock in the morning. Get to work!!!

Annie, All OrphansYes, Miss Hannigan.

5

Miss HanniganNow!

Starts to leave

Why any kid would want to be an orphan, I’ll never know.

She exits, orphans take positions for song and dance Hard Knock Life (CD)

Thing 6Those are some sassy little orphans! Our audiences at Rosa Parks were really beginning to grow. With the production of Charlotte and Wilbur in March of 2012, a permanent change happened – our stage was moved to the middle and theater “in the round” at Rosa Parks began. This change enabled everyone to have a good seat. It also challenged our acting skills and our flexibility as now we had new issues with microphones and stage lighting. In fact for this show we had to keep all the house lights on to have enough light. Along with our audience growing, our student population was growing, new friends being made. It just seemed right to have a show about friendship.

8

Lights go down, Thing 6 exits and Wilbur comes on. Lights come up.

WilburIt is a very large barn and it looks old. I like the smell. Hay and manure. Horses and cows. It fells peaceful. As though nothing bad could happen ever again. Fern was right. It is nice here.

Wilbur yawns and lies down for a nap. Once asleep the Goose and the Gander enter and walk around Wilbur, studying him carefully.

GooseHello, hello, hello.

Wilbur startledWho…who are you?

GooseThe Goose

GanderThe Gander, The Gander, the Gander

WilburBut I only see one Gander.

GooseNo, no, no

GanderWe tend to repeat, repeat, repeat ourselves.

GooseDo you have a name besides pig?

WilburYes, they call me Wilbur.

Templeton off stageWilbur? That’s a pretty tacky name, if you ask me.

GooseWell, nobody, nobody, nobody asked you.

WilburWho was that?

9

GanderTempleton the rat.

Templeton enters carrying string, an orange and a tin can.

TempletonIn person. Well, I will admit it’s nice to have a pig around the place again. I haven’t had delicious leftover slops in an age.

WilburBut the slops will be for me.

TempletonI’m sure you will find it in your little piggy heart to share your food with dear old Templeton. Especially if I make a nest right here beside your trough.

Sheep off stageWhat’s all the commotion in there?

GanderIt’s the old, old Sheep

GooseAnd the little Lamb.

Sheep and Lamb enter

GanderWe have a new resident

GooseHis name is Wil-Wil-Wilbur.

LambOh, yeah, the pig.

SheepLamb, mind your manners.

LambNice to meet you Wilbur.

GooseOur sentiments exactly-actly-actly

10

All dance and sing We are Family (band). Wilbur follows along, starting to move and sway to the music as well.

All the AnimalsWe are familyI got all my sisters with meWe are familyGet up everybody and sing

We are familyI got all my sisters with meWe are familyGet up everybody and sing

Verse is played, animals dance

We are familyI got all my sisters with meWe are familyGet up everybody and sing

We are family I got all my sisters with meWe are familyGet up everybody and sing.

WilburThank you very much. You are wonderful. I guess I should tell you about myself.

LambOh, we know ALL about you.

WilburYou do?

SheepWe overheard the Zuckermans talking about how they plan to keep you nice and comfortable.

LambAnd fatten you up with the most delicious slops.

WilburOh, I am going to like it here!

11

SheepBut you know why they want to make you fat, don’t you?

GooseNow, now, now, old Sheep. He’ll learn soon enough.

WilburLearn what?

SheepOh, nothing, nothing. Come along Lamb.

GooseWell, I have eggs to hatch.

TempletonAnd I have trash piles to raid.

All leave except Wilbur.

WilburThey are all nice, but I miss Fern. I want love. I want a friend. Someone to play with.

Charlotte off stageDo you want a friend, Wilbur? I’ll be a friend to you.

Wilbur looks around

WilburAttention please! Will the party who just spoke to me make himself or herself known. Please tell me where you are, if you are my friend.

Charlotte enters

CharlotteSalutations.

WilburHello. What are salutations?

CharlotteIt’s a fancy way of saying “hello”. My name is Charlotte. And I will be your friend.

12

WilburBut I’m a pig and, and you’re a spider.

CharlotteHow very observant.

WilburIsn’t it a bit unusual?

CharlotteWhos to say.You are big; me, I’m small,Who says we can’t be friends.

WilburWell, I see your point. You don’t have to be exactly like somebody – to like them.

CharlotteExactly!

Lights go out, they exit and Things 6 & 7 come on.

Thing 6You know the routine, I just have to say it. Please stand if you were part of the Rosa Parks magic with Annie and or Charlotte and Wilbur. Thanks for the wonderful year.

Thing 7It is really kind of awesome that during Charlotte and Wilbur, a show about friendship, a friend of the Rosa Parks Drama program approached Mrs. Van and asked her what she needed for lighting. The next thing she knew, a GIGANTIC check came her way to purchase more stage lighting! That friend just might be in the audience tonight, I’ll never tell, but lets give them a round of applause, just in case!! Also, because of the amazing ticket sales for Annie and Charlotte and Wilbur, we were able to purchase more microphones and speakers. Great things were happening! So our fall show Seussical in 2012 was the first show to have lighting with the stage “in the round”. Seussical – hey, that’s MY show!!

All Things jumping upHey, that’s OUR show!

All the Things come up and dance to Green Eggs and Ham (CD) – a short segment. While they are dancing the Cat in the Hat, Jojo, Horton, Gertrude,

13

Mayzie and the Sour Kangaroo all dance onto the stage and take their positions.

Thing 9Wow, there was a lot of change with this show and lots of people said it was one of their favorites. I have some great memories – remember when the Cat in the Hat came out from under that gigantic hat?

Cat in the Hat sings a segment from Oh The Things You Can Think (CD)

Cat in the HatI can see that you’ve got quite a mind for your age! Why, one Think and you dragged me right onto the stage! Now, I’m here, there is no telling what may ensue. .With a Cat such as me and a Thinker like you!Oh the thinks you can think! Oh, the thinks you can thinkIf you’re willing to try. . Think invisible ink!Or a Gink with a stink! Or a star to the sky.If you open your mind, oh the thinks you will find lining up to get loose.Oh, the thinks you can think when you think about Seuss!Seuss! Seuss! Seuss! Seuss! Seuss! Seuss! Seuss!

Thing 10Or remember when Jojo and Horton were both singing that same song and they hadn’t even met yet? I loved that part.

Jojo and Horton come alive sing a segment of Alone in the Universe (CD). Each faces one side of the stage and they move to the other. At the end they find each other.

HortonI’ve been guarding this clover for over a week,Getting laughed at for thinking a dust speck can speak.Well, let them all laugh. I’ll try not to mind, For I have found something that they’ll never find. There are secrets on a leaf, in the water, in the air.Hidden planets, tiny worlds, all in visible. Not a person seems to know, not a person seems to care. There is no one who believes a thing I say!Well, I’m fairly certain at one time or other, Great thinkers all feel this way!I’m alone in the universe. So alone in the universe.I’ve found magic but they won’t see it.They all call me a lunatic. Okay, call me a lunatic. If I stand on my own, so be it. Cause I have wings.

14

Yes, I can fly around the moon and far beyond the skyAnd one day soon I know there you’ll be –One small voice in the universe, One true friend in the universeWho believes in me.

JojoI’m alone in the universe, so alone in the universeMy own planets and stars are

HortonAre alone in the universe

JojoGlowing. No one notices anything, no one person is listening They don’t have any way of knowing.

Horton and JojoNobody knows that I have wings. Yes I can flyAround the moon and far beyond the sky.Well, someday soon, you will hear my pleaOne small voice in the universe

JojoOne true friend in the universe

HortonPlease believe in me.

Thing 1Watch out, here comes the Sour Kangaroo. Boy does she have attitude!

Sour Kangaroo sings Biggest Blame Fool segment. (CD)

Sour KangarooHumpf! Humpfed a voice. Twas a sour kangarooAnd the young kangaroo in her pouch said “Humpf!” too. Why, that speck is as small as the head of a pin.A person on that? Why, there never has been! You’re the biggest blame fool in the Jungle of NoolAnd I don’t care who I tellThe biggest blame fool in the Jungle of Nool andI think so as well.Maybe I’m nasty, maybe I’m cruelBut you’re the biggest blame fool in the Jungle of Nool!

Thing 2 and Thing 3

15

But we liked Gertrude and Mayzie! They were so funny.

Mayzie and GertrudeThis show is getting way too long So sorry Things, but we can’t sing our song! (they laugh and high 5 at their rhyme)

MayzieBut it is time for a stretch break, so everybody up (motions the audience to stand)

GertrudeAnd now lets all sing Green Eggs and Ham!!

Mayzie and Gertrude point to CD crew and they lead everyone in Green Eggs and Ham (CD). Characters on stage dance as they sing it.

Thing 7I’m noticing that nothing was the same every year. With each show, elements changed depending on what the goal was. Under African Stars, our March show, is a great example. Actors portrayed characters from different African legends while the Storyteller told the story and danced. The actors had to move like their character and also manage a mask. This is hard to do. The Storyteller’s dialogue was all recorded. She had to create moves to fit the words. She moved and danced the whole show – wow! And, we had live drummers! It was a night to remember.

Lions come up and dance with their masks.

Thing 7Seussical and Africa were big successes at the box office. Please stand if you were part of that success!

Thing 8In drama classes last year we studied the elements of theater through folk and fairy tales from around the world. So it only fit that our fall show would be the classic Broadway musical Into the Woods, a blending of many well-known fairy tale characters and what happens when they all meet in a new story. The goal with this show was to keep the characters strong and true to their own story while reacting to the situations in the new tale.

Lights dim, Cinderella’s prince and Rapunzel’s prince take their places on stage.

Rapunzel’s Prince

16

Ah, there you are, good brother. Father and I had wondered where you had gone.

Cinderella’s PrinceI have been looking all night. . .for her. The beautiful one I danced the evening with.

Rapunzel’s PrinceWhere did she go?

Cinderella’s PrinceDisappeared.Rapunzel’s PrinceI too have founds a lovely maiden. She lives in the top of a tall tower that has no door or stairs.

Cinderella’s PrinceAnd how do you manage a visit?

Rapunzel’s PrinceI stand beneath her tower and say, “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair to me.” And then she lowers the longest, most beautiful head of hair – yellow as corn – which I climb to her.

Cinderella’s PrinceRapunzel! What kind of name is that? You jest!

Rapunzel’s PrinceShe is as true as your maiden. A maiden running from a Prince? Does that make sense? None would run from us.

Cinderella’s PrinceYet one has.

They sing Agony (CD)

Cinderella’s PrinceDid I abuse her or show her disdain? Why does she run from me?If I should lose herHow shall I regainThe heart she as won from me?

AgonyBeyond power of speech

17

When the one thing you wantIs the only thing out of your reach.

Rapunzel’s PrinceHigh in her tower,She sits by the hour,Maintaining her hair,Blithe and becoming,And frequently hummingA lighthearted air.hums Rapunzel’s themeAh-ah- ah- ah- ah- ah- ah-

Agony!Far more painful than yours,When you know she would go with you,If there only were doors.

Both PrincesAgony!Oh the torture they teach!

Cinderella’s PrinceAlways ten steps behind-

Rapunzel’s PrinceAlways ten feel below—

BothAnd she’s just out of reach.AgonyThat can cut like a knife!I must have her to wife. They exit in each other’s arms.

Thing 8At Rosa Parks we like tradition and we also like change, so I am going to break with the tradition going in this show and ask our most important question now – stand if you were an actor in Into the Woods or yes, our big show, that classic tale Beauty and the Beast. Mrs. Livingston, are you standing? You kept up the tradition of the Rosa Parks principal being in a show and you topped it by having your grandson Jackson starring with you!

Lights dim and characters go on stage. Belle and the Beast are in the center facing each other. Lumiere, Cogsworth, and Mrs. Potts are at one end, listening.

18

BeastBelle, I…

BelleYes-

BeastBelle, are you happy here?

BelleOh, yes…everyone’s so kind. Mrs. Potts, Lumiere…

BeastWith me?

BelleYes.

Beast gets his courage up –

BeastI must speak from…

Lumiere, Cogsworth…the heart!

Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts exitBelle looks away

BeastIs something wrong?

BelleI was just thinking about my father. I miss him so much. I wish I could see him again.

BeastThere is a way. Holds out the mirrorThis mirror will show you anything…anything you wish to see.

BelleI’d like to see my father, please. Papa? Oh, no Papa! Something’s wrong! He’s in the woods. I think he is lost. I should..I should-

19

Beast with difficultyGo to him.

BelleWhat?

BeastYou should go to him.

BelleBut what about –

BeastYou’re not my prisoner, Belle. You haven’t been for a long time. Take the mirror with you. So you’ll always have a way to look back. .and remember me.

BelleI could never forget you.

BeastGo, go.

Belle exits

BeastI’ll never see her again.

Cogsworth, Lumiere and Mrs. Potts enter

CogsworthWell, Sire, I must say – everything is going just swimmingly. I knew you had it in you!

BeastI let her go.

CogsworthYou what?

LumiereHow could you do that?

Beast

20

I had to.

CogsworthBut why?

Mrs. PottsAfter all this time, he’s finally learned to love.

LumiereThat’s it then! That should break the spell!

Mrs. PottsIt’s not enough. She has to love him in return.

CogworthAnd now it’s too late.

Lights go out and they exit. Thing 9 & Thing 10 come on

Thing 9Beauty and the Beast, what a beautiful love story.

Baloo and Mowgli come running on –

BalooDo you know that old saying “What goes around-“

MowgliComes around” ???

Thing 9I sure do and we could say that about you, couldn’t we! Jungle Book came back for some more fun just this year, in fact, this past December. Different script, different actors, different staging, but the same fun and laughter and making of memories. Thanks you guys!

High 5 Balou and Mowgli and they run off.

Thing 9Those two crazy guys – always off doing something. Now where was I?Oh, yes, Beauty and the Beast, well really in all our shows, the characters had to change and solve problems and through the change there was always a happy ending – it was all good.

21

One thing we have learned is that any time a play is produced it is unique, based on all the people who participate and make it what it is. And it does take the whole community of Rosa Parks to make this happen! That’s what makes the whole process so special. We are thankful for all the past actors who set the bar high, all the parents who made costumes, did make up, built scenery and props, and helped with all the details. This has been a tradition since 2006 and continues on today. Please stand if you are a parent who has supported us in the past or in the present.

We are also thankful to the staff at Rosa Parks who not only join us in the fun of production, but support us every step of the way. Please stand if you are on staff or have been on staff at Rosa Parks.

Thing 10What I have learned tonight is no matter what changes are made, some things are always the same – the laughter and pride, the hectic moments when it seems the show will never come together, the fun and the friendships that grow. These will all be there in the future. I can hardly wait, can you?

Thing 9In 2007, the year we opened, Megan Armstrong was in 4th grade and her teacher was Mr. Anderson. In our show The History of Rock and Roll, Megan told Mrs. Van that she wanted to sing a duet with Mr. Anderson. This was the spirit and soul of the drama program – students taking initiative, working with others (yet alone your teacher) and owning the production. This spirit continues and is alive and well at Rosa Parks today. To close our show, Megan, now a senior at Redmond High School and Mr. Anderson, well, yes, he is older too, will sing once again.

Megan and Mr. Anderson come on the stage. Band plays Changes.

I still don't know what I was waiting forAnd my time was running wild

A million dead-end streetsEvery time I thought I'd got it made

It seemed the taste was not so sweet

So I turned myself to face meBut I've never caught a glimpse

Of how the others must see the fakerI'm much too fast to take that test

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes(Turn and face the stranger)

Ch-ch-Changes

Don't want to be a richer manCh-ch-ch-ch-Changes

(Turn and face the stranger)Ch-ch-Changes

I watch the ripples change their sizeBut never leave the streamOf warm impermanence and

And these children that you spit onAs they try to change their worldsAre immune to your consultations

They're quite aware of what they're going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes(Turn and face the stranger)

Ch-ch-ChangesDon't tell them to grow up and out of it

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes(Turn and face the stranger)
