WHAT CAN I RECYCLE?

Paper and Cardboard RecyclingRecycling 1 tonne of paper or cardboard saves:

• 13 trees• 2.5 barrels of oil• 4 cubic metres of landfill• 31,780 litres of water• 4,100 kw of electricity

Steel and Aluminium Cans• Every tonne of new steel made from scrap

steel saves 1,131kg of iron ore, 54kg of limestone and 633kg of coal (cleanup.org.au)

• It takes around 15,000 steel cans to form 1 tonne of recycled steel (wasteinfo.com.au)

Plastics• Australians use more than 7kg of plastic

per person each year (waverley.nsw.gov.au)• Some brands of wheelie bins are made up

of approximately 50% recycled content; up to 125 milk bottles are used in each bin (toxfree.com.au)

Glass Jars and Bottles• Approximately 80% of recovered glass

containers are recycled into new glass (gpi.org)

• Glass can be recycled infinity times• Recycling 1 glass bottle saves enough energ

to light a 100 watt bulb for 4 hours (gpi.org)• Making glass from recycled material require

only 40% of the energy used to make glass from sand (cleanup.org.au)

The 3 R’sThere are 3 easy steps for making less waste:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.Reducing waste is important for:Ÿ Protecting the EnvironmentŸ Protecting our HealthŸ Saving Money

REDUCE - Reducing waste includes rethinking what we buy and use, and refusing things we don’t need. For example: try reducing your use of ‘single use’ items such as bottled water and plastic bags, and choose alternatives that can be used again, i.e. reusable water bottles, cloth shopping bags, re-usable shopping bags and lunch boxes.

REUSE - Giving your items more than one life can reduce a lot of waste. Get creative and re-use old tin cans, containers, clothing, building materials or bags. Other ways to reuse include: donating old unwanted clothes or furniture to charity, use plastic shopping bags as bin liners, turning old containers or tin cans into storage containers for pens, buttons, nails or lollies!

RECYCLE - Involves the collection, sorting and reprocessing of discarded goods to create the same or a different product. Recycling, like reducing and reusing, not only helps minimise the amount of

waste we send to the landfill but also protects precious resources and natural environments for future

generations.t

Lets start thinking about what we REALLY NEED and refusing what we don’t. That way, we can save natural resources, reduce waste, and help the environment!
