STRANDS WEEK 1 SUMMER TERM 2015

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents Welcome back for the Summer Term. There is always an excitement when we look at the events for this term, mixed with some tension as the girls prepare for the examinations. I hope that the Easter break went well and that you managed to get the most out of it. I used some of the time to visit our agents in Hong Kong which forms a vital part of our success in this market. Next week I am off for the final trip of the season to a British Education Exhibition in Korea for a few days, where I will be delivering a presentation on Moira House and the UK education system to Korean families and agents. The Summer Term traditionally sees a number of boarders arriving for the term, a number of whom will remain with us into next year. Boarding is quite full as a result. It has been necessary to adjust the facilities to accommodate this and I must thank everyone for their support. The standard of accommodation in boarding continues to be upgraded and many of the girls have returned to much improved facilities. This work will continue in the weeks ahead. The work continues around School House and we are really beginning to see the difference. The disruption is causing minor inconvenience, but everyone seems to be happy to support the progress. Internally we are upgrading our visitors and staff toilet facilities hopefully in time for Founder’s Day. I took some time out to watch the girls deliver an impressive victory over Eastbourne College in a Rounders match yesterday. I was particularly pleased as the College coach was my daughter! Thank you girls. Best wishes Mr James Sheridan Principal

TOWNER ART GALLERY ANNUAL SCHOOLS EXHIBITION In January, the Year 8s visited the Birling Gap Visitor Centre and the Towner Art Gallery to carry out research for their Spring Term Project. They have now completed it and their project will be displayed at the Towner Art Gallery’s Annual Schools Exhibition 2015 from Friday 27 March to Sunday 31 May 2015. We hope you have the opportunity to visit! If you would like more information on the Exhibition, please visit www.townereastbourne.org.uk

NEWS FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT We have had a busy start to the term with AS level recitals taking place this week and we welcomed Mr Jeremy James Taylor OBE in to School to start work with the girls on the Middle School Production - Bugsy Malone. We are delighted to say that all the girls who took ABRSM Music Exams last term passed their exams. Particular congratulations to Leah Hallinon (Grade 5 Flute) and Tianlu Wang (Grade 3 Violin) who achieved distinctions, and to Jiayi Wang who passed her Grade 7 Piano. Congratulations to all the girls who passed and achieved merits in these exams. Meanwhile some dates for your diary: Next Friday (1 May) girls in Years 10 - 13 will be performing in a 'gig night' in Swann Hall at 7.30 pm. This is an informal 'open mic' style evening and parents and students (in Year 10 upwards) are welcome to join us for this informal event. Beyond this we have many concerts and performances this term so keep an eye out for full details. In particular we would like to remind all parents and students that we will hold our annual Summer Concert in Swann Hall on Wednesday 6 May at 7pm.

PHIL THE BAG We are continuing our support of the innovative fundraising programme called ‘Phil the Bag’, which recycles your old and unwanted clothing and turns it into cash for the School. You can support this fundraising programme by donating your unwanted textiles to the School Office by no later than Friday 1 May 2015.

Click here to read more about ‘Phil the Bag’.

Mr Ryan Dray, IT Technician, ran his first marathon on Sunday 21 April and completed it in 4 hours 2 minutes! He raised an astonishing £1,567.00 for Cancer Research UK!

ROSANNA TONER FUNDRAISING FOR CLIC SARGET As some of you may know, Rosanna in Year 13 was planning to run the London Marathon on Sunday 26 April 2015 to fundraise for CLIC

Sargent. Unfortunately, during the Easter holidays, on her last long run in her training plan, she damaged her knee. Upon seeking medical advice it looks unlikely that she would be able to make the distance and therefore, regrettably, will not be participating in the event this year. The charity have deferred her place until next year when she hopes she will be fit and healthy to complete the marathon. The sponsorship raised by the School has been hugely appreciated and the £1,200 raised so far will be carried over to her fundraising total for next year. We wish Rosanna a speedy recovery and all the best in her training for 2016! Josephine Alexander, Year 11, is Climbing Mt Elbrus for MS Research Treatment and Education. She organised a Mufti Day on the last day of the Spring Term and raised £136.90. So far, she has raised over £870 in total!

WELCOME TO OUR SHORT STAY STUDENTS! We would like to say a big welcome to our new short stay students from France who are staying with us this term. They have settled in well so far this week. Isaure from Year 6 “My favourite thing about Moira House is the Teachers, they are all very sweet and helpful especially Mrs Kemp”. Pia from Year 5 “My favourite thing about Moira House is the sport and having lots of friends to play with”. Capucine from Year 5 “I really like the Science here at Moira House”.

UPDATE FROM MRS HARRIS MOSS It has been National Revision Week and the Sixth Form have been looking at resources available to them via the website www.nationalrevisonweek.co.uk. Here they can find lots of free resources to help get organised and on top of revision.

AN UPDATE FROM MRS VALLANTINE It has been lovely to see all the girls back in School this week. Examination groups are busy revising and a number of staff are offering additional classes. If your daughter is taking a public examination in the next few weeks and you have any queries about her progress, do not hesitate to contact her personal tutor or her Head of Key Stage.

ESSA SCHOOLS SWIMMING We wish the Junior girls good luck in the Regional Round of the ESSA Schools Swimming which is taking place in Guildford on Saturday 25 April 2015!

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS U11 & U10 Rounders v Skippers Hill The U11s enjoyed their first Rounders match of the season on Wednesday and what a great game it was! Skippers were leading by 71/2 rounders to 5 after the first innings and Moira House put heart and soul into their second innings in an attempt to close the gap. Great bowling from Megan Lee and some fine team batting saw our girls getting closer and closer to Skippers total score but sadly time ran out with Skippers winning the match. Well played, everyone! The U10 game, too, was well contested, with lots of girls from both teams playing their first ever Rounders match. Batting from both teams was good, and the game was high-scoring, with Skippers Hill winning by 18 rounders to 131/2. U18 Rounders v Eastbourne College The U18 girls played superb Rounders against Eastbourne College winning 12 – 4. There was fantastic bowling by Anna Davison and immense hitting from Nicky Manipanti. Tara Granea stole the show with the most athletic display of fielding at first post! U16 Bede's Tennis Tournament Members from our U15 Tennis team, consisting of Poppy Horne, Esther Palanca Romualdo, Chloe Hughes and Lucy Nottage, played very well at the U16 Bede’s Tennis tournament. The girls placed 2nd in their pool and received 3rd place in the Plate final! Well done to everyone.
