Hypothesis

An “if…then” statement that is an explanation for a problem that can be tested by making observations or performing experiments.

Page 3: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Control Group

• A group that does not receive the independent variable in an experiment.

Page 4: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Experimental Group

• The group that is exposed to the independent variable in an experiment

Page 5: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Independent Variable

• A factor that is changed or manipulated in an experiment

Page 6: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Dependent Variable

• The variable that is measured in an experiment

Page 7: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

X - Axis

• The line on a graph that runs horizontally (from left to right) through zero

Page 8: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Y - Axis

• The line on a graph that runs vertically (up to down) through zero.

Inference

• Reaching a conclusion by using logical reasoning

Page 10: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Volume

• The amount of space occupied by a solid, liquid, or gas.

Page 11: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Mass

• The amount of matter in an object.

Page 12: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Weight

• The force exerted on an object due to gravity.

Page 13: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Temperature

• A measure of the hotness or coldness contained in matter – also a measure of the kinetic energy of matter.

Page 14: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Meter

• The metric base unit of length

Page 15: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Liter

• The metric base unit of volume

Page 16: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Gram

• The metric base unit for mass

Page 17: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Celsius

• Temperature scale in which water freezes at 0 and boils at 100

Page 18: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Constants

• Variables in an experiment that are kept the same for all groups and trials

Page 19: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Quantitative

• Description of a measurement using numbers

Page 20: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Qualitative

• Description using words

Page 21: Science Fundamentals Unit Vocabulary

Bias

• Prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, that can alter the results of an experiment
