Dear Fellow Botanists

You will be pleased to know that the 39th ALL INDIA CONFERENCE OF THE INDIAN BOTANICAL SOCIETY AND NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON “NEW APPROACHES AND RECENT CHALLENGES IN BOTANY” will be held in Ranchi under the Presidentship of PROF. S.M. REDDY, (WARANGAL) during October 21—23, 2016 at the University Department of Botany, Ranchi University, Ranchi, under the support and guidance of PROF. R.K. PANDEY, HON'BLE VICE CHANCELLOR, RANCHI UNIVERSITY, RANCHI. It is a matter of great pleasure to invite all IBS members to participate in the Scientific Sessions, Symposium, Poster Presentations and other activities of the conference for a free exchange of views and scientific interaction.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL SYMPOSIUMThe study of Botany now incorporates several frontiers in basic as well as applied lines of research, specially linking many branches of Science to place the subject into the forefront. It attracts attention of everyone on earth and more so as its connectivity extends to the living of human race. At the same time it has forced us to meet number of challenges like in case of any other scientific study. The thought in botanical renovation not only impresses to accept the novelty in Botany, also to revisit its old but premier branches in appropriate order.

ABOUT RANCHIRanchi, the capital of Jharkhand (India), is situated at 23°22’N and 85°20’E, at an average elevation of 651 m. above the sea level. Owing to a combination of hilly topography and dense tropical forests, Ranchi experiences a relatively moderate climate vis-a-vis the other parts of Jharkhand. It was primarily for these climatic reasons, that Ranchi remains a much-preferred hill-station and was designated as ‘the summer-capital of Bihar (undivided)’. The weather of Ranchi at the time of conference is expected to be pleasant and salubrious.

The city is well-connected to all parts of India via Road, Rail and Air linkages. Among other highways, the NH 33, NH 23 and NH 75, pass through Ranchi and connect it with neighbouring states. The Ranchi (RNC) and Hatia (HTE) railway junctions within the town-area, connect with Chennai, Raipur, Bhubaneshwar, Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities. The Birsa Munda Airport links Ranchi with Patna, Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

RANCHI UNIVERSITY, RANCHIThe Ranchi University was established on July 12, 1960. The geographical span of the University encompasses 5 districts of Jharkhand, namely — Ranchi, Gumla, Khunti, Simdega and Lohardaga.

These districts are inhabited predominantly by the tribal populace and the University takes pride in having successfully lived up to their expectations & aspirations during the 56 years of its existence. The University is constituted of 23 Post-graduate departments, 15 Constituent Colleges, and 49 Affiliated Colleges. These constituents impart education in Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Commerce, Medicine, Psychiatry, Law, Engineering, Business Management and Education etc. Besides these institutions, the University also operates the UGC sponsored Human Resource Development Centre. The Central Library of the University is fully automated, has INFLIBNET facility with online access to more than 5000 e-journals. The venue of the conference, the Institute of Basic & Applied Science building, was inaugurated by Her Excellency, the President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil, on December 10, 2010. The said venue houses the 6 major University Departments of Science, including Botany, the subject of our conclave.

THE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF BOTANYThe University Department of Botany was founded in 1955. The Department operates from the Institute of Basic & Applied Sciences building, under the guidance of Prof. AK Srivastava, Head of the Department & Dean, Faculty of Science. The Department has five special papers viz. Algal Biotechnology (FOUNDER: LATE PROF. JP SINHA); Microbiology and Plant Pathology (FOUNDERS: LATE PROF. M PRASAD, LATE PROF. DS SHUKLA & PROF. DP GUPTA); Cytogenetics, Plant Breeding, Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (FOUNDER: PROF. SSN SINHA); Plant Physiology, Biotechnology & Molecular Biology (FOUNDER: PROF. KK NAG) and Plant Taxonomy, Ethnobotany & Medicinal Plants (FOUNDER: PROF. TK GHOSH).

Apart from the Regular Course Programs, the Department also imparts education to 3 self-financed Vocational Courses viz. M.Sc. Biotechnology; Post-Graduate Diploma in Plant Biotechnology and Post-Graduate Diploma in Medicinal Plants. This Department has also been assigned with several UGC Major and Minor Research Projects. The University Department of Botany has published a vast number of Research Papers in various refereed National and International Journals. Besides, approximately 250 students have been awarded with Ph.D. degrees in Botany by the Ranchi University. The Department also awards D.Sc. degrees.

THE INDIAN BOTANICAL SOCIETYThe Indian Botanical Society (IBS) came into existence, as a result of a resolution passed by the Botany Section of THE INDIAN SCIENCE CONGRESS, at its Nagpur session in January, 1920. Thereby, a committee was constituted under the Chairmanship of DR. WINFILD DUDGEON, Ewing Christian College, Allahabad. The other members of the Committee included DR.
