SpringMarch, April and May are the months of Spring. It is the time when the earth becomes green again. Once the cold winter passes, the ground becomes warm again and new life can emerge. It is a beautiful time of year!

Fun Fact!

In my hometown, Muskogee, OK there is a large park called Honor Heights Park. Every Spring, this park has an azalea festival to

celebrate all of the beautiful azaleas! They are so colorful!

Because Spring is filled with new vegetation, it is a great time to talk about plants. We will see the parts of the plant, what each part does and how they reproduces itself!

So here we go!!!!!!!!!!!!

Parts of the Plant

Roots are the part of the plant that grows under the ground. The roots are important because they carry water and minerals from the soil to the rest of the plant. Some vegetables that we eat are “root plants.” Can you guess which ones?

1. ROOTS

Page 6: Science

The stem grows above the ground. It holds up the plant, leaves and flowers. It is essentially a “pipe” to receive the nutrients from the roots and pass on to the rest of the plant. It is a vital part.

2. STEMWhere is the stem???

Page 7: Science

Leaves are attached to the stem or to branches that come from the stem. They are typically green. Leaves make the nutrients for the plant. And they breathe!

4. FLOWERNot only are flowers beautiful, but they are also very essential to the plant. They are the reproductive organ of the plant. Inside the flower is pollen. Pollination refers to the transportation of pollen to another flower. This can happen by wind, by water or by insects. Bees and butterflies are the two main insect transporters! Also seeds that are formed inside the flower can fall to the ground where a new plant can grow. This process is called germination.

And of course, a plant can not grow on it’s own. There are certain things it needs. Let’s watch this video to find out what they are!
