This newsletter has been designed to keep you up-to-date and is packed full with the latest news and information. www.nottinghambsf.co.uk Nottingham’s award-winning LEP is delighted to be shortlisted for two new awards in the Private Public Finance (PPF) Awards 2010. Some of the most respected and experienced professionals from the public and private sectors have selected Nottingham’s BSF programme to compete in two categories. ‘Best Education Project’ award - a category which acknowledges big programmes in the education sector. ‘Best Local Government Project Team’ award – specifically for Local Government project teams that have provided clear project leadership, leading to innovative deal structures and timely, efficient delivery of projects in 2009. Being shortlisted for these awards demonstrates the work being delivered across a range of partners who remain committed to delivering excellence in Nottingham. Winners will be announced on 13 May 2010. Awards success MAKING TOMORROW A BETTER PLACE TM Did you know? Nottingham’s Local Education Partnership (LEP) has already scooped the national award for excellence by winning ‘LEP of the Year’ at the annual ‘Excellence in BSF’ awards last year. Big Wood is to be fully completed in June 2010. Hadden Park High School now has Foundation School status. The school is now complete. Ellis Guilford is in early design and development stage. Construction work is planned to start late 2010/early 2011. Building Schools for the Future Wave 2 Rosehill School Financial Close has been reached to transform Rosehill School into a ‘Centre of Excellence’ for the education of children with autism in Nottingham. Contracts worth £8.6 million have been signed and construction work has started. Pupils have been temporarily relocated to the site of the former Shepherd School on Harvey Road in Bilborough. Construction work is due to be completed in April 2011. * View from roundabout

Outline Business Case approvedGreen light given to deliver final phase of BSF programme.

Partnerships for Schools have approved Nottingham’s Outline Business Case (OBC) for Wave5whichindicates£89mof newfundingforNottinghamCityCounciltocompletethetransformationof secondaryandspecialschoolsinthecity.

ThisnewfundingwillbenefitWestburySchool;WoodlandsSchool;TrinityComprehensive;TopValleyComprehensive;NottinghamBluecoatandTechnologyCollege;ManningGirls’School;andFernwood Comprehensive.

Learning Centres for vulnerable children and youngpeoplewhodonotattendschoolduetosickness,medicalreasons,becomingayoungmotherorbecausetheyarepermanentlyexcludedfrom school, will also benefit from the funding.

PHASE 1AGreenfieldsPhase1handedoversuccessfully on19April.Construction work has started on Blue Bell Hill School (final school in phase 1a)

PHASE 1BDesignisprogressingwellatSycamoreandStAnn’sWellPrimarySchoolswhicharebothinPhase1bof thePrimaryCapitalProgramme.Thedesignteamisworkingcloselywiththeschoolstounderstandthekeyareasforchangeandhowtodeliver these within the constraints of budget and the existing structure of the building.

TopValleyandTrinitySchoolsAn in-depth, facilitated visioning process has commenced at these schools thanks to the £33 million confirmed funding for these two sample schools.

Designed with cutting edge technologyintheclassroomandflexibleinspiringlearningspaces,thenewschoolnotonlyprovidesoutstanding facilities for pupils and staff, but also is arealassettothelocalcommunity.Thecompletionof SouthwarkPrimarySchoolmarksanimportantmilestone in Nottingham’s ambitious programme to transformlearningintheCityandwillprovidehighqualityteachingandlearningenvironmentsfornowand for generations to come.

Forest Recreation Ground

TheForestProjectsetuptorestore the Forest Recreation GroundonGregoryBoulevard, Nottingham to itsformerglory.Withthisprojectheadingintoitssecond phase, Nottingham’s LEP is getting involved to deliver non-educational projectsintheCitywhichdemonstrates the strength of the partnership in delivering capital build programmes.

Victoria Leisure Centre

Nottingham’s LEP is replacing the old centre with a newswimmingpool,whichwillformpartof themajorredevelopment scheme for Sneinton Square and Eastside area. Thenewcentre,willprovideamodernsix-lanefamilyswimmingfacilitywithseparatechildren’spoolandfunsplashplayarea,anewcafé/retailspace,gymandhealthsuites.Theexistingclocktowerwillbekeptbut the rest of the buildings will be replaced, creating a vibrant civic presence on Sneinton Market which is set to undergo its own transformation. Victoria Leisure Centre closed on 1 April 2010 so workcanstartondevelopinganewmodernfacilitytoopen in 2012.

*Recycling of redundant furniture InagreementwithNottinghamCityCouncil,theLEPcommissioned‘Green-Works’,anawardwinningregisteredcharity,toremovethesurplus/oldschoolfurniture.Thischaritypreventsadditional landfill and provides great value, highqualitylowcostsecondhandfurnituretobusiness,charities,schoolsandcommunitygroups,whilerecyclingtheremainder.

PrimaryExemplarProjectSouthwark Primary

First of its kind - Thenewmulti-millionpoundschoolisoneof thefirstprimaryschoolsinthecountrytoberebuiltundertheGovernment’sPrimaryCapitalProgrammeandisoneof only23stateof theartprimaryschoolstobebuiltinthecountryfollowingNottinghamCityCouncil’ssuccessful bid to become a Pathfinder Local Authority.

Ministerial Visit - Vernon Coaker, Labour MP forGedlingandMinisterof StateforSchoolsandLearners,visitedSouthwarkPrimarySchool.PupilsfromtheschooljoinedVernonCoakeronaguidedtour of their new school.

I’ve been the independent Chairman of inspiredspaces Nottinghamforjustoverninemonths.So,asI’mfairlynewtotheroleandasIonlyworkforthecompanyforafewdayseachmonth,it’sdifficulttodescribeatypicalworkingdayforme.Instead,I’vedecidedtogiveyousomeof myfirstimpressionsof theLEPandwhatwe’redoing,whytherole interested me and what I’ve been doing to learn more aboutthebusinesssothatIcanhopefully“addvalue”towhat we do.

Whenthejobwasadvertised,itwasoneof thosemomentswhen I knew the role was right for me and I believed I was rightfortherole!I’vealwaystriedtotakeaninterestinlocalaffairs and at one stage I was a Director of Nottingham Development Enterprise when we began promoting the developmentof theCity’stramsystem.Sincethattime,myinvolvementhasbeenminimal;sotheLEProlewasanopportunitytore-engage.

Perhapsmoreimportantly,whattheLEPwasdoingissomethingI’vebeenpassionateaboutforyears–theneedtoreinvestintheCountry’sageinginfrastructuretogiveusassetsfitforpurposeinthe21stcentury,ratherthanthe19thcentury.I’vespentmostof mycareerworkingforSevernTrentWaterandmanyyearsarguingwithMinistersand Regulators that we weren’t replacing Victorian assets quicklyenough.Butmymessageswereneverjustaboutthewaterindustry;I’darguedthatthesameissuesaffectedourroads,railways,hospitalsandschools.SowhenIrealisedthattheLEPwas“buildingschoolsforthefuture”,here was a programme I wanted to be part of.

EverythingI’veseensofaraboutinspiredspaces has impressedme.Itspeople,itsprocessesandsystemsanditsdeliveryrecordaresuperb.That’swhyitwasvotedLocalEducationPartnershipof theYearatlastyear’sBSFawards. Some of the highlights for me include:

• theintegrationof theCarillionandtheNottingham Cityteams;

• thegoodrelationshipwhichhasbeendevelopedwith CarillionBuilding;

• thestunningprogressonopeningnewschoolsandthe refurbishmentof otherschools;

• theabilitytowinotherwork,outsideof theBSF programme, like the Victoria Leisure Centre redevelopment;

• thecommitmenttosustainability–manyorganisationssimplypaylipservicetothe“Sword”.Withourcommitmenttolocaljobsforlocalpeople,thesourcingof materialsandsub-contractorsfromNGpostcodeareas, and some of the environmental schemes in schools,wearereallydemonstratingoursustainabilitycredentials.

Akeypartof myroleasLEPchairmanistocheckwithallour stakeholders whether we’re delivering against their expectations.Ialwaysliketohearwhatthecustomersare

saying.Soaretheexecutiveteamin the Council and the Councillors happywithourprogress;aretheHeadTeachersbeingengagedinthedevelopments;andhow can we continue to make improvements?

“Ontimeandonbudget”deliveryisaphraseusedinallbusinesstomeasurecapitalprojectsuccess.Itwillbeourschoolsdeliveryprogrammeagainstwhich we will continue to be measured, and, of course, delivering those inspired spaces in which this and future generationsaretolearn.If youhavetheopportunitytospeak to the children, teachers or parents who will be movingintoSouthwarkPrimaryorHaddenParkHighSchoolaftertheEasterbreak,justcheckif we’vedelivered!
