careers in retail

To find out more about retail careers visit:

Career Services: www.careers.govt.nz

The retail and wholesale industries have a wide range of workplaces covering many sectors, for example, food, fashion and technology. These industries offer diverse career roles, such as sales, marketing, IT and management.

Think about the things you are passionate about; there could be a role in there somewhere for you. For example, if you have an interest in cycling, maybe a job at a bike shop would excite you. If you love music, think about managing a music store.

Retail is a people business that offers exciting and challenging careers. Working in retail develops skills that are not only effective in the workplace but also in everyday life.

The retail and wholesale industries offer many exciting pathways and career opportunities, from small businesses to large corporate companies. They are diverse, varied and competitive industries which can provide attractive salaries and career opportunities.

Many successful retailers started out on the shop floor in sales, and have gone on to manage departments, stores or even a company by their mid-20s.

What is retail?

Retailing is all activities directly related to the sale of goods and services to consumers. Whatever products you use, need or want – the retail industry provides it!

Retail Institute and The Warehouse have partnered to offer students a taste of what it is like working in retail. Red Shirts in Schools is a programme based on theCustomerServiceAward(seemenuonpreviouspage)andiscontextualisedtoTheWarehouseenvironment. The aim of the programme is to offer students work experience and help them transition from school into the workplace.

Students participating in the programme will be supported by a coordinator. This coordinator will work with store management to ensure students get a good understanding of working in retail. They will also set clear development plans, provide inductions to students, assess students work and keep in touch with schools in their region.

Places are limited, so students wishing to participate in the programme must apply. For information on how to apply, email [email protected] or call 0800 486 738.

All contact must be made through Retail Institute or your local Red Shirts Coordinator. Schools should not contact The Warehouse stores directly for any region.

This programme is only available to schools in the Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch regions. Note: The Auckland Red Shirts in Schools programme will continue to run in a similar format as previous years.
