ABOUT THE DEAN

“Since God is the ground of everything that is, there’s a sense in which every human inquiry is grist to the theological mill.”

– Sir John Polkinghorne, theologian

At Colorado Christian University, we believe the universe was created by God, so everything in it must be understood with Him in mind. Nowhere is this more emphasized than in our School of Theology. Explore the Bible and great moments in the Christian church. Examine historic and current scholarship. Think carefully about your worldview and religious beliefs. Ask tough questions that dig deeper than knee-jerk answers. Serve in Denver and overseas.

MATT HARTMAN Major: Youth Ministry

CCU Experiences: • Resident Assistant, Ghetto Residence Hall • Helped launch CCU’s student discipleship program

Matt is a high school youth pastor at Cherry Hills Community Church, a large congregation in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. He teaches and disciples students, leads events, builds partnerships with local schools and organizations, and mentors youth program assistants and interns. Matt also recruits and trains adult volunteers, counsels parents in how to care for their students, and helps run an annual program that prepares seniors for life after graduation.

How did CCU prepare you for a career in youth ministry?CCU gave me plenty of opportunities to learn, serve, and grow. My training provided me with a foundation in how to care for an increasingly troubled and wounded youth culture that is desperate for truth and the authentic Gospel message.

How did you begin working in ministry?I did an internship with a church during my last semester of college. Once the internship was finished, the church hired me as a staff member and gave me my first shot at full-time youth ministry.

What advice would you give to a student considering this career?Take theology seriously and be sure of your calling to ministry. Students and families need caring, knowledgeable leaders to point them toward Christ, so follow Paul’s advice to Timothy and examine your life and doctrine well. Work hard, think hard, and explore the wonder and power of God through His Word. Trust that the Lord has a plan for you, and that He will form and shape you to be useful in His hands.

Eruditio ipsa ministerium ad acclesiam et pro ecclesia.

“Scholarship itself is ministry to the church and is for service to the church.”

Biblical and Theological StudiesStudy a variety of Christian viewpoints without being forced toward a particular one. Understand the Bible and historic and modern scholarship. Learn about other religions

and how they influence cultures and societies. Own your faith. As a biblical studies or theology major, you’ll be mentored inhow to approach the Bible with reverence, confidence, and credibility. But you’ll also learn how to adopt biblical principlesand theology in practical ways that are relevant for today.

Youth MinistryToday’s youth are often raised in homes and schools where morality is skewed and truth is relative. They need role models who can relate to them and help them form healthy value systems. Our Youth Ministry program was founded over 20 years ago and has become the standard for many schools also looking to train youth workers. Your courses will be updated to stay current with the youth landscape, but your foundation will always consist of biblical principles, discipleship, communication, and counseling relationships.
