Science: Living things and
their habitats - Plants
Year 5 Tuesday 23rd June
Recap
Function of each part of the flower
• Today we are going to look at each part of the flower in more detail
what job it does and how it helps the plant to reproduce.

Functions of each part of the flower
• We know that plants must produce seeds in order to reproduce.
And to make a seed a flower must be pollinated.
• So, just like actors in a play, each part of the flower has a role to
play. These parts are vital and pollination wouldn’t be able to take
place without any one of these.
Petals
It is the petal’s job to
attract the insects
towards the flower.
Interestingly, the colours
that we see are not the
same as the colours that
the insects see. Insects
see in ultraviolet, which is
a type of light which is
outside the range of what
human eyes can see.petal
The style is above the
ovary and its job is to
hold up the stigma. The
style, ovary and stigma
all make up the female
part of the flower, which
is called the 'carpel' or
'pistil'.

The stigma’s job is to collect
the pollen from other plants
when insects brush by it. It
has adapted to catch the
pollen in different ways e.g.
some stigma have tiny hairs
on them to collect the pollen.
It is on the stigma that
growing process first begins.

The filament’s role is to hold
up the anther. If the anther
was very low down, then
insects might not be able to
collect that flower’s pollen.
What would happen if pollen
was harder for insects to
collect?filament
Filament
The role of the anther is to
produce the pollen. It is
important that this pollen is
then carried to another plant.
Which part of the plant
would the pollen need to be
taken to?
anther
Anther
It is the ovary's job to hold
the ovules and to keep them
safe until the flower gets
pollinated. Then produce
seeds.

The job of the stigma is to .
The job of the stamen is to .
The job of the filament is to .
The job of the style is to .
The job of the anther is to .
The job of the ovary is to .
Task 2: Quiz Name the parts:
1. I am brightly coloured to attract insects –
2. I am made up of the anther and filament –
3. I produce pollen (male) –
4. I hold up the stigma -
5. I support the anther to make it accessible to insects –
6. I contains ovules, which when fertilised with pollen will swell and
produce fruit -
7. I have a sticky portion at the top of the style where the pollen
grains usually land –
Task 2: Quiz - answers
Name the parts:
1. Brightly coloured, attracts insects – petals
2. Made up of the anther and filament – Stamen
3. Produces pollen (male) – anther
4. I hold up the stigma - style
5. Supports the anther to make it accessible to insects – filament
6. Contains ovules, when fertilised with pollen these will swell and
produce fruit - Ovary
7. Sticky portion at the top of the style where the pollen grains
usually land – stigma
Task 3: Labelled diagram
Using your information from yesterday and today, create a detailed labelled
drawing of the inside of the flower.
Please include:
• Each part of the flower
• Label each part of the flower (use the previous slides to check for your
spellings)
• A sentence to explain the function of each part of the flower.
•Please colour lightly using pencils and draw your labelling lines with a ruler
and pencil.
•You can use the writing frame on the next slide to help you.
Extra challenge
• Can you make a 3D model of the inside of a flower.
