UNTIMELY DEPARTURE OF A VISIONARY

Dr. Pradeep Thevannoor, the late Vice Chairman of SCMS Group, was a great visionary and a

source of inspiration for all of us at SCMS Group. He wanted to take SCMS to great heights in

quality and excellence. A man of fertile imagination and untiring energy he was in a hurry to

accomplish his pet projects. SCMS Engineering College was closest to his heart. He was also the

guiding force and inspiration behind SCMS School of Architecture and projects like SCMS Water

Institute, Biotechnology Research Centre, the now famous Neera, biofuel from coconut oil, the

antidiabetic tea powder ‘Stevia Tea’ and a host of other activities. They were all products inspired

and initiated by him. Widely travelled, his unfinished mission was spreading the wings of SCMS

to London and Bangalore by establishing academic institutions. He died on his way to Bangalore

for project evaluation on 17.11.2014 when his car collided with a truck and died instantly. As

was his nature he lived for SCMS and died for it.

How we teach and transform our studentsSCMS education is rich, demanding and transformative. The mastery demonstrated by SCMS graduates across the professional and vocational spectrum and the influence they wield - whether in their own communities or on the world stage - is testament to a singularly empowering postgraduate experience. SCMS education fosters in students the highest standard of readiness for the 'real world,' in terms of their ability to think, to act and to contribute effectively in their chosen areas of interest. We give special focus to areas given below:

Skill in communicationOne must have the ability to effectively communicate in a friendly way. Though this looks easy one needs tremendous amount of training to achieve this ostensibly simple skill.

Interpersonal skills & teamworkGetting on with people is an art in which only very few people excel. One can learn this art through proper training. To be a member of a team one has to have the skill to get on with people.

Ethical & Moral ValuesA socially responsible manager always adds an ethical dimension to whatever he does to promote his

business and continuously inculcates in his team a sense of value aimed at the well-being of the society. SCMS COCHIN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ensures every student leaves its campus with a firm belief in ethical and moral values.

EmpathyHumaneness and understanding of feelings and problems of others are also qualities that have to be inculcated in future managers by training.

Analytical skills & decision makingAn analytical mind is a product of training. When a person confronts a problem or faces a situation or has multiple choices from which to select one, his mind is put to strain. A well trained analytical mind will have enough data in store to take correct decisions.

The art of negotiationA business professional will be called upon to negotiate hundreds of things everyday. Training helps him avoid pitfalls and leads his family or organisation to success.

Self confidenceIt is impossible for one to succeed if one lacks self-confidence. This process of developing self-confidence calls for careful nurturing and hence the emphasis on building self-confidence through training.

Empowering skillsWe bring in experts from wherever they are, to train and sharpen the faculties of our students in all the skills referred to here, and to empower them to face the challenges of the KNOWLEDGE DRIVEN twenty first century.

Mentoring - an innovative approach in learningOn admission, the students are divided into small groups. Each group is attached to a faculty mentor who will be their friend, philosopher and guide for the next two years of their study at the School. These groups meet frequently to analyse what they have studied the previous week or what they have read in the library or maybe to discuss an issue anyone in the group did not understand properly. Members of these groups make regular presentations on current topics. The faculty member will closely monitor all the activities of the group attached to him and mentor them. This programme helps the students shed their inhibitions, develop communication skills and become good public speakers and communicators. Students also learn the intricacies of human relations, methods of problem solving and decision making.

This programme effectively supplements the personality development programmes conducted by renowned experts.

Integrated management learning programme (IMLP)Integrated Management Learning Programme is an innovative learning system in management wherein every student is guided and activated to develop his skills in communication, presentation, interpersonal relations, public speaking etc. to ensure that the student becomes a successful manager in today’s competitive market-driven economy. ‘Practice makes one perfect’ is the principle behind this programme.

Interactive learning processCurriculum and Pedagogy ensures efficient delivery through an interactive learning process.

Leadership SkillsIn tune with our vision the students are trained and inculcated in them qualities of Leadership through various curricular and co-curricular activities.

Sri. T.P. Sreenivasan, former Ambassador of India to the UN and vsiting faculty of SCMS, addressing students.

SCMS COCHIN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Kalamassery, on Entrepreneurship and the Possibilities of Integrating Entrepreneurship onto the PGDM/MBA curriculum.

Success is essentially a sum total of many parts. A fully developed personality has prime of place in achieving success. Hence our emphasis is on

Personality Development Programmes (PDP).

SCMS COCHIN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS rose to national eminence as a leading business school by establishing its supremacy in transforming students from a raw platform to a high level of overall proficiency. Corporates found our teaching and training system highly relevant to their requirement. We bring in experts from anywhere in India or abroad for training and developing our students.

Students are also exposed to outbound training programmes at exotic places like Munnar to develop their team building and leadership skills.

An outstanding feature of our system is the stress we give to the development of the overall personality of every enrolled student. We conduct a series of programmes with external experts to develop and sharpen the skills in communication, inter-personal relations, analytical ability, proficiency in public speaking, assertiveness, self-confidence, interview techniques and a variety of other aspects that are essential for a manager.

No short-cut to success

A student who completes two years of study at SCMS COCHIN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS will be a consummate public speaker, an adept in effective communication and an expert in human relations. SCMS COCHIN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS is nationally known as the pioneer in introducing personality development programmes as a part of its business education.

It is our success in this field that made The Week news magazine to write that “the teaching and training system in SCMS is the most industry relevant one.”

THE KEY TO SUCCESS

Manual of PolicyIT IS A POLICY STATEMENT OF SCMS COCHIN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS. MUST BE READ BY ALL AND ADHERED TO.

Management Development ProgrammesSeveral national and international Management Development Programmes are held every year at SCMS COCHIN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS. Students get opportunities to interact with managers and executives of different levels from various industrial organisations. These programmes supplement regular interface programmes held at the campus. Wipro, the technology business giant, has chosen SCMS COCHIN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS to train their executives on various aspects of modern management. The Carborandum Universal, the Chennai based industrial conglomerate, the Kerala State Financial Enterprises, Coconut Development Board, India Post, Indian Oil dealers and Alliance Cornhill, the US based giant also have identified us as trainers for their Indian executives.

We have also trained several teams of executives of the Saudi Arabian Government. Each batch of trainees stayed with us for two weeks. Some of these programmes are ongoing and regular.

Page 15: SCMS - PGDM Pospectus 2015.indd

We conduct interface sessions periodically by inviting practising managers of different

disciplines. There is a lively question & answer session where the practitioner will talk about the problems he faces and solutions he arrives at. He will also build up rapport with the students, making every session an experience for both.

These interactive sessions provide practical insights into problem solving and decision making. These interface sessions are followed by rapport building. This is again followed by case study discussions so that the students have a real picture of the business operations they are soon to jump in. These programmes are organised by the students themselves with active support from the faculty and management.

Interactive programmes - industry interfaceSCMS COCHIN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS excels in the matter of industry interface programmes. For the batch which came out in 2010 SCMS COCHIN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS organised 90 programmes with Indian industry leaders and academicians from India and from Harvard, Singhua University, Georgia Tech University, Mercer University and Hebrew University.Distinguished guests from industry and government visit SCMS COCHIN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS regularly and share their wisdom and expertise with students.
