Thanks for expressing an interest in MAP 3M. The following pages will give you a more detailed explanation of what to expect on your 3 months with us. Screen Acting: The first 6 weeks of the course will cover all of the essentials for Screen Actors, from discussing your casting and USP’s, remaining open and engaged, playing your space and emotional connection to dealing with the complexities of hitting marks and continuity. All of this will be whilst maintaining a truthful and consistent inner monologue. Working with incredible detail, actors will fully realise the intensity of Screen Acting with one of the countries leading practitioners with a raft of on-screen experience. The next 6 week block will begin with a Screen Writing workshop to spark creative juices and begin to develop their own 2 minute scripts, in pairs. Our actors will spend 4 hours with a top Manchester writer using techniques to develop their own ideas and allow them an insight into the process of writing for stage and screen. In the following weeks, these short scenes will be professionally filmed whilst the actors not only put into practice the techniques they have worked on in previous weeks but also spend time behind the camera and getting to grips with the basics of ‘crew life’ as they work alongside our professionals, giving them a fully-rounded view of ‘on-set’ life. The final week will see them put their professional preparation sessions and audition technique classes into action, as they audition in front of a top level industry Casting Director who will be shown their Showreel scenes. Each actor will then receive specific feedback on their audition. Improvisation For The Actor: Contrary to popular belief, the Improvisation course is not solely about being funny, but uses the techniques of Augusto Boal, Uta Hagen, Stanislavski, Meisner and more to hone the instinct and listening of the actor. Over a series of games and exercises, the actors will work towards the goal of finding a comfortable state of mind in the studio, working with others without watching or censoring themselves. As the course progresses, the depth and connection to scenes and scenarios will allow the actors to truly explore the communications between each other, in varying given circumstances. The skills developed will be directly transferrable to their work in Scene Study and Screen Acting and used towards their overall development as an actor both in the rehearsal room and beyond. Acting Principals and Scene Study: These two modules run consecutively, using the skill from the first 3 weeks to take forward into their following work and Showcase. This class introduces actors the principles of Stanislavski and Uta Hagen with regards to breaking down and mining a script in order to develop characters and the worlds in which plays exist. Actors will undertake several exercises to underpin and develop the foundations of their own process in the Scene Study rehearsals and in their professional life. The initial stages will share a platform with Improvisation, movement and voice modules as actors are encouraged to be free in the space and trust their instincts in achieving basic objectives, recognising played actions and dealing with obstacles. These

skills are then taken forward as we ask them to apply these developed skills to a play-text which will be worked on for several weeks and shared in a professional theatre for invited guests and industry professionals. During the process, actors will develop their process using different techniques and skill-sets which they can take forward into their professional careers. As part of the process, Movement and Voice practitioners will be working with the actors to achieve a wholistic approach to their methods,

encompassing all elements of their training in the lead up to their performance. Meisner: As part of broadening an actors overview of the industry and equipping them with sufficient tools to develop their own creative process, the course will give two, 4-hour Meisner workshops, over 2 weeks, with one of the Country’s leading Meisner Practitioners. Through carefully layered exercises they will move from the very simple engaging with fellow actors, to elaborate improvisations with strong emotional connections with circumstance and preparation. This increasingly popular technique requires you to listen, react and act instinctively, and is an essential part of an actor’s skillset. These workshops will underpin and remind our actors of the need for a playful, passionate and fearless attitude after taking part in the Improvisation classes, furthering their understanding of their rehearsal room etiquette and need for imagination in performance. Voice For The Actor: Voice is a vastly underestimated tool for actors, particularly with the rise of a new style of screen acting; the mumble! For 4 weeks, actors will be working towards a

complete awareness of body and voice as one of the primary means of expression in all mediums. Students will work on a range of techniques and methodologies with an industry expert, focussing on posture, release, breath control and articulation. All classes will be aimed towards adding to the actors’ final pieces, both on screen and stage and guiding our actors to recognising the importance of vocal range, projection and control in portraying truthful and embodied characters. Movement For The Actor: Acting across all mediums requires the body to be fully connected to the task at hand; it is a physical process. Again, somewhat overlooked in the lower echelons of training, the ability to have an aware and articulate body is incredibly important and over the 4 weeks of contact hours, an industry professional will guide our actors through various elements of fundamental, physical work, beginning with the awareness of the body and moving to touch upon how important the truthful embodiment of a character can limitlessly improve performances, through connecting thought, speech and movement. These classes will also provide a series of exercises to improve awareness of postural alignment, stamina and flexibility. This movement work will also overlap rehearsals for Scene Study, inputting into their character work, in a 4-hour support session.

Professional Prep & Mock Auditions: A huge part of an actor’s arsenal is the ability to successfully represent themselves in an audition scenario, whether this be for stage or screen. Over several workshops, placed throughout the 12 weeks, actors will be worked with on audition technique, sight-reading, the quick dissection of scripts, making appropriate choices and self-presentation as well as group audition scenarios and workshops. Every individual will also take place in mock-auditions with industry professionals from the TV ad Stage industry, with detailed feedback. This offers not only the chance to improve their audition technique but gives them some exposure to casting directors, producers & directors. MAP will aim to encourage an actor’s independence, self-awareness and independence as they graduate from the course. Showcase Performance: All students will be given the chance to perform their rehearsed scenes as part of a Showcase performance, in a professional and working Manchester Theatre. The Showcase will also share the actors self-penned and edited scenes, thus providing them with a multi-media platform to present to industry professionals from across all fields. Students will rehearse and technical rehearse in the space on the day of performance before presenting their pieces to invited guests in an evening, public Showcase. Why Choose MAP? MAP was established to fill a gap in the market in 2015 – the gap wasn’t an economic opportunity for us, but for you the actors. Courses, services and classes were so incredibly expensive and, given that all of the MAP team are active in the industry, we understood just how important it was to provide what you, as artists, need at an affordable price. Since then, we have grown considerably. As we approach another birthday, we now run regular classes in all disciplines and have forged a name for ourselves as affordable, professional and rigorous. On top of that we have formed a Production Company – MAP Prods – who regularly produce work to rave reviews, receiving nominations in the Northern Soul Awards and Manchester Theatre Awards in our infancy. We now manage Manchester’s largest and most versatile Fringe Theatre 53two where we continue to work and produce. We have also successfully launched our own Repertory Company, producing 4 shows and a Showcase for our 12 actors, chosen from over 200 applicants. All of the actors that work with MAP Prods are paid for their services. Thus, with our short history creating such a difference in Manchester, we feel that we can provide you with a training that is not only complete, but perfect for those just starting or those wishing to hone their skills, and keep their ‘actors’ tool-kit’ active. All of our staff are still teaching at the country’s top drama schools and still working actively in their field; acting, directing, coaching. Because of this, your training is not only thorough but also as current as it can be, directly reflecting the industry as it is now, today, in line with the ebb and flow of its ever-changing parameters. MAP 3M continues to provide the same affordable courses but with this course, offering a comprehensible and holistic training. www.maplatfor.co.uk/map-3m [email protected]
