iKen SCIENTIFICA iKen Scientifica is India’s largest science and technology competition started in the year 2007. It is a concept that inlays a platform where a child can experience the real essence of science and its existence in a unique competition setup. It exposes children to practical scenarios and problem statements to test not just their understanding of science but also their ability to put it to use. It focuses on creation of innovative ideas amongst children where they explore and experiment with their curiosity. It is an expedition to discover the true genius of science. Being a competition of global scale, iKen Scientifica is a confluence of diverse ideas and talents across the globe. From prototyping scientific innovations, social improvement, model making to sumo robot wrestling to life-size chess tournaments, iKen Scientifica presents a hands-on learning experience for students. It develops life skills covered through team building, leadership, communication and presentation. In most cases, learning science at elementary and secondary level is limited to textbook learning with little or no emphasis laid on experimentation, ideation and innovation. iKen Scientifica aims to fill this gap by bringing a systematic progression of stages wherein a child is introduced to various aspects of science in a naturally engrossing manner. In a nutshell:

How is it different from existing run-of-the-mill competitions? It helps children learn effectively by being involved. We believe that the participants would

learn a lot more while participating in the competition than while preparing for it.

The primary objective is to bring out the best in every participant. iKen Scientifica focuses more on assessing strengths and weaknesses and not ranking students based on their marks.

Participants create working scientific models with simple modular material. Our experts help students understand the science behind the working examples.

Inculcates a sense of healthy competition among the participants, as they get to compete against the best minds across the country and across the globe.

Participants learn important life skills like teamwork, leadership and resource management.

Improves the interpersonal skills like market scenarios, negotiation, and resource allocation.

The parents can also participate along with the child during complimentary workshops.

Genesis iKen Scientifica is an expedition, which re-affirms the fact that education begins with posing questions. Realizing the importance of hands-on activities for effective science education, iKen Scientifica invites children to utilize their imagination and curiosity and think out of the box. One does not require an elaborate preparation for any of the competition stages. A good test is the one in which students will do well if they really understand the material. Participants who embody an optimum combination of creativity, observation, common sense, intelligence and diligence will emerge as the ‘Student Icons of India’.


The purpose of iKen Scientifica is to familiarize the students with technology conducive to scientific learning and to improve their investigative, analytical and critical thinking abilities. It presents students with an opportunity to interact with peers and educational experts across the globe serving as a melting pot of diverse ideas and cultures. It helps children:

ELIGIBILITY The competition is open for students of grade 4 to 9 between the age group of 8 to 14 yrs. The competition is organized in three different levels according to difficulty levels and comprehension abilities: Level 1: Grade 4 & Grade 5 students Level 2: Grade 6 & Grade 7 students Level 3: Grade 8 & Grade 9 students

STAGES iKen Scientifica is an annual competition organized in four competition stages:

Stage 1: The School Round Stage 1 is a 1 hour long MCQ-based written test conducted at respective schools or at other designated centers. The questions relate to logical reasoning, everyday science, observations, practical application-based understanding of scientific principles. The test is designed to assess the students on five parameters, namely Observation, Analytical skills, Practicality, Memory and Extrapolation. A mathematical index is derived from these parameters which unlike a percentage or a percentile score. It does not rank the students’ performance but derives his/her learning preferences along with the relative strengths and weaknesses among the defined parameters. This index is known as the 'Enterprise Index'. The Enterprise Index reflects how well an individual utilizes these skills together. It helps to objectively identify the most beneficial learning techniques for each child.


Upon registration, all students will receive a preparatory book along with their admit cards. This preparatory book contains elaboration on the ‘Design and Technology methodology’, sample case studies, and previous year’s questions solved through the described approach. The stage gets conducted at respective schools. The top three students receive gift hampers and vouchers in prizes.

Stage 2: The Zonal Round Stage 2 is a hands-on competition based in a real world marketplace simulation. This stage of the competition encourages a child to apply scientific principles to practice and thus gain deeper understanding through hands-on experience. The ‘Market Place’ is specially developed to test a child on how good he/she can be at invention and scaling it to impact human life. In this round, children are given a problem statement as a line of thought around which they have to come up with a unique idea. This idea needs to be turned into an invention that solves the problem scenario. It is important to understand that an invention is of use only if it is affordable. They use virtual value currency as a means to buy raw materials to create their inventions. They are then encouraged to sell off their inventions in the market. The better the model, in terms of functionality, design, innovation, efficiency, etc., more becomes its selling price. The students selected for the next stage will be titled iKen Scientifica 'City Champs' and will be awarded with a gold medal. The runner ups receive silver and bronze medals along with gift vouchers. Similar to Stage 1, Stage 2 also consists of a preparatory booklet that is given to qualified participants upon registration for Stage 2.

Stage 3: The National Finals Out of all the participants, select candidates known as City Champs from each venue of the Zonal Round. They will get the opportunity to compete at a National level platform with the best minds of the country. Stage 3 is a one-day event organized in all the participating countries. National Finals aim at testing the holistic approach towards problem solving with a mix of individual and team-based rounds, such as computer-based simulation and contraption design, designing high end machines, board games, interpersonal activities and many more. The National Final formats are unique and are not revealed to participants with its flow and content differing from year to year. Along with the city champs, we invite school representatives from respective schools to visit us at the National Finals and experience the broad range of competitions and get exposure through panel discussions among renowned educational professionals. All the arrangements and costs for your visit are borne by iKen Scientifica management. 12 students emerge as the iKen Scientifica 'Student Icons' of the country. All national ‘Student Icons’ will represent India at iKen Scientifica international finale. They will get a chance to be feature on a TV and the national educational magazine ‘i-Scientia’. The runner ups will represent India at 2013 International ‘GreenMech’ contest held by Genius Toys. All winners and runner ups will also receive other exciting prizes and hampers.

Stage 4: The International Finals International Final is organized at one of the hosting countries. It is a one-day event where national finalists from each country fly to the hosting destination to represent their respective nations. The travel, stay and food arrangements of all international finalists are borne by iKen Scientifica management. The 12 national 'Student Icons' will represent India at the International Finals. They will compete with the Student Icons from over 17+ countries across the globe. Finally, 12 winners will bag the 'Global Icon' title. The iKen Scientifica Global Icons will win a fully sponsored trip to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), USA. The winner will feature on a national television programme. Educational Scholarships, Laptops and other goodies are also up for grabs.
